Having to Retype the WEP Key

My daughter wanted to load pictures onto a second computer we have that only has one working USB input. She unplugged the Wireless USB adaptor without disconnecting from the network, and now every time we turn on the computer, we have to right click on the LAN Card Status, Launch Config Utilities, click on the correct service and enter the WEP Key. I do not know how to save the Key number. I almost have the 26 number key memorized. Suggestions?

Selecting the desired connection should offer two options,
"connect" and "connect automatically" - selecting "connect automatically"

See if that helps for starters.

might help to power down everything and start over from scratch so it is all done at one time. Power off all the computers, then unplug power from the router and modem. Wait about 5 mins then power up first the modem, wait, then the router, wait till all lit, then the computers. Enter the info if asked and make sure it is as zep mentioned. Some I have seen do ask if if you want to remember that network say yes if you see that.

Snidely, that's the most original idea I've come across; but I'm afraid that it would make my rather idiosyncratic typing even worse. I've never been able to use the right Shift properly. Well, thanks to all of you who responded. It does seem as if my best bet is just to buy a keyboard that has lights to alert me to when CapsLock is on. Just wanted to be able to use this cheap one because it came with the new computer I got so that my husband and I could continue to use Win 7 for a long time! But sometimes life is easier if we are willing to spend a little more!

fwiw WPA is the security most would use. One passphrase of 20 charatures is recommended by most to make it virtually unhackable. That security is to keep others out of your router or off your internet connection. Many people screw up writing down passphrases on paper and/or retyping it in. Can't connect complaints usually blaming it on other things are frequently solved by whoops, my passphrase was entered wrong. Copy & Paste passphase is virtually foolproof. But requires a bit of though. Dont push the OK button until you've pasted it onto notepad or something. WEP is ok, but there are programs Johnny Jr next door might use to gain access in a few minutes. One of those four WEP keys is designated the primary key with a bullet or check box... that checked key you would copy/paste into your computer for the passphrase or key. You're not going to be automatically given a key in your home. Maybe at work when login & security is handled off a server. When you do credit cards and other secrets online usually its on a secure web page and those web pages are encryped so mr bad guy & neighbor are not able to see anything except googlygoop.

I have a Mac, but assume this would work on a MS system as well. I keep two documents called MISC open at the bottom of my computer. One is a word processing document and the other is a draw program document. (I use the free Libre Office suite.) Whenever I have a long email I first compose it in Word and then copy and paste. It's also handy when I post the same reply in many places on Facebook. The drawing program is handy when I want to copy and paste an image from the web. Amd either is also handy for copying and pasting text from the web, as well. I also can relate to spending considerable time composing an email only to lose it. Not fun!

Hi Mikie, I sure hope you or someone else knowledgable is around. I'm at my daughter's house. I entered the address (numbers from above) in the address bar on the PC and went through the set up and then re-booted the PC and re-brought up the browser. On the laptop, when I click on the wirless connections icon on the tool bar it shoulw the network is available. It also shows some others. It says the network requires a network key (WEP) and I entered the same one as I'd entered on the PC, and click connect and the box disappears. But when I bring up internet explorer, it says no connection. No matter what I do, and I've tried a bunch of things, I still get no connection on the browser on the PC. Please Help!! Thanks, Alice

Thanks for the suggestions.
While I was waiting for this computer to fire up, and was playing with the one in trouble, I right clicked on the LAN Card Status again and was given another option. It's gone now again, but was something like start Microsoft Configuration Utility, so I did, entered the key twice, okayed it, and voila! connection and connection automatic when I rebooted. I'm sure if you hadn't suggested things, I would never have found the solution, and now I have other things I can try next time.
