How can I change the place files get downloaded to?

I am using WinXP media edition and Firefox. Until recently, my downloads automatically went to the desktop, but they suddenly began getting downloaded to a folder in My Documents called "Downloads," instead, and I can't figure out how to reverse this. In fact, I don't remember changing the location for downloads, either, because I liked it the way it was.

Can anyone please tell me how to make downloads go to my desktop automatically again?

Tools (from top toolbar)--Options--Main tab...(same as above)

Hi damccoy, Thanks so very much for responding! I was trying to download from: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_10.1_for_Windows_Internet_Explorer&p=Google_Toolbar_6.5&d=McAfee_Security_Scan_Plus&os=XP&browser=ie&type=activex I made sure it was a download for Windows XP. Made sure I had enough room to download it. I am using IE8. I only use my AOL for email because I've had it set up since 1997 and I am too lazy to go around changing my email addy with all that have it for social and business. So I wanted the flash player to load for IE8 as that's the browser I use for all my searches/internet activity. I did just recently add service pack 3 to my computer and the first time I tried to download it I had problems. That's the first time my friend told me about this site here at GW. I ended up being able to get the service pack 3 on my second try. I tried a second time with Adobe Flash 10 and then again a third time but even though I get the message box that says it's been downloaded, I see that it's nowhere in the Add/Remove section. When I look at the preference of the file I got downloaded, it says it has audio...no video. That file has no video then, just audio as far as I know. I found where you can play a video from an online store and it says that is usually where they are stored. Do I go to my account and download the video from there to my Media Player? Yes try it nothing to loose, just download it to the desktop for now, when it finishes just double click and see if windows media player attempts to play it. Let us know. At some point it's also possible you may need to install / download-----> K-Lite Codec Pack... If you have any issues playing DVD'S. That's why I wanted you to try a known good DVD, just to see if it plays, if it does then you would more then likely not need to install the K-Lite Codec Pack With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even several less common formats. Getting rid of file cabinet, where or how do I store small files?

DD50: That sounds ideal, but we don't have a Home Goods store in the small ocean side town that I live in. Unfortunately we have already lost 4 businesses in this small town, and a furniture store bearing a sign, asking for a bail-out, believe it or not! We DO have an antique store that is closing and right now it is 40% off. The woman wants out, and I did find two pieces of furniture that would work for my situation, but her prices are still too high. I will check again with her in a week to see if I can get her to drop lower. I have tried Freecycle and Craigslist and am active with both, and the file cabinet is a bit rusty that I don't think anyone would want it. Lena: You are most certainly correct. My words exactly!! We are headed for Depression. Closet space is ample, 'busy' but not crowded, but not an option for the file cabinet as I already have a small chest in there holding extra linens, one box of photo albums, etc.

Can a .doc file be Changed to a PDF. file?

There is also a free download called CutePDF writer. Once you download/install it shows up just like a printer so you go to print your document, select this option, and it creates a PDF file and saves it to your hard drive. We use this at work and I also use it at home.

No problem, Canibus. I thought it must be something like that, or else that the latest version of FF had made a change and it used to be the way you described it. That's how out-of-touch I was!

Maybe I'm wrong but .. Anytime you click onto a download, you should get a popup asking if you would like to run or save the download?

I know that anytime I am going to download something, I get that and at the bottom of the popup there will be a 'browse' button to navigate to the folder that you want your download to go to.

After that, your downloads will always go to that folder .. unless you change it.

JustMe: Yes, but that's if you haven't told it already to always put downloads in some specific place, which I had done, so the popup box didn't give me a browse option. The problem is solved now, anyway, with the use of the Options box. I don't know why I didn't see that.
