Bosch v. KitchenAid dishwashers

Have narrowed it down to these two....both models we are looking at have a 46 dba, which is important as kitchen adjacent to tv roon. Big concern I have read with KA is the side vent ruining cabinets due to steam. Appliance dealer said as long as you get one with a "closed" vent not a problem...because of regulations they have to put a vent, even if it remains closed. This dealer did not carry Bosch....do they vent out the bottom? Thanks for any info!!

If it were required - ALL WOULD HAVE THEM !

They don't.

Why would you buy something from a company that clearly doesn't know how to design some units or has enough quality control / testing to figure out that would be a problem before selling it ???

Stick to Bosch, Miele, Asko.

@Joaniepoanie: The Appliance dealer is taking you for a ride. I would recommend a different salesperson or a new store.

ALL KA KUDE series dishwashers have this went. I cancelled my KUDE order and switched to bosch myself.

The name of the user here who broke this awful awful design flaw escapes me but thanks to her we are all distancing from KA dw... not to mention KA wall ovens as well.

Good information, I wasn't aware of KitchenAid quality problems. We did plan to take a couple of plates and bowls to the store when we look at the Bosch...I'm sure that the KitchenAid would be fine in that area. My only reservation about the Bosch at this point is the stories that I've heard about the dishwasher smell problems. We do have an air gap installed now, though, so that may or may not prevent us from getting that problem... We never use heated dry on the GE that we have that we're getting rid of, just "flash dry". That leaves plastic somewhat wet, so whichever of the above that we get, Bosch or KitchenAid will most likely be somewhat better *smile*. Thanks. -Roger

I had the then top-of-the-line Bosch DW for about 5 years in our prior home and learned the hard way about etching (NOT Bosch's fault, but a learning curve I had to go through to learn how to avoid etching - not the point of this post) The Bosch cleaned well enough, but it was a bit noisier than I was expecting and I wasn't thrilled with my loading options. Looked hard for my new DW in my new house and wound up buying Miele Excela. I have no regrets and love these DWs! The height adjustment on the top large rack (not the silverware tray) is SO easy and intuitive - I'm constantly using it. I also like that the silverware tray can be half-removed as needed to accommodate stemware in the top rack. The dishes come out really clean, and I don't mind at all having to clean out a filter, which I never had to do with the Bosch. The Excela DW is SUPER quiet and I have pulled it open while its running and been surprised by being sprinkled w/water bc I didn't know it was running. I have the model that is able to be fully paneled and it blends very nicely with my surrounding cabinetry - often visitors don't realize where the DW is. It goes through Jet Dry quickly, but as I recall so did the Bosch. I've become "sold" on overall Miele quality with other appiances in my home. Meanwhile, my brand new Bosch washing machine has been nothing but trouble from day one, but I think I may have a lemon bc many on GW loved this machine which is partially why I bought it. Miele dropped the top solo function with fixed parameters in favor of a sensor wash that monitors the dirt and adjusts accordingly. It sprays out of all arms instead of the top two and you can load anywhere (instead of the top) which could be good or bad depending on YOUR perspective. Just a soapbox rant- I'm not convinced that the Boschs achieve the same performance on 60% less water. They may have a program that uses 2 gallons for rating purposes, but you'll prob. never use it because it won't clean well. They don't have new or superior spray arm technology or design that allows them to use less water. IF they did, everyone would hear about it and the other players would be trying to figure a way around the patents.

Just to add a data point, I will never buy KA again. Two years ago, KA actually bought back my top-of-the-line dw at full price because the board kept fritzing out and they couldn't replace it. So, because KA did the right thing, I bought another top-model KA (KDTM404) because I'm naive like that. After one year, the new model stopped cleaning dishes. It's out of mechanical warranty by this time and, not wanting to endure any more of KA's "customer service," I and my engineer dad embarked upon repairs. We narrowed the problem down to the pump assembly and purchased another (over $200) to replace it. Get the dw apart and, surprise, the assembly doesn't fit. It's identical to the old assembly, but something is off. I disassemble the old assembly and discover that the metal impeller in the old pump has shredded itself. So we frankensteined the old assembly to the pump from the new assembly and after a weekend's worth of labor the dw now works again, who knows for how long. None of this answers the question of why a pump in a year-old, very expensive dishwasher would spontaneously self-destruct. No, I do not place auto parts, road gravel, or shrapnel in the dw. It also doesn't answer why KA can't make parts correctly. So no more KA. Ever.

I would second that you should find a new dealer. Find one that sells both KA and Bosch(and not sears or lowes). In my experience, almost every dealer that sells both will reccommend Bosch over KA. And if they happen to sell Miele, they will reccommend that brand.

IMHO, KA isn't even in the same league.

The only reason I can see buying a KA is if for some reason you insist on an exposed heating element.

Thanks everyone! I was referring to EPA? regulations/all this new Energy Star stuff....that is what she said...by law they have to put a vent in but KA "closed" it off....I think you are all right....why take the chance of ruining my new cabs? KA is actually Whirlpool now but supposedly their higher end. I asked this dealer about Bosch...she said they don't carry Bosch, LG or Samsung because of "service issues." I will look around for other dealers...would like to purchase locally, but you sure can't beat prices at AJ Madison!
