Failed Updates Windows XP

I have windows XP on my desktop, and have automatically updated since I got the computer several years ago, with no problems. I was just looking at my update history, because I seemed to have a problem updating a windows update today, and it shows that every update has been successful except for on August 28/08 where I had two failed updates.

Specifically, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806); and, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929).

Any idea about what I should do? Thank you.

I would skip sp3, have you tried searching this forum to see all the posts and problems with sp3?

You can go back and find that KB item for the .NET update and try doing it again.

Thanks for your advice. I have noticed there is a stir about the SP3; but I'm not aware of the exact problem with it. I'll try the other update again, though.

ok. I'll look into those, in the mean time can you do this, it's a simple download, I want to see the event log and a few things. Please download MiniToolBox http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe and run it. See link below, Checkmark following boxes: List last 10 Event Viewer log List Installed Programs List Users, Partitions and Memory size List Restore Points Click Go and post the result. Click the link below, then "save" the file to the desktop and "run" it, post the log it creates. Still no security patches as far as I read, so it could the announcement give a false sense of security. From what I see most didn't care anyway and will continue to operate it. Seems like Windows 8 is one big beta test, and all the results can be used to make a better Windows called 9. Kind of like Vista was to Windows 7. When I first saw Windows 8, I though it was made by Fisher Price, and then there's that split personality thing.. I think we are supposed to skip every other operating system.

While it's a good idea not to run windows with administrator rights while browsing the web because it just makes it easier for malware to secretly dowload and install, unfortunately, I believe running as a limited user will not permit some windows updates to install. So when you tried to install windows updates, was it as administrator or limited user? Below is a support page from Microsoft. You also may want to make sure you are virus free. AVG update failing

OP never said what version of AVG. Using AVG 7.5, XP-2. I had update problems for quite a while recently. Not sure if it was part of the update problems they refer to now, but I finally found a link to DL 7.5 again. Part of the install was removal of the old installation. It was easy and is working perfectly now, just as I'd become accustomed to. Can post link if you're looking for 7.5. Support may end 12/31/08 but I'm willing to stick with it as long as its supported. Love programs that do what they promise without slowing things down or constant nagging. Sandy

Recently I had failed updates also. My solution was to write down the K number assigned to each update and searched for it at the Microsoft Updates website. As I found each individual update I downloaded and installed manually. I had to do that for each update. Try doing it like that and you might eventually get them installed. A good program to have would be Belarc that can tell you exactly what update you are missing.

Thanks daylily. I checked my lists of programs (in add/remove), and the .NET update is being shown as installed on my computer (the SP3 isn't installed, though). I suspect the .NET update isn't installed correctly, though, since my update history shows that it was a failed installation.

Not sure what to do from here - whether to try to uninstall it (which I hear can be a problem), and re-install it; or assume it's installed correctly. Thank you for the link, as well.

If it is showing installed in add remove programs I think I would just leave it alone, or if you really want to try to get it again I would remove it from add remove before trying again.

Not in the add/remove see below, You'd be well advised to delete the updates in question before re-downloading.

You'll find them in C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Download
