Wireless security

I set up my pc that is on dsl with a netgear router, so I could use my laptop in or out of the house. Everything works, but I am uncertain how to add a WEP? security code. Do I add it to the pc or to the laptop or both -- and where do I go to add it. So far I have only use the laptop to surf and not log in.

You need to add security to the router and to any PC that connects using wireless. If the desktop is connected using a cable, there's no need to set up security on it.

If the wireless card in the laptop and the router support WPA, you're better off using WPA than WEP.

My router does have WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK security. It states touchless wif security simplifies the selection and activation of wireless security. Have no idea what that means.

I had to use default when setting up router to my pc and laptop. The router sits between the pc and dsl modem; I use the laptop as a wireless.

Now how do I set up the security?

brickeyee misses the boat a touch. I've fooled mostly with Ademco/Honeywell at my house, but it has a 12V sealed lead acid battery in the panel (think of a small version of a car battery). You'll probably have this regardless of wired/wireless sensors. It keeps the panel running for a time when the power goes out. Wired sensors run off AC via a power supply in the panel, and the battery if AC goes off. Wireless sensors each have their own battery in addition to this. For a wired system, contacts at doors windows are just switches and don't use any power. Other devices (motion, smoke, etc) do. We have mix of the two- wireless for the original alarm, wired that I added when we remodeled. The wireless ones have been more of a pain (alarm starts to behave odd when battery on motion detector runs low). But I did have a few recessed contacts that were messed up between when I put them in and when all the finish work was done. Replacing those took some effort. Whether you then have a wired or wireless (cellular) connection to central station monitoring is another thing entirely.

The router does have a password and the sharing feature in Win7 is turned off. Accessing the router requires the password but when we got to the router's webpage, all our laptops are listed and all our files can be accessed. 2Wire, the manufacturer of the router, says it shouldn't be a "real" problem b/c the router's transmission can be reduced to a smaller area. That doesn't change the fact that all laptops files can be accessed by everyone in the house via the router web page.

If you want to reuse your existing wireless sensors, make sure your alarm panel is made by the same manufacturer. If you have existng Ademco sensors, you must use an Ademco panel with a wireless receiver such as the Ademco 5881. Nextalarm will support any number of different panels that use the 'contact ID' signalling standard. Don't feel you must use one of the panels that Nextalarm sells. I use a Ademco Vista 20P and have it monitored by Nextalarm. Those wireless sensors aren't cheap. You will probably want to try to reuse them. All wall outlets where your nightstands will be in the bedroom should have USB plugins. I have installed them in my home and it is great. I would put one in the kitchen, and living room as well. No bulky charger taking up room. I now have two functional outlets and a USB charging port for my phone. I also have a dimmer switch with remote control in my master bedroom which is nice. Heated towel bars are another option. They are either hardwired or plugged in. The hardwired version looks better in my opinion. Your master bath shower can be fully automated with electric controls so you preset your water temp and then your have your mood lighting and speakers in the shower as well. http://www.us.kohler.com/us/DTV-Custom-Showering-Experience/content/CNT2400429.htm If you wanting to go insanely fancy and budget isn't a factor they have glass doors that can be installed in your shower that frost when shut. The sky is the limit with home automation in todays world. If you want to have a lot of fun you can get a PLC and you can wire the entire home into it. You would then be able to program any switch to turn on any light in the entire home. You can set up and program timers into it so when you turn on the light A light B turns on 5 seconds later and so on. Making it seems as if your lights are preceding you. You are talking 100's of thousands of dollars though but since budget wasn't discussed I will throw it out there for the future person to look into.

your wireless router should have detailed instructions on how to set up a secure network included with it if you do not have the instructions try going to the manufacturers site and looking up your model and seeing if you can get a pdf manual there.
There are many good sites online that tell you how to set up secure networks but it is best just to use what your router brand tells you.

Be absolutely sure you change the default password on the router to some thing that is a non sense password not a real word but a combo of letters and numbers, tape it to the bottom of your router so you don't lose it.

The router box states double firewall portection from external hackers attacks. If that is of any help

calirose, while it is true that your router provides you with firewall protection, that is not the security that protects your network from someone next door or just driving by from using it. I have a Netgear router, and I just followed the directions that came with it. If you don't have printed instructions, do what ravencajun suggested and go to Netgear's site. You should find complete instructions there for securing your network. You will need your model number and any other information they ask for.
