Don't sweat it. Seriously.

Your kids right now will look at everything as an adventure, especially if you present it to them as one. Their own "big boy toilet" or "big girl tub".

If you represent the bathroom to them as a disappointment, or that they are not capable enough to overcome the size challenge, guess what? They'll mirror that attitude and they will likely prove you right that the bathroom is a disappointment.

When my kids were young, I gave them a large-platform step of sorts to help them, reach the sink. By writing "large" I don't mean ginormous, but it simply had a larger footprint than a standard step-up stool for added stability.

My only restriction for them was they couldn't stand on the platform while brushing their teeth, they had to step off and stand on the floor.

I gave them a little free-standing potty seat that sat next to the toilet. They could sit on the kid seat, go potty, then pour it into the big toilet and flush. Or sit on the big toilet and have at it adult-style.

This was when they were 2 to 3 years old. By the time they were 3 they were using the adult toilet but still used the standing platform to reach the sink faucet.

They always used the adult tub.

Again, they will overcome the challenge. And they'll have fun doing so.

Plus it'll save you another remodel in a couple of years when you go from kid-sized to standard-sized fixtures.

My opinion.

I don't think that many people realize however, that standard vanity depth used to be 21" (22 with countertop) or as shallow as 18/19. Its easy to tell by looking that they have gotten higher, but the depth is trickier. I've had people buy them and then not be able to use them because of the doorswing. (Or getting them IN to an older bathroom through a 24" doorway, which is narrower because of the stops.)

Thank you, palimpsest, for explaining why I had such a difficult time getting my new vanity through the doorway of my bathroom (built in the 1970s). I was thoroughly confused at the time about why I struggled to find anything that could even squeeze through.

No suggestions except to keep in mind that the kids will grow. My neighbor also got a deep tub for her kids. Her daughter said she felt like she was sitting in a cereal bowl. Funny.

Thank you for the support everyone. I feel better already:) I did make one change. I swapped out a Pottery Barn medicine cabinet for the large Cartwright from RH. It is interesting that the larger medicine cabinet makes the vanity look smaller. I think RH has excellent stuff. although I do not like their new furniture lines.

It sounds like a beautiful bathroom and like you made some great choices. I predict in a couple of years you will be very glad about the direction you went. Our kids are only little for such a short time and this bathroom sounds like it will grow with them nicely. I prefer a deeper vanity and tub so I applaud your choices. We just put in a super deep tub in the kids/guest bath. I can't wait to use it myself! Post some pictures when you get a chance! I think we'd all love to see it!

Gryane, Thank you for the comments and I getting use to it already! I will try to post pictures. The primary toy that I use to take photos says memory card full. I tried deleting all of the pictures and that did not work. I am usually pretty good with tech stuff but not this time. I will try to work it out and post.

I wouldn't design a bathroom sized specifically for children. They really DO get big quickly! The single item I always had for my kids was a handheld shower head. Much easier to rinse the girls' hair as well as useful when cleaning the shower walls.
But I did see the cutest tiny toilet in a showroom that was almost irresistible. And my kids are all adults.

I think looks great -- and very classic :-) I love your choice for a vanity...and w/a soaking tub maybe they are a little less likely to get water on the floor!

Do you have any concern for the wooden medicine cabinet from RH swelling due to steam and moisture? Also, which cabinet from Pottery Barn did you decide to return? Does the finish on the RH medicine cabinet have a good warranty?

I'm agonizing over medicine cabinets! I just check the prices of the Robern, wow! Very expensive and I'm not quite sure of what I'm getting, the Robern pictures online are so minimal as are the descriptions!

Cupofkindness, I do not have any concerns about the medicine cabinet from RH swelling due to moisture as it seems to be very well made and I have an exhaust fan in the room. I returned the hotel style MC because I did not think it was made very well and I very happy with that decision. There are many posts in this forum about my Cartwright MC from RH, almost all positive. Have no idea about the warranty. Hope this helps Thanks for the compliment and good luck!

Would you mind telling me what the inside of the Cartwright cabinet looks like? Is it mirrored inside? How far does the door swing (I mean, the angle)? If possible, would you take a picture or two of the cabinet with the door wide open and of the inside?

Also, are you happy with the large-size Cartwright? I have the larger Memoirs pedestal sink which measures 30", and wonder if the large might over power it. The overall width of the large is 28" at the top. However, my oldest son is 6'6" so I need a rather long mirror to accomodate him and my nine year old son as well. It's hard to believe that 10 years ago my tall son was the same height as my nine year old. Talk abut kids growing fast.

Cupofkindness, The inside has three shelves including the bottom. It is not mirrored inside. I added it to my photos so you can see it with the door open. It is not open completely because the sconce is in the way. I am very happy with the large sized cartwright. I read that the mirror on the small one is not very big at all. I see your point about the large size at 28 inches and 30 for your sink. My vanity is 36 wide but I don't think there is a rule here. I would look for photos of pedestal sinks and medicine cabinets to see if you can find any where the MC is wider than the sink. I am sure glad that it is completed. Now, it is onto all of the things around the house:)

A decision at last! Here is a link showing the medicine cabinet we purchased for the boys bathroom. It's 24 wide by 30 inches long. It's beautiful. We are in the process of installing it ourselves, which is a tremendously complex proposition. The amazing storage this cabinet will provide will be worth it. The little picture doesn't do the frame justice, it is a delicate champagne finish. In the end we decided not to attempt a "period" look in the bathroom, but rather a look more in line with the rest of the house. It's all good!
