How to stop slow load

Frequently, I'll find a web page is loading too slowly or not at all. I will attempt to stop the loading by using the red x button on my address bar, and often it will do nothing. Similarly, the escape key on the keyboard fails to stop the load. Finally, I'll just have to use ctl-alt-delete to kill the load so I can move on to something else.

Is there anything I can do to fully "activate" the red x or escape key?

I was having that same problem a while back when I had little protection working and/or updated. I couldn't even use the control/alt/delete and delete there feature. I was having to push the button on the tower to get things stopped and logged of.

I then got AVG free antivirus,
Spybot Search and Destroy, and some other stuff.

Are you well protected? Have you scanned lately? What kind of protection might you have?

I have Trend Micro antivirus and Windows Defender, and I have scanned many times. I operating with Windows XP and have Windows Explorer 7.

I have no problem whatsoever after I first start my computer. My computer brings up our names, I click my name and it goes to the desk top. First I click up mail, and that takes a minute. Then I click on Internet Explorer, and that can take some time. (I think my computer automatically goes through a brief virus scan when I first click on I.E. Once my home page (Roses Forum) comes up, there are no more delays. I move from one forum to the next almost magically. My husband has zillions of I Tunes on our computer, and I think that is the cause of the initial delay. Why don't you call your provider, or ask on our Computer help Forum? I take that back. I just clicked on Preview Message, and stopped it at 30 seconds. I'll try again. Good luck Sammy

It's difficult to be really objective about this. Part of my problem is having gone from dialup to Comcast broadband about six months ago. That was supposed to improve my speed by a factor of at least 20 or something, but it seemed more like 4. There's great variability in how fast these pages load. I never sit here with a stopwatch, but oftentimes I'd say they load in two to three seconds; I like that. About 10 to 20 percent of the time it takes fifteen seconds or more, and when that happens I close out the site and do something else. The variation in speed might have to do with how many other people in the vicinity are using the service. I'm afraid that as more and more people use broadband, and use it intensively for video downloads, etc., the networks will be slowed. Then the ISP's will be promoting a new premium service for additional fees. The ads/surveys/etc. have been tolerable over the past six months. The worst were those "video ads" that I couldn't get rid of, blocked all the site content, and would follow down the page with the scroll. When I got those, the only solution was to exit, cursing. And I don't see that triangular survey one anymore that would shoot in from the left.

First thing is check and see what all is running when the computer starts a lot of programs that do not need to start right off will be a major problem. Check by hitting control,alt,delete once and a screen comes up showing what programs are running and more important are the process's running. Before you stop anything stop by Black Viper's page and make sure it is sate to stop. then after stopping what programs you can reboot and it should be faster. It's been happening to me off and on the past few days. Also started seeing ads again out of the blue. Had to log in the other day and when I did the in-text links were back. Quickly scrambled to disable those irritating things!

I installed the update suggested in "railheadwitz's" post. The problem persists. If anything, my computer is now more sluggish after the 2.2mb download.

Questions:

What about temporarily disabling the phishing filter to see if in fact this is the problem? How do I do it and what dangers am I exposed to as a result?

Is there a way to get rid of the update I downloaded since it is doing no good?

I don't use the phishing filter, I shut it off on all of my machines. I find it annoying and time consuming. I'm careful where I go and never needed it all these years.

Do a general cleanup.
To clean out unwanted files.

Start - Control Panel - Internet Options open -
Delete cookies, Delete files (select all off-line content) - Click OK to Exit.

Then go to Start - Run - Enter %temp% - Click OK - Click Edit - Click Select All - Delete.

Start - Run-Type - C:\windows\temp - OK - and select everything except
temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete them.
Then Restart your computer.
The above does the same as CCleaner.

Then use the Defragmenter.
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Defragmenter - Analyze and Defragment

RB,
I'm still using IE6, but I would imagine you could go to Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove programs, at the top Check 'Show updates', find KB928029, highlight and click 'Remove'. Restart computer.
