It sounds as if your browser has either java or jave-script turned off or that active X is off (Active-X) can be a problem child as a lot of bad things can be directed through that. Take a look and make sure that show images is also enabled. Could be a lot of things but those should get you started and if you posted a page that is causing the problem we could take a look at it and see what the hang up could be.

I think that maybe it's a problem with that particular website or certain websites that get their images blocked for some reason.

To turn java and java-script on or off in Firefox, you go to tools, options, content tab.
As far as active x, Firefox doesn't use it. That is one reason it's more secure from adware/malware/trojans, etc. Most of the drive-by downloads for malware are caused by active-x.
