Gmail, yellow banner

When I get on gmail I get this banner. I have IE 8.

"""You are using a version of Internet Explorer which will soon be unsupported. Some features may not work correctly.

Upgrade to a modern browser, such as Google Chrome. Dismiss."""

Is this for real, do I need to upgrade to IE9?

"I heard somewhere that Google has a policy of supporting the two most recent versions of popular browsers. So far, this has meant IE8 and IE9.

This Friday, IE10 will be released with Windows 8. After that, Google will support IE9 and IE10.

Of course, this doesn't mean that Google will suddenly stop working on IE8. Most services such as Gmail will probably continue to work for at least a couple of years. Some of the newer, fancier features might begin to look a little broken after a while, but as your own experience with IE7 shows, "not officially supported" doesn't mean "not supported at all".

Hi Terrene, hi all. Ain't it awful? Shortly after I got the countdown banner up & running, co. developed financial difficulties & when you click on the banner it displays the following message: "Sorry, due to the expense of the server needed to host the countdown banners, I have eliminated them and downgraded to a lower costing server plan." I clicked on some of the other banners but the same message comes up on the same url: http://ult-tex.net/counts/index.cgi Disappointing b/c the Spring countdown banner is used in this forum and we know it works on gardenweb. Other companies have these banners, free & easy to use, so I will work on a new one. Just hope it displays nicely in a gardenweb post. I'm on it! Thanks to everyone for the lovely photos! Since I live up here in the frozen north, I can't grow most of the macrophyllas, so I've been drooling. Dtd & George - The Ville de Lyon growing through my Endless Summer is a product of my slowness in getting the trellis finished and up. I actually have quite acid soil, but it's too sandy where they are for good plant growth since there's no water available, so I used well-rotted horse manure, plopped by the tractor bucket 8 " deep right on top of the sand. I mulched it with wood shavings (the bed is next to the family woodshop) to keep the weeds down. I guess the horse manure must still be somewhat basic, and since I didn't mix in the native fine sand at all, the blooms are pink. I'm interested to see if over time the color changes on the Endless Summer as the worms and burrowing rodents do their thing and the soil gets more mixed. I do have rhodies in the same area, some in the same unamended manure and some in beds where I mixed the manure into the soil before I got too lazy. The rhodies are all thriving, so it might be a lack of aluminum (?) that keeps it from turning blue. I guess I'll have to try starting a few cuttings and play around with where it's blue and where it's pink. The Penny Mac in the same bed is a mix of cream, pale pink and pale blue, but I don't know if it is pH dependent. (Of course, I could always do a pH test . . . )

That really chaps me when they do that, I use an older version of firefox on one of my linux systems and everytime I go to gmail on it that happens to me too. I know it will work fine because the day before they started doing that it worked perfectly with all the bells and whistles then bam there is the message and only the bare essentials work.
Not that big a deal because I rarely use gmail but still it is just them wanting to try to get you to go to Chrome.
Most sites support much older browsers.

And of course if you still use XP you can not go up from IE8 because IE9 and up are not made for xp. This is one more way they start to force people to move away from xp.

Not quite sure that might be correct because as I understand things Windows XP cannot run IE9 so perhaps Google will extend that as there are far too many XP users to be ignored methinks. Time will tell of course.

Not too sure Google will go out of it's way to enhanced the profit margins for their friends over at Microsoft. Again, I could be wrong of course.

I thank you for the input. I am not very pc literate. I use gmail as my only email. Before I had many pc problems and made the decision to no longer use the email through my cable company.

I bet however that their Google Chrome browser will still work with xp LOL so there we go, if you have XP and can not go to IE 9 or above they will be happy for you to use their newest latest version of Chrome. Which for some may be a very good thing who knows!

I agree Owbist they are definitely not out to help Microsoft profit LOL.
