Jackpot!!

I found a box late last night; thought it was my daily delivery from Amazon but at closer look, Amazon doesn't put "Go Mustangs!" on my boxes. Hummm, maybe it went to a neighbor who redelivered it to the Home of the Mustangs.

Closer look and it wasn't from Amazon, it was from GWlol!

You would have to see it to appreciate the amazing wrapping job Lalitha did, the colors were like swatches from my dining room decorating project. She even wrapped the sheets of foam packing material. I thought it must be RiverRat's work.

These are the "outer gifts". All softball related cookie cutters and a Mustang cookie cutter. Perfect as we are having a "between games" picnic this weekend and I'm charged with bringing finger food dessert.

And to further warm my heart, cooking tools and a cookbook for my cooking projects with Lily with revolting recipes like Mosquitoes' Toes that Beau will love! Mira, Lalitha's 8 year old, helped with the cookbook.

Then on to the "inner gifts". Again, even the packing material was beautifully wrapped.

The "inner gifts" were amazing too; they include a selection of California products.
A ceramic olive dish, perfect, as I always serve olives to guests.
Olives with Orange & Fennel. I had to resist opening this jar, I'll use these to impress guests.
Raspberry & Violet Preserves. I did open this jar, it was fantastic on my English Muffin.
Bacon Toffee, enough said!

It was a good thing that I had plenty of help unwrapping all the gifts.

Lalitha really did her homework. Great job, I thank you for your thoughtfulness AND your packing skills.

Cathy- So glad it arrived safely! I was first worried that the items would break, and then I was worried it was lost somehow. I had misplaced the UPS slip and was hunting for it all of yesterday so that I could track the package!

The olives, the jam and the chocolate are all local from san francisco bay area. Northern California has a strong foodie culture and the little shop in my town where I got the items had it packaged as a "San Francisco special gift basket" (ann_t ---> I believe that counts as 1 item :). The guys who run the shop were really excited about the swap and wanted to make sure that they did a good showing for bay area.. The packaging was a very entertaining process :). I got to select the wrapping paper and they even compared the colors to the jam to make sure the specific shade worked! H

Hope Beau and Lily enjoy making the baseball cookies. The mustang cookie cutter was delayed shipping and took forever to arrive. I barely made it to the shipping date cutoff.

Wow, another great swap box. I love that cookbook, I'm betting we'll get to see some of Beau and Lily's creations in the future.

I didn't even know they made a Mustang cookie cutter, what a great idea. All that and bacon toffee, how could it go wrong.

Overdid it yesterday - even if each bag only weighs 10 lbs, I handled each one twice so that was 500 lbs of leaves in/out of the truck, plus bending and shoveling. Sore back today. Any ideas whether I should spread these tomorrow and get the burlap bags on top before the hurricane (figure wet burlap won't blow away), or just try to put 25 garbage bags in a pile in the woods (put as many as I can fit in the empty pallet compost bin 4x4x4) and hope they won't blow away? No room in basement/garage since we have to secure the grill, trash cans, empty rain barrels (we will set 1 up) etc.

I've also been longing for a fringe tree but have never seen it for sale in my area. From what I've read about them they can be grown as either an understory tree or out in the open. My mature dogwood is in decline and needs to be cut down but my young redbud is going strong. I really like both trees. You really lucked out getting what sounds like large trees for free! I did and at cliq studio and a few others but my husband wants ones fully assembled rather than need to be assembled. Tomorrow the Amish cabinets company are coming to measure and give me an estimate. That will give me a few different options. The workers are BACK!! Yesterday we finally received a check from the mortgage company for a portion of our money. Good grief what an ordeal. And instead of the check being made out just to us it's made out to us and our contractors company. So he endorsed it and gave me a copy of his business w9 with his signature on it. We go to our bank and immediately there's a problem. We are told it can't be deposited into our account it must be deposited into the contractor business account. We went round and round. Nope not budging. We don't owe that amount to the contractor it's our money not his. Well we had to call him to come to the bank and deposit our entire check into his account. Now please tell me how this protects me the homeowner? This is how contractors are running off with huge sums of money! So all the money is in his account. We trust him and hopefully he will deposit our money back into our account today but good grief what happens if he doesn't. I just think this is the most ridiculous display of stupidity. What do you think the mortgage company would do if that happens and we have no funds to fix the house because this position they are putting homeowners in that's a definite possibility. No doubt they would come after the homeowner. I hope my contractor deposits my money!

Don... you're right that small scale worm bin composting tends to not have quite the critical mass necessary to achieve the 160-180F temp range of larger composting piles but don't completely disregard temp differentials within the worm bin. Last winter I would frequently poked around my bins (down in the basement where ambient temps ranged ~65F) with an IR pyrometer and found 20F differentials within a foot of each other not uncommon. I even found a couple locations registering near 97F at times... that's enough to cause the worms to stay away... they seem to begin returning when the temps dropped to below 85F. Those temperature hot-spots came from deposits of green juice pulp and powdered grains mostly. However you've got the right idea to feed only over on one end of the bin so the worms will have the other end to wait out the heat-wave in. The worms may not need a rounded diet but do keep in mind where you intend the castings to go... if its going into the garden or into container pots then the plants could maybe use a well rounded diet. Crushed eggshells will add calcium and kitchen refuse (plant matter) will add many minerals... which will wind up in chelated forms, excellent for feeding plants. Also carbohydrates are needed by many soil organisms for energy and amino acids to build... healthy soil organisms support healthy plant life. All manner of vegetable/fruit and grain (like stale bread, etc) wind up in our worm bin instead of the trash. We are up to six 30-gallon bins from which I harvested 90 gallons of quality vermicompost this fall and expect to continue to do every 6 months. I supplement their diet with layer mash from the feed store when our kitchen scraps are not enough... can't beat 40-lbs for under $12... the stuff is so nutrient dense just half of that will last all winter. Ultimately the cycle will be complete when the castings go into the soil and the plants incorporate it. Coffee grounds are good... fortunately not having eyes, worms never go to sleep so they'll be able to handle the caffeine (its a joke).

What a thoughtful, and well researched swap box! The preserves and olives sound both unusual and delicious. Love that bowl. Bacon AND toffee all in one. Oh my! And everything is beautifully presented. I know Cathy appreciates the attention to detail.

The cookbook and kid baking set are adorable and all the softball goodies are obviously perfect.

Ni-i-ice! What a fun and thoughtful box, Lalitha. Cathy I know you'll have a blast with the gkids (soooo jealous...).

You'll have to report on the bacon toffee.

I love that cookbook. I have Gross Grub and Gross Goodies but I hadn't seen this one, so I went to Amazon and there are three! Gotta have 'em.

Wow! Someone got spoiled :) Great swap box. Love the kiddie (hard to read but pretty sure that's what it says) pan baking set, and the cutters. Cookbook looks really interesting! Preserves and olive bowl are ALWAYS useful.

A great box. I'd have loved to see the guys trying to match papers to the items. San Francisco at it's finest. So love that you ordered a mustang cutter to go with the rest of the baseball theme. Very special box and those items that were in the gift basket certainly count as one. Smiles. Ya did great for the Bay Area Lalitha.

Riverrat- The bacon toffee is from a local artisan chocolate place called Snake & Butterfly.
