I fear the GD has contracted a nasty because of her movie downloading at Torrent..posted the relevant info and logs over at Landzdown....saugen48

Thanks DA, that appears to be for Win7..GD's is Vista64..Been thru all the suggestions there and more..that is why I believe there is a nasty submerged somewhere and thought best to go LD and let the nastie experts at it...lol

SCG, LOLOL Even tho I'm very bright I'm also old enough to know I'll never know or understand everything! So too bad about my address, I'll stay incognito! :D Since next week is not as busy as this week I may visit the garden centers. I'll just have to try very hard to maintain my will-power and just enjoy looking. I'm usually OK with going to the garden centers at this time of year as I no longer keep plants indoors and it's too cold outdoors still. So I can look and dream. Probably should bring my camera and take some pics. Luckily I'll be away in June so won't buy anything until after that. By then there won't be as much selection and it's late to seed most plants so I'll probably be able to control myself fairly well. To tell you how good my will-power is I've made several lists from online garden catalogs and sent them all to the trash. I almost never order anything online but in the depths of winter enjoy looking at pics of flowers and can run up a total that could be disastrous to my budget. No problem tho when I've had my fun with a click it can all be in the trash. I'd need more than the space I've allotted for my garden if I bought everything I like, probably could plant the entire 1/4 section! LOL But then I'd need staff, and this could go on and on so I'll quit this nonsense for now! Marcia, you did very well altho I don't understand "no desire to get anything". I want almost every plant there is but realize it's not based on reality for me.

if you were looking on craigslist don't give up hope because there are definitely some good ones out there, I have been lucky and got great deals, you definitely want to be able to try them out and make sure they run properly and that the copy of windows on them is legit, try going to windows update site with it and have it scan the pc to see if it has any problems, if it is not a legit copy you may find out by doing the windows updates trial. I also always go to belarc.com and let it run on the pc and then view the info it gives about the pc to make sure what they are telling you is really what is in that pc. I also go to the event viewer and look for red flags and to device manager and look for yellow flags.

First I have to confess that I have not gotten to backing up the hard drive - or working on the start up programs. Other computer issues in the family took priority - and then we had non-technological family difficulties. So my focus has been elsewhere. The internet connection still sometimes drops. Less often but it happens. I can just buy a wireless dongle. The laptop had been running cooler after getting all the bogus programs off. But lately it's sluggish again and running hot. The hard drive is making a bad noise. Not sure how to describe it but kind of like a car struggling to turn over. It does it just occasionally - some times if it's just trying to perform some action - and just now when I started the laptop. (It has not made the sound since it started up). Since hard drives are mechanical, does this sound like the hard drive might be failing? if it's hardware failure, is there any point in running chkdsk? or any other test? If the hard drive is failing, could that be causing it to run hot and slow at times? seems logical to me but I have no idea. I could inexpensively replace the hard drive. And get a wireless dongle. I imagine all that could be done for under $100 and just a small amount of time. The other troubleshooting I did was partly to learn. Here's what I like about the computer and why I may want to save/keep it: great size - 13", light - but has a great, great keyboard for such a small laptop. like the trackball and no touchpad. includes a free upgrade to Vista (so it could be used after XP is not supported) What I don't like: ongoing wireless adapter problems, sometimes running hot, possible failing hard drive, no web cam. Not sure if I'll put it to sleep soon - or try to resuscitate it. If I decide to let it die a peaceful death, there's no need to back up the HD. If I decide to replace the hard drive (if it needs it) or keep it if the HD's fine, I will back it up and make that a priority. And of course, now that I'm writing this post, it's behaving absolutely fine. Quick, cool, no noise. Thanks. Lynn.

That http://s.ad127m.com . . . link is not a full url but the ad127m.com domain is down right now, so I'm thinking they've discovered a problem. Perhaps they are the ones infected with malware. The "s" in front of ad127m is a little curious and suspicious, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's something bad, just typical of something bad. ad127m.com is registered to some company in Tel Aviv. If you read about the technicalsupport247.org page, that's a page you're redirected to when the server you just tried to connect to is having problems. I suppose if there's a very recent infection of ad127m.com, google et al might not have picked it up yet.

Maybe the darling granddaughter needs to stop downloading pirated material? Sure seems an easy way to avoid exposure to nasties...

All I can do is warn her...she is an adult and what she chooses to do with that info is up to her..and RC..for your info..she only brought the computer in for a few hours this afternoon and the people at Lzdown were unable to complete her post before she had to leave..so until the job is complete, she will be logged in as me (saugen) and on completion, will log out and register an account for herself...

Strangely, the dll for System File Checker is shown as missing in her ComboFix log as well as two other drivers.

I seen that...have no idea what may have happened.she hasnt called and asked anything..I believe her and the kids may be coming in today unless the plan changed..If she is and normally calls before she does, I will get her to bring the laptop with her again so we can carry on with this and find out what happened

Dont know if its possible to find the missing sfc dll and download..gee hope so, as she does not have vista installation disks, only the restore disks that were made, but would hate to have to reload both SPs and all subsequent updates

corrine_mvp..new game plan..apparently wont be any time while in here for laptop doings..MIL and 13 of her cronies will be arriving this pm on a small bus from their retirement home and we are apparently hosting them for tea/coffee, cake and cookies sort of thing..So dont imagine Ash will have time to carry on with this until she gets home later this pm or evening

Hi, Gene.

I hope the "tea & cookie" thing was a success.

With the recovery disks that were made, Ashley should be able to do a system repair, not a reinstall. She could also try installing the missing files from the links I provided at the end of the thread.

I think that is the game plan..once she removes what she wants from the puter, she is going to set a restore point then do the 3 .dll file downloads and installation..should all go well, she will touch base on the other forum for a new scan..if that works, good, if not, then will use the restore disks..I dont think I have ever seen a system repair option with the disks or are you refering to the restore partition on the HDD..ie: Last known working config etc...
