VLC - audio stopped working with downloaded Utubes

Win7 64bit --- VLC played the Youtube videos (mp4) last week and this week no audio with the same videos, as well as new ones.

Audio present with DVDs and online at youtube.

Uninstalled LVC and downloaded new one. Installed and still no audio with any youtube video.

Has anyone had this happen?

Try a simple restart of the computer first, Then:

See link for possible help, audio from youtube comes from flash, check the basics first. All other audio works on pc and this is only a problem with youtube?

Thanks for the reply Zep. Nope, the problem is with VLC only - it's my default player for mp3 & mp4.

Windows media player plays the DVDs; tried the youtube videos on it and they did play.

I've been thru the settings on VLC - seem to be in order. Will do some searching on Flash.

How wonderful to find this site, though I must admit that it took me some time to find one that discusses this subject. The reason I sought it out was because I have been listening to audiobooks for years and they have brought me many hours of pleasure. Like you, though, I find that a book can be absolutely ruined for me by a poor narrator. I can be distressed by an irritating voice as much as the next person but what I find truly disturbing is when words are mispronounced. It is difficult for me to believe that narrators who are considered to be professionals, do not take the time and make the effort to research the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. Another pet peeve, though a minor one, is when a narrator uses the accent of a particular language for a character who is speaking that language. A french person speaking french does not have an "accent" unless that person is french and speaking english. It sounds foolish and often the narrator is difficult to understand in his/her attempt to illustrate the fact that the character is speaking in a language other than english. Other than that, what joy to be able to "read" while doing laundry, vacuuming, working in the yard, etc. :)

A narration shouldn't sound as dramatic as a radio play but different vocal tones are used so that a listener can distinguish when a different person is speaking in a conversation (and who that person is). I found that I had to "learn" through practice how to effectively listen to an audio book. It wasn't automatically easy or comfortable for me, but that came with more time and experience. I generally agree that authors often make poor readers for their own books. An exception I recently came upon was the author David McCullough reading his book "The Wright Brothers". Most of you know him from his longtime association with shows on Public TV, though his main gig through the years has been writing award winning non-fiction books. His exceptional voice and intonation put most audio readers to shame, it was as good a book to listen to as I can remember. As for living and retired authors and estate managers who authorize ghost writers and "co-authors" to continue the production of books in another's name, I think the practice is outrageous. It's an inexcusable demonstration of greed. I stop reading any work of an author who begins that practice, I don't care who it is. Imagine what the reaction would be if it were announced that new books from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens would be written by Bob Robertson and released next year. Or four new paintings by Van Gogh, or by Renoir, or by whomever, were to be produced by Fred Funk and released in the spring. People would be outraged by that. Why is it an acceptable practice for authors?

To Linelle's point, sometimes I find I like a series of shorter stories when travelling. Your party might all enjoy the Sherlock Holmes series, read by Rick Kishner (sp?). These are 45 minute short stories, very well read and, well, what more is there to say about AC Doyle's writing? You can find them HERE, just click on Itunes U under the twitter and fb icons. You can download them while on wifi before you leave instead of streaming. I agree with writersblock that Librivox can be amateurish as the readers are volunteers. But anything read by Karen Savage (you can search by reader) I would recommend. Not sure if she is British, her accent varies by author, but her rendition is perfect. Among her books are Jane Austen's, The Treasure Seekers, and The Secret Garden (see fave children's book thread). These may not be the best selections for your travel companions, so consider this a PSA. Also about librvox, you can search by "solo reader". I'm wondering if installing Photoshop Elements 6 on this machine had something to do with the problem. My Adobe Flash is ver. 10.0___?

I doubt it. And I don't think it's flash either. So what is it? I'm not sure what to tell you. Does the VLC player produce any error at all?

No error messages. Plays the video without sound. Turning the volume up produces nothing. As tho it's on permanent mute. Which I also checked.

Just installed the newest Flash and that didn't change matters.

Have you checked this,

Is the Audio setting selected? Go to Settings > Preferences > highlight "Audio" and select "Audio" > click Save.

I am sure you have. Sometimes it's worth just going through the motions again.

I'm not seeing Settings on VLC menu. or should I be in Windows Control Panel?

Raven uses this program hopefully has ideas for you! When you can't figure things out I always resort to a system restore, even though it should have nothing to do with this issue. You can always undo a restore point and return back if unsatisfied with the results of the restore. The other thing I do is boot to Safe Mode. Do the uninstall from there or try the player in safe mode. Sometimes uninstalling in safe mode does not always work though, you get a message saying the Windows installer is not available.

Did more sleuthing and at last found there's an incompatibility issue. Will be removing this pic.
Still can't figure why it worked for awhile.........

Thanks for sticking with this Zep! Not so alone in the forest.
More sleuthing. Reading about registry changes, removing %appdata%\vlc folder, codecs (VLC doesn't use them), change your audio output module to Waveout, etc. I came across the answer that WORKED! At this URL. I pass it along for anyone else. Too simple.
I wonder if VLC updated without my knowing and it was the update that this system refused to play with? Only thing I can think of.

Does it help if you rename vlc.exe to vlc2.exe? YES :-] OH YES

It is Windows Vista audio mixer that causes issues. Because in Vista (and 7) the mixer is application specific, it can mess up single application to mute. Because the mixer identifies the application by its name, renaming helps. There is also some way to reset the mixer values, but I don't know how to do it.
