Waterproofing old window well in shower (Beginner - HELP!)

Hello everyone,

We have a window in our shower that had small glass tiles around the perimeter that were beginning to bubble and had to be torn out. Whoever put the glass tile up did so over old plaster walls. When tearing out the tile the plaster came with it. We are going to put new glass tile up but need help with some questions.

1- how can we make a surface to tile on? The old plaster is gone and now we have an uneven surface.

2- Would ditra be suitable in such a small place or should we attempt cement baker board?

3- what is the best way to waterproof to make sure this doesnt happen again.

Here are some pics. (you can see the old glass tile)
