Problem w/HP4 laserjet printer

Okay, so I know the printer is elderly -- circa 1992-1993.

I'm a teacher/writer who wants to avoid using my all-in-one color laser -- and its expensive toner units -- to print draft copies. So I need to know if the HP4 is dead, or if there's something that I can do/try before I look for a replacement B/W laserjet.

The HP4 turns on, says it's ready, but won't do anything else.

a. Printer's Menu button won't reveal a menu.

b. Can't do a test page via the Control Panel.

c. Docs sent from the computer fail.

Things I have tried but didn't work:

1. Disconnected then reconnected the power cord (it turns on, right?).

2a. Disconnected then reconnected HP4 USB connection.

2b. Connected HP4 to different USB.

3. Deleted the HP4 driver, unplugged its USB, restarted computer, then reconnected HP4 USB. Message said "detected new device" and installed a driver.

The pop-up stated:

-- -- --

Your devices are ready to use.

The software for this device has been successfully installed.

USB Printing Support--------Ready to use

No printer attached-----------Ready to use

-- -- --

4. Shut down printer; removed USB plug, shut down computer; reconnected printer USB; then turned computer on. Message said "detected new device" and installed a driver. Then same pop-up as above. Still can't print

Oh yes. Computer is HP 8100, with Vista Home.

Any ideas?
