Low Voltage U/C Wiring Help (also posted in Electrical Wiring)
Comments (1)The transformer should be in an accessible location. There should be a switch between the 120V line and the transformer. You really don't want to have the transformer being fed electricity all the time. Using the transformer as a junction box is not the best idea. In other words, probably no....See Morelow voltage lighting/electrical -- DIY help needed!
Comments (2)We are finishing our kitchen which has been rough wired for low-voltage lighting (we are getting the 'Ambiance' under cabinet lighting made by Seagull). We have three places for under cabinet lighting, and our electricians (who did the rough-in) installed just ONE transformer in the basement directly beneath the kitchen. All the undercabinet lights are on the same circuit. I can't help you on the other questions, though - my cabinet maker hasn't marked for the upper cabinets, and I'm not doing plugmold. Good luck!...See MoreRepurpose High Voltage 14/2 Romex wire for Low Voltage LED strips
Comments (3)Hello Everyone. Have no fear, the LED strip lights I'm using only pull 5.5watts per foot. I'm doing about 15 feet of lights. 15x5.5= 82.5watts @ 12v DC. The longest run is probably 15 feet maybe? The wire could easily be 18 AWG or even 20 AWG in all seriousness (although wouldn't be recommended). 14 AWG is MORE than enough. :-) Thanks so much for the sanity check and verification that using the NM cable is all good in this use case. After writing this I did find other posts on other forums of people who had the same scenario. It seems to check out from multiple sources. Thank you....See MoreLow Voltage wiring in New Build
Comments (7)I know how much it cost in labor to have to add wiring later to an existing house and then have all the necessary holes patched up, so we decided to pre-wire as much as possible in the house we are building. I'm really excite about running low-voltage power to all the windows for powered blinds. I have no desire to be changing out batteries on anything, if I can help it! If we decide not to use those wires we only wasted a few hundred dollars in material and labor. I've used ring cameras with batteries before and I am also looking forward to powered and wired cameras. Everyone in the house still uses a PC as their main device, so ethernet connections will be in several locations. We are doing a custom build so we were able to select our own low-voltage supplier/installer. I agree with Jeffrey above, there is nothing cheap in 2021!...See Moreocscott
