you should be able to open media player click on help> about and it should have the version number there. yes go ahead and get qt lite, since you have windows 7 I would bet you do have the latest media player. To determine the version of Windows Media Player, click About on the Help menu in Windows Media Player, and then note the version number below the Copyright notice. If the Help menu is not displayed, press ALT+H, and then click About.

Thanks for sticking with this Zep! Not so alone in the forest. More sleuthing. Reading about registry changes, removing %appdata%\vlc folder, codecs (VLC doesn't use them), change your audio output module to Waveout, etc. I came across the answer that WORKED! At this URL. I pass it along for anyone else. Too simple. I wonder if VLC updated without my knowing and it was the update that this system refused to play with? YES :-] OH YES It is Windows Vista audio mixer that causes issues. Because in Vista (and 7) the mixer is application specific, it can mess up single application to mute. Because the mixer identifies the application by its name, renaming helps. There is also some way to reset the mixer values, but I don't know how to do it.
