My granddaughter's excellent progress! (1 pic)

As many of you know, both of my granddaughter's legs (and four ribs) were broken in a terrible car crash in early August. She has a titanium rod in each of her legs, and has gone through a great deal of physical therapy. Next month she'll go back to college to start her junior year. Walking is still not easy, at least for any distance, but look what she did today for the first time in many months!

Granny If I can buy chick pea flower here you should be able to find it. I get mine at the Bin Store, which is store which carries bulk candies, spices, baking goods etc. I am celiac which means I am not supposed to eat wheat so I have lots of different flours. You can also look in the organics section of the supermarket and health food stores. It has a bunch of different names: From Wikipedia: Gram flour is a flour made from ground chickpeas.[1] It is also known as chana flour (Indian), besan (Hindi), kadala maavu (Tamil), "Senaga Pindi" (Telugu), kadale hittu (Kannada), chickpea flour, garbanzo flour and harina de garbanzo (Spanish). Used in many countries, it is a staple ingredient in Indian cuisine, and, in the form of a paste with water or yoghurt, a popular facial exfoliant in India and Pakistan. EG. We get a lot of snow and wind and storms but it is not actually that cold as far as actual temperature. Snow is strange as we get a lot of it but then we can get a lot of rain and it goes quickly. What is really bad is 2 feet of snow that turns into rain at the end. It is really miserable to move. Many years snow doesn't stay on the ground until the middle of January. The biggest gardening problem is that we also never get real hot and not a lot of sunshine so stuff takes a much longer time to grow.

Hrm, that might work for my beds built out of wood, but 5 of my beds are built out of recycled plastic timbers - I'll have to figure out a better way than nails to attach those ones. As far as the seedlings, I found that instead of cutting an X like you do for transplants, I made a circle (3 inches in diameter or so) and then put little rocks around the seedling on the black plastic, it kept the plastic from flapping and damaging the seedlings. This does allow for a "couple" weeds to grow, but it's almost non existent, and still gives you the benefits of warming the soil, water retention, etc.. No matter how "tight" you get the plastic across the bed, when you cut those X's they are going to flap in the wind, so you need something localized to hold them down. Thanks for the ideas, I'll have to think about how I will secure them, as I really love the plastic.

We usually have crappy weather, we get lots of rain, but this year it is beyond ridiculous. We are getting 4 or 5 days in a row with no let up in the rain and big storms, than a crappy day and then more stormy days. It feels like the house is going to lift off its foundations and that I am going to be off to kansas to see the wizard. I forget what the sun looks like! It has been above average temperatures (17c yesterday) one day then freezing the next. We will get 4-5 inches of snow that turns to rain and then gets washed away. I forget what the sun looks like! The dogs and I are getting fat as we have not been doing anything and it has been tuff to even get out for a decent walk. My poor better half is working in the middle east this week and the weather has totally delayed her travel plans forcing her to have to overnight in a hotel at London's Heathrow airport at a cost of 185 british pounds which is close to $400 for a stinking night. The rain took a pause today and I figured I would go out and check out the garden. First thing I notice was that the neighbour's fence had blown down. The moose was though the hill garden recently: Here is the square foot garden beside the cabin today: I think I was talking with EG about swiss chard a while back and here it is after several frosts. I cut this chard to the ground in the fenced square foot garden a couple weeks back and you notice even in this weather it has grown a bit. Amazing stuff and so good with garlic and a little chicken broth. The creek is eroding away beside the creek square foot garden. I hope it stops there, Next year I am going to have to put rocks on the side of the bank here. Here is the strawberry patch where the creek overflowed. The two new areas that I planted square foot style have a bit of sand and silt but I hope will be ok. The creek has really suffered some erosion this last month. ...

Thanks everyone for your kinds words. I bought the fabric from Jo Ann's (50 percent off). It's from Christopher Lowell's line. Here is a better picture with the colors showing more "true". I used a minwax gel stain in dark walnut. I also had to fill some gouges first. When I was done I used Formby's tung oil to make it shine. I will show more pieces of the set when I can get my DH & son to put them in the DR. Then I'll need help with drapes & paint, if you all would be so kind.

The boy who was in a coma (the driver) has recovered from his head injury but is paralyzed from the waist down. My granddaughter sees him often.

A real blessing since we had 8 young people killed instantly in two separate accidents last week. So happy your GD is doing so well.

Congratulations to her. She looks like she is on her way to recovery!

True story, my nephew at about 21 years old broke both of his femurs also and is pretty much recovered. His friends and him were all wearing helmet cams while dirt bike riding over some moogles. He crossed a road, went down the ditch and flew back up the side, when his body went up and front legs landed on the handle bars, flipping over foward. The whole incident was recorded and on facebook!
Well tonight he was at a family dinner, walking just like it never happened. It took a couple years to get close to normal and I am so happy when I see him safe in good health.

Your gdd looks really good next to the bike! Makes me hopeful for her future too.

Wow! I'm sure the rehab didn't seem quick to HER, but it does to ME. Wonderful to see her out and about. How are the survivors coping, mentally?

Wow, that is wonderful to hear! The young sure do recover at a good clip, don't they? My sister had her last surgery to get the rod out of her (previously shattered leg from last year,) so the infection will have no chance of returning and she can get off of antibiotics. I think her recovery, though of course the actual injuries were different, is much slower than your dgd's. I'm so glad to know she's had a good recovery--thanks for posting, Susan.
