Skype/internet help please

Hello!

I have not been in these forums in ages and am so glad to see that they are still around! My boyfriend and I are having a weird skype issue and I wondered if any computer or skype gurus were out there who might be able to help us.

My boyfriend and I both have our skype set up so that when we log onto our computers, skype starts up automatically. We do this because we skype each other now and then during the week when we are not together.

The other day, my bf went home from work and showered, played a game or two of xbox, and came to my house for the night. Later in the evening I went online and I saw that he was logged into skype, but he was at my house. So I said that he must have gone online before he came to see me and his computer stayed logged in and had not gone idle, but he told me he never went online at all after work.

The next morning we woke up and I logged onto my computer and it did not show him on skype. So I assumed his computer went idle or was in screen saver mode or something. But then about half an hour later, it showed he was logged into skype. Wtf! He had just left my house and was on his way to work.

Does anyone understand why he shows up in skype when he's not even at his computer or has been on it?? We are both baffled by this. I mean I'm sitting at my computer and suddenly a little box pops up telling me that he just came on skype, but he is driving to work at the time. Thanks so much for your help!

Btw...if that turns out to be the case, I'd say he's busted. Time to move on. (sorry.)

Many readers here have limited experience and limited knowledge. I believe responses from the more knowledgeable people should avoid strong, unfounded biases. There's no place for doing that with a beginner level audience, they (like you) may not have the time, interest, or ability to reach their own conclusions. I don't make it a point to find issues to quibble about, but it does seem you don't like it when people don't share your opinions. I try to present balanced views, keeping in mind that some people may know nothing more than what they've read in this forum. MS Internet Explorer is reported to be the most widely used browser in governmental and business use. They take that responsibility seriously, because an awful lot of essential stuff relies on it. To suggest that some grandma somewhere should worry about using the latest update to play tic-tac-toe is simply silly. And no, I don't have to have the last word.

I've cooked ham exactly once but can say everyone, including me, raved. This recipe is not from the internet, but rather from the world wide web: City Ham Recipe courtesy Alton Brown 1 city style (brined) ham, hock end 1/4 cup brown mustard 2 cups dark brown sugar 1-ounce bourbon (poured into a spritz bottle) 2 cups crushed ginger snap cookies Heat oven to 250 degrees F. Remove ham from bag, rinse and drain thoroughly. Place ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan. Using a small paring knife or clean utility knife set to the smallest blade setting, score the ham from bottom to top, spiraling clockwise as you cut. (If you're using a paring knife, be careful to only cut through the skin and first few layers of fat). Rotate the ham after each cut so that the scores are no more than 2-inches across. Once you've made it all the way around, move the knife to the other hand and repeat, spiraling counter clockwise. The aim is to create a diamond pattern all over the ham. (Don't worry too much about precision here.) Tent the ham with heavy duty foil, insert a thermometer, and cook for 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature at the deepest part of the meat registers 130 degrees F. Remove and use tongs to pull away the diamonds of skin and any sheets of fat that come off with them. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Dab dry with paper towels, then brush on a liberal coat of mustard, using either a basting brush or a clean paint brush (clean as in never-touched paint). Sprinkle on brown sugar, packing loosely as you go until the ham is coated. Spritz this layer lightly with bourbon, then loosely pack on as much of the crushed cookies as you can. Insert the thermometer (don't use the old hole) and return to the oven (uncovered). Cook until interior temperature reaches 140 degrees F, approximately 1 hour. Skype is a VOIP (voice over internet protocol)computer application that allows the user to make telephone, text messaging and webcam "calls" digitally, rather than using the traditional analog (our current telephone to telephone) calls. With Skype you can call computer to computer (the other user must have Skype) for free, a landline or a cell phone(domestic or internationally) for a fee - these rates are usually lower than your landline or cell(international) long distance rates. I use a USB headset and the sound quality is excellent. I have used a headset with the regular plug in and got a lot of feedback and echoing. I have used MSN messenger and have been less than pleased with the quality but it may have improved over time. When I have had to refill my skype account (I call internationally -landlines and cell phones), you can refill quite easily as you are talking - and you can use your paypal! "Yeah, Snidely, my sister also just told me this is what I'm going to have to do--how ridiculous. " Why do you think it's ridiculous? That's a frequent and easy solution to forgotten or otherwise inaccessible logins. I'm not sure why you think it matters. I'd think your end objective is to USE Skype, not to solve the problem in one specific way. Following my suggestion will give you access to Skype in less than 5 minutes. As an alternative, you can also use Google Talk. It has many of the same features as Skype - free user to user audio and video sessions plus free and unlimited US calling. Google Talk allows that free and unlimited calling to US numbers even when you're outside the US, you just need an internet connection to originate the call. Using it requires having a gmail email account. Also something you need to sign up for. There are even more alternatives you may want to consider. Good luck.

Maybe it his other gf staying at his place using his computer - it auto starts at boot right? :) She starts his computer .. it shows he's online, she turns it off.. he goes offline.

No, he doesn't have a "modern" phone with apps to do that. Also, I'm 100% sure he doesn't have another girlfriend! We have been together for a year and are together constantly. Believe me, I was married for ten years to a man who stepped outside of the marriage. This is not that guy. I'm just wondering if there is something weird with how skype works, not whether or not I should leave my relationship.

It is possible the computer started itself looking for updates. If he is set to auto update this will happen.

On the issue of Skype itself the program seems to have gone to h*ll in a handcart since Microsoft bought the company. A text was Skyped to me on a Tuesday but it never arrived till Friday yet both of us had been online during the time span. Transmission delays are a bit more frequent these days but usually arrive a few hours later. Texting with Skype used to almost guarantee the message would be there when the recipient came online, this seems to be no longer the case.

Hopefully MS will put some effort into getting it back to the great program it used to be.

I understand the service is free and I appreciate that, grateful for the gift. I use it extensively but service seems to have deteriorated.

I appreciate all of the input. Owbist, if his computer is not logged on, it still does things like that? I am not familiar with that, though I am not overly computer savvy.

I should amend that statement a little. If your computer is shut down I do not believe it can self start. My computer is rarely shut down but goes to sleep leaving nothing running. In this sleep mode with Windows 7 (and possibly Vista?) Microsoft has the ability to start and update the computer.

My apologies for that confusion, I wrote that assuming all computers are equal and they are not as we all individualise our machines to personal preferences.
