Connecting to Dial-Up internet vial ethernet?

Hello all, first time posting here. I'm having a bit of trouble connecting to the internet. I currently was using high speed cable internet where I would have to connect through an ethernet port. Now I am needing to use dial-up but there is not a port on my computer that is suitable for this (i understand that ethernet and dial up ports are completely different). I was wondering what I would have to do to get my computer to be able to use my dial-up internet. Is there a product out that has an ethernet connecter on one end and a dial-up on the other? All advice will be greatly appriciated. Thank you.

You need to purchase a modem to allow you to connect a telephone line into the back of your computer. They come with either a floppy disk or CD with needed drivers that you install. Plus you will need a cable with an adaptor each end of sufficient length to reach the computer from the wall jack. Your phone then plugs into the computer to ensure you still have use of it.

I don't fully understand the question, still I offer the following. If you want to install and interconnect two computers via the Ethernet Port you'll need only a CAT5 cable with RJ45 male terminations. This will allow the two computers to directly share files and other resources. I've never done this, but I think it works. If you want to connect three or more Computer via an Ethernet network you need an Ethernet Hub. These are very inexpensive. If you also want to connect to the Internet, then you'll need a Router instead of the Hub. That said, you have to have an interface to the ISP, which will NOT be Ethernet unless you are inside their facility and can patch a CAT5 cable into their router...I say this in "jest", but I read you question to say you don't understand the basics of connecting to an ISP, which has Ethernet involved only if you want to operate an Ethernet network inside your home/business. Now backing off in ignorance, I admit if you have Fiber Optical cable to your home/business, that my have an Ethernet interface... don't know.

Never mind, I was just trying to move too fast, there is a choice of how all connections are set up, the first/default is wireless, and I didn't correct to what I wanted. Not so different in this respect from XP, I just didn't look.

Hold up before promising friends to much. I know that 2 of the major satellite providers have "fair access" policies which restrict how much can be downloaded, either in a single 24 hour period or over a 30-day rolling period. Going over this limit will get you "fapped" ie: you will be downgraded to sub-dialup speeds as punishment for actually using the service you pay dearly for. Fortunately this speed decrease usually only lasts for a day. If what she needs isn't huge, then I agree that a jump drive is really the way to go... unless they want windows updates... and running those during the day will surely get you a slap on the wrist from your provider! One of those 2 providers has a "fap free" period where you are allowed to download as much as you want... from 3 to 6am here on the east coast. The answer is yes, I have gotten up at 2:30 in the morning to download files I wanted that would normally have gotten my already horrible speeds reduced further.

My guess is Netflix, hulu and such would not stream good over dial up but someone correct me if that thinking is wrong. I know I couldn't drop my cable like a few of my friends did. I like to watch shows when they are current and even when I use a few netowrks apps on my tablet to watch a show I miss some want me to log in with a provider so if you don't have one you are out of luck if you miss a show. I have time warner internet and TV, don't have a house phone so no need for their phone service. We have one box on the living room TV and that's it. We do have a TV in the bedroom but only get expanded basic on it, no box. I can access time warner live TV and on demand stuff on my laptop at timewarner.com when in bed or I can use the time warner app on my android tablet to watch live TV and on demand stuff up there so you might see if charter has that option of an app but of course you need wireless to do that. This saves me from paying for another box. I do subscribe to hulu and Netflix but don't have a roku for them and just use the apps on my tablet or watch from the computer, works for me as I am a big TV watcher myself and that's what I choose to spend money on. Now to convince the other half I need a 10" tablet for Christmas to watch movies on, he he. Mary

Are you sure your computer doesn't already have a modem? Check that out first. I haven't purchased a desktop or a notebook in the last then years that didn't come with a dial-up modem, now the connection of last resort, and what I am using. Got to Control Panel -> Connect to -> Show all connections and see if you don't already have a modem. I guess one could also look at device manager.... I think it unlikely you have an uninstalled modem and don't get a new device found when you boot, assuming BIOS is set t PnP.

Also, look on your computer for a RJ11, the jack you see on your telephone, it will be the female version on the computer, that too indicates there's a modem in there somewhere.

My related question, I haven't worked on yet, is using a modem on computer "A" to serve other computers on a common Ethernet LAN. This need comes up as I have a troubled modem in one of my home computers that is on the home network. I may go to DSL, I see my local telephone company, Embarq (Sprint, liked this name better) does now have a tree-tier offer for my remote location, must have a repeater station between me and the central office.
