Need recommendations on range hood...?Zephyr?

I need to replace my current unvented, non-functional range hood. There are very few dealers where I live, so I will probably have to buy something sight-unseen, relying only on internet information.

I need a 30" undercabinet hood, 400-800 CFM, vented out the back, internal blower, good lighting because I have a visual impairment, and easy to clean because I am otherwise disabled. I would like almond/bisque, but could go with black, and obviously it would be nice if it were relatively quiet.

My local kitchen design center recommends the Broan Allure III, which has received terrible reviews here, on ConsumerReports, and every other site I can find. My current unvented fan is an Allure I, and it doesn't appear to be very well constructed either.

My local Sears sells Electrolux but I can't find much info about them.

I have been looking at the Zephyr Typhoon and Zephyr Breeze II on the internet. Does anyone here own either, and can you tell me if the Zephyrs with the round grills are easy to clean? http://www.zephyronline.com/docs/brand_essentials/products/specsheets/typhoon_spec.pdf

I just bought the Zephyr Typhoon 30" in stainless steel this afternoon. I saw it in person the other day at a store and was very impressed. I haven't read one bad review about it...everyone raves about it. It's the most powerful range hood for a 30" at 850 CFM. It also looks great and comes in the colors you're looking for.

I bought mine online at VentingDirect.com and paid $536.30. (They priced matched the stainless steel version on another site www.universal-akb.com).

I have heard good things about the Zephyr, and have looked at the Kobe pieces as well. For my taste, I found the Kobe pieces more to my liking, but not a day-and-night difference.

For ease of cleaning, I like baffle filters over mesh or "oil cup" designs. You can toss them in the dishwasher once a week or so and they'll stay clean and last much longer than mesh.

VentingDirect.com carries the Kobe as well. The photos aren't great there or on the Kobe site, but having looked at many of them, post here and I or someone else could probably help describe the visual differences.

Hi Melanie - Update: I received a push button assembly and a capacitor parts from Zephyr. We consulted our electrician (who happened to be on site doing unrelated work), he told us that our existing push button assembly is working fine so that part was not needed. He did install the new capacitor and said that by the sound the unit was making he could tell that electricity is feeding the unit adequately so that's not the issue either. He carefully lifted one of the two grids on the side of the blower and noticed that the blower wheel (sorry for not knowing the proper technical terms) was stuck in place, kind of gummed up, which is probably due to some grease accumulation over the years. He manually prodded the wheel to make it spin freely. He did this to both sides of the blower and the unit started working again. However, we still have the unpleasant screeching noises but have regained use of the hood. We decided to use it sparingly as long as it extracts odors, steam etc until we can replace it (or find someone who restores these types of motors.....not sure how cost effective that route would be though....). I recently purchased a Kobe wall mount hood that uses a 6" duct. I will be installing it this week sometime, but we don't move into the new house for another week yet...so i won't really be able to give it a thorough test for a while. When the hood arrived, I opened it up and temporarily hooked it up to see how well it works. I had some duct work connected to it to see how loud it was going to be once installed. What size and type of range will you have? We had the Whirlwind in our last house. It was very quiet and had a very low profile, which was great for having storage above it. It was also easy to clean. We had a ceramic top electric range and didn't do much broiling or stir fry then. That wouldn't be a model that would keep up with us now. Before I decided to have a 48" gas rangetop, and thought we'd have 36" induction and would do stir-frying, I was planning to get the Typhoon that offered better lighting and more CFMs for no more noise. With the gas rangetop, I was leaning toward the Tempest II. I ended up with a comparable Electrolux hood instead, but believe the Zephyr would've been a good choice, too.

I don't have any experience with the Bluestar insert, but we did have a Zephyr. Below is the text of my post from another thread describing our experience. In a nutshell, we got rid of it and put in a remote blower. If there's ANY way for you to get the fan out of the kitchen, do it. I can't comment on those specific models, but we had a Zephyr Monsoon II model AK9346AS installed about a year ago and it we found it to be impossibly loud. Their literature says the sone level on low is 3.5, which, based on this chart, is about 45 decibels. I downloaded a decibel meter to my phone and with the phone sitting on the stove 35 inches below, the noise registered 80-82 db. That's MUCH louder than advertised, and we found it very uncomfortable and annoying--couldn't hear the Sonos speaker 12 feet away or anyone talking in a normal voice, and there was a sigh of relief whenever we turned the fan off. We eventually decided to switch it out and install a Wolf liner (with variable speed knob), an inline silencer, and 1400 cfm Abbaka roof mounted blower. It's quieter on high than the Zephyr was on low. The three pieces are a more expensive proposition (even if we hadn't made the Zephyr mistake), but the result is so vastly more pleasant that I still smile when I turn on the fan. In a nutshell, if there's any way you can listen to the Zephyr and Best, preferably in a similar setting, do it. Don't trust the literature.

Since you've actually seen the Typhoon, I hope you don't mind a few more questions...
Are the grills centered so they'll be effective for both front and back burners?
Are the oil cups the rectangular things in the back?
What do you think of the cleaning procedure...spraying detergent into it while it's running?
Did you have a chance to hear it? Is it quiet?
