Thanks for the reply Zep. Nope, the problem is with VLC only - it's my default player for mp3 & mp4.

Windows media player plays the DVDs; tried the youtube videos on it and they did play.

I've been thru the settings on VLC - seem to be in order. Will do some searching on Flash.

I'm wondering if installing Photoshop Elements 6 on this machine had something to do with the problem. My Adobe Flash is ver. 10.0___?

I doubt it. And I don't think it's flash either. So what is it? I'm not sure what to tell you. Does the VLC player produce any error at all?

No error messages. Plays the video without sound. Turning the volume up produces nothing. As tho it's on permanent mute. Which I also checked.

Just installed the newest Flash and that didn't change matters.

I am sure you have. Sometimes it's worth just going through the motions again.

Raven uses this program hopefully has ideas for you! When you can't figure things out I always resort to a system restore, even though it should have nothing to do with this issue. You can always undo a restore point and return back if unsatisfied with the results of the restore. The other thing I do is boot to Safe Mode. Do the uninstall from there or try the player in safe mode. Sometimes uninstalling in safe mode does not always work though, you get a message saying the Windows installer is not available.

Did more sleuthing and at last found there's an incompatibility issue. Will be removing this pic.

More sleuthing. Reading about registry changes, removing %appdata%\vlc folder, codecs (VLC doesn't use them), change your audio output module to Waveout, etc. I came across the answer that WORKED! At this URL. I pass it along for anyone else. Too simple.
I wonder if VLC updated without my knowing and it was the update that this system refused to play with? Only thing I can think of.

Does it help if you rename vlc.exe to vlc2.exe? YES :-] OH YES

It is Windows Vista audio mixer that causes issues. Because in Vista (and 7) the mixer is application specific, it can mess up single application to mute. Because the mixer identifies the application by its name, renaming helps. There is also some way to reset the mixer values, but I don't know how to do it.
