Failed Updates Windows XP

I have windows XP on my desktop, and have automatically updated since I got the computer several years ago, with no problems. I was just looking at my update history, because I seemed to have a problem updating a windows update today, and it shows that every update has been successful except for on August 28/08 where I had two failed updates.

Specifically, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806); and, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929).

Any idea about what I should do? Thank you.

I would skip sp3, have you tried searching this forum to see all the posts and problems with sp3?

You can go back and find that KB item for the .NET update and try doing it again.

Thanks for your advice. I have noticed there is a stir about the SP3; but I'm not aware of the exact problem with it. I'll try the other update again, though.

ok. I'll look into those, in the mean time can you do this, it's a simple download, I want to see the event log and a few things. Please download MiniToolBox http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe and run it. See link below, Checkmark following boxes: List last 10 Event Viewer log List Installed Programs List Users, Partitions and Memory size List Restore Points Click Go and post the result. Click the link below, then "save" the file to the desktop and "run" it, post the log it creates. Bunky, many people have been in the same situation. Downloading a malware scanning program sounds like a great idea until you loose internet access on the computer. I would try to download some anti-virus and malware scanning software from another computer and transfering it to your system with a flash drive or CD-R disc. I would also try to borrow a Windows XP Professional installation disc from a friend or relative. It will allow you to run commands from the Recovery Console and may accept your product key if you have to reinstall. I just purchased a new laptop and one of the priorities in my selection was a reinstallation DVD for the operating system. Many systems include a recovery partition, but an OS disc is a necessity when it comes to hard drive crashes and some malware infections.

Suggest more and specific info. This is somewhat confusing -- "but not install windows or microsoft" Which trend version. Which MS updates? Have you disabled the antivirus while attempting to download and install? After downloading have you also tried finding the update file via Windows Explorer then right clicking the file then Open? If a new computer and was purchased locally or from a national chain, have you contacted the source?

blocking sp3 does not in anyway block any other updates so do not worry about that. Minnie what has you confused? did you not know sp3 had been installed on your pc? It went out through auto updates as stated in the original post. susanjn be very very happy do a little dance and rejoice you are one of the lucky ones that is all I can say. (or you have not noticed yet the effects) The horrors others have experienced are quite true and quite numerous and still happening. Anyone doing the install with out first disabling all other programs and most especially any type of security programs including AV, firewall etc can definitely expect problems. Best way to do it still is to go to the actual sp3 download site and download the full sp3 update version(NOT from windows updates), then turn off every thing on the pc or best start in safe mode and try to install. If you have IE7 you better uninstall it prior to putting on sp3 as specified in the instructions listed in an above post. I still don't have it don't plan on getting it.

Recently I had failed updates also. My solution was to write down the K number assigned to each update and searched for it at the Microsoft Updates website. As I found each individual update I downloaded and installed manually. I had to do that for each update. Try doing it like that and you might eventually get them installed. A good program to have would be Belarc that can tell you exactly what update you are missing.

Thanks daylily. I checked my lists of programs (in add/remove), and the .NET update is being shown as installed on my computer (the SP3 isn't installed, though). I suspect the .NET update isn't installed correctly, though, since my update history shows that it was a failed installation.

Not sure what to do from here - whether to try to uninstall it (which I hear can be a problem), and re-install it; or assume it's installed correctly. Thank you for the link, as well.

If it is showing installed in add remove programs I think I would just leave it alone, or if you really want to try to get it again I would remove it from add remove before trying again.

Not in the add/remove see below, You'd be well advised to delete the updates in question before re-downloading.

You'll find them in C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Download
