install Word XP on new computer w/Vista. Or not?

I've been using MS Office for a number of years, so have been upgrading as needed. I'm currently using Word XP, Excel, and Power Point, all installed via an upgrade Office XP disk.

In order to install on a new computer w/Vista, I'm told that I have to buy the full package for the current MS Office, just as if I'm a first-time user.

And I'm told the same thing goes for PhotoShop CS which I installed via an upgrade disk when I moved from Version 6. That is, I have to buy the full package for CS3.

Is all this true?

If not, how do I install what I need?

If so, then sheesh! (And a few other things.)

MS Office '97-'03 should install just fine on Vista.
My Office 2000 version did.
So, maybe if you have an old version of office, you could install that, then use the XP upgrade Office disk.

If PhotoShop 6 will install and is compatible with Vista, then you could install it and use the PhotoShop CS upgrade disk.

I guess you'll just have to try and see what happens.
Vista will let you know if anything is not compatible during the install.

I think this information is correct: You may have a problem with validation. You are only allowed to install office xp on one computer (unless it's a student/teacher edition which can be installed on 3). I think it will work for 30 days unless you contact microsoft and they give you the information to validate it on a new computer.

Thanks! Still love working w Vista. Re watching TV at work, I work from home evenings and weekends - on other projects unrelated to my corporate exec day job. So the Vista machine is what I chose to keep from co-mingling my personal projects from actual work product. With the hours I spend away from the office (in spite of a 4-hour commute in total each day) I want to know of all the features available w Vista, including the TV/DVR one--have not had time to learn that one yet. actually it usually varies from printer to printer and from manufacturer. It is pretty normal that they give you a direction sheet to follow so if that is for sure what that one says then that should be how they want you to do it. But I have no way of knowing for sure. Do you happen to have the instruction guide? Sometimes on the actual cd when you first put it in there are some guides that you can read that tell you step by step how to proceed, you might try the cd and see if you see any how to directions. Just to make sure nothing gets messed up on your pc it would be a good idea for you to make are real simple restore point so if something should go awry you can just go right back to that place in time before you added the printer. To do that in xp click on start> all programs> accessories> system tools> system restore> create a restore point, name it something like prior to printer install then follow the instructions for a quick restore point to be created, that is all there is to it. Now if something messes up with the install of the printer you just follow those directions again and choose to restore your pc to a previous time and from that list pick the one you created with the name you choose and follow the directions for your pc to go right back to how it was before you started any of this. it will tell you to reboot the pc in that process. After much debate, I decided on XP because of software compatibility issues and information sharing between the new computer and the older XP. Both computers are used for work and must work together. I purchased the new computer to upgrade, down-the-line, to Vista. One problem I didn't consider was MS Office. The new machine was only sold with Office 07. The older machine has Office 03. All Word docs have to be saved at 03 docs on the new machine in order to be opened on the older machine. I guess it depends on what you use it for. I didn't have time to fool with getting Vista to work with what I need for work.

The link below provides step by step procedure using your Vista program. No money needed LOL This link tells you How to dual boot XP onto a Vista computer. Boy, I am glad you asked that as it was something I needed to do and know about. I would like Vista but am reluctant to do away with XP on my main computer for now and I certainly do not wish to try Vista on the other machines I have. Based on previous experience you might find booting up is a drag because you are required to select which operating system in a few seconds and it can get annoying. Thanks for that news, because I was wondering about the validation of a new installation.

I just located the software I used. It's the Academic Edition of Office XP, purchased while I was attending the local community college.

So, it sounds like I should be fine.

Update:
Both Office XP and my ancient HP4 laser printer installed and are functioning well on Vista Home Premium. (Had to buy a conversion cable --parallel to USB -- for the printer.)

Now I'm struggling with trying to set up my LAN via my D-link router. It worked fine before husband's computer died. (Sigh; always something.)
