Bell ringing in tower after problem

I couldn't get to a website. A blank page would come up.

I'd hit "start" to reboot and the display just flashed and wouldn't stay up long enough for me to select anything. When I clicked on desktop icons, they'd just flash.

All this within 2 minutes or so.

A bell started ringing inside the computer. I googled for a tower bell ringing but could find nothing.

I turned off the puter by the front button.

I restarted it, but it wouldn't boot to the Dell logo.

It finally rebooted and is running fine right this minute.

Anybody know what a bell ringing inside the tower means?

My ABCD diagnostic lights on the back of the tower are all green.

Dell desktop dimension 4700.

The fact that all diagnostic lights are green suggests there are no hardware problems.

What anti virus and anti spyware program do you have installed? Are they up to date with the latest definitions and have you ran them recently?

You might try a free online scan for spyware and/or Trojans. Run BitDefender, Housecall, Symantec or your own favourite to see if they find anything of interest.

The bell. Is it a constant sound of a hammer hitting the bell or more like a church bell peeling? If there was any kind of sound pattern check the beep codes in the online manual I have linked to below. How long does it go on for?

Let us know what you find.

I ran an virus check and it's OK. It's not a series of beeps.
The ringing sounded like a low, fast chirping bell ring, but definitely a bell sound. It sounded sort of like when you put an elevator on hold, but lower. Or fire alarm bell.
I just bought a can of air and will go look inside.

I grew up a few blocks from a carillon. John D. Rockafeller II had a thing about them -- he gave money for the two largest ones in the states: the one in Rockafeller Chapel at the University of Chicago and the one in the Riverside Church in New York. Both are named after his mother, Laura Spellman Rockafeller. In both, some of the large bells can swing, to make a peal. At the U. of C., they ring the Westminster tune on the quarter hour. There are frequent carillon concerts. Even before the carillon was installed, there was a set of bells in another tower on campus, that Amos Alonzo Stagg commandeered to ring curfew for this football players. Ohgoodgrief. I had an ericafon and it's hard to even consider that being vintage, with its space-age design. I remember when all the phones were owned by the phone company and one simply "leased" them with the line. My mother is still on the ringer system with her old rotary dial phones, instead of the touch tone and this presents a problem sometimes when automated systems don't give an option for holding for an operator. I was thinking the other day about my son who is always on the cutting edge of any new technology. He had one of the first models of car mobile phones available to the general public. It was an enormous unit and his car was promptly broken into and it was history. I suspect communications are the one area I associate with the most change in my lifetime. I remember my aunt's old private number, since I was a child when I had to use it and it wasn't listed. It's etched on my brain like a cattle brand. Her prefix was Gladstone and I still recite the GL and five numbers. Yes, I remember party lines and actually had one for awhile in the mid seventies until a private line became available. Back in Missouri when I was first married, that's all we ever had. ONe had to have a modicum of courtesy to share telephone lines, and more than one person would cry wolf, and say it was an emergency and ask you to clear the line just out of convenience. There was even a warning in the phone book against that.

Good Mornin! So this beautiful spring morning with outside temp still in the freezing 40s we go on with the PH quest of mine lol yesterday I adjusted the water down to 4.7PH (the ph down solution slipped form my hand) but in 2 hours I was up to 5.1 (this is JUST water) this morning I am up to 5.2 which is nice.. generally my PH would have been 7-8 by the morning check unfortunately the water does run warm and the ice melts quickly in there. so I fill ziplock bags with ice and dump them in there.. down to 20-22C from 26C I drained the water in to a bucket and added my Nutrients Starting water now is at 22C , PH of 5, 220PPM Hydrogarden Tomato mix 2 tsp + Cal Nit 2tsp + Mg sulf 1.3Tsp mixed it for 15 min poured it back into the system added some ice bottle and H2O2 after mix we are up to 920ppm. PH 5.2, temp 21c.. I can not keep up this temp control I will see if I can find a cheap chiller.. open to ideas on this. I will let the PH ride at the low 5 and see how it handles itself in a day.. P.S. the mix is Derived From: Potassium Nitrate, Potassium Phosphate, Muriate of Potash, Iron Chelate (DTPA), Boric Acid, Iron Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Chelate (EDTA), Zinc Chelate (EDTA), Zinc Sulfate & Molybdic Acid .

Part 2 to my earlier reply. After seeing the reply to you from sundevil, I read the customer reviews on Amazon for a similar Heath Zenith chime extender. I suspect the technology is much the same. I do recall needing to fiddle around a bit with the transmitter (the part that is put into your existing door chime) before everything worked as it should. Just some trial-and-error in finding the exact location to put the part so that everything worked. However, I could understand how others might have a more challenging situation and frustrating experience. I may just have been lucky. Anyway, I thought I'd follow up with this so that I don't mislead you. Good luck!

Wow...how interesting...

Is your computer maybe still under warranty?

Even if it isn't, I wonder if they (Dell) might just let you ask about it and what might have caused it. I've had a lot of situations but never that one...never even heard of it. I imagine in time I too will experience it.

I love a mystery.
I vacuumed out my tower this morning.
I still had a problem where some websites would open and some would just be blank....with that yellow triangle warning down in the left hand corner.
Soooo I did a system restore back a couple of days.
Right now, everything is working fine.
The only thing I can think of is that I interrupted an uninstall of a trial version of Adobe 8 Pro and didn't finish the uninstall. That's the only odd thing that I can think of.
Mystery is the bell. That would denote a hardware problem to me....but...? And I couldn't find one single reference to a bell ringing in the tower (except real bells in real towers, LOL). I can't be the only person with a bell in my puter.
It's not under warranty anymore so I'll just take a wait and see attitude for now.

LOL MP...Now, that's funny. I guess I'll just cut the rope (power cord) to my tower. That'll take care of that!
