Southie, I know you've got it bad. What is it that makes us such slaves to these diseases? It's like an alcoholic that keeps reaching for the bottle which reads "Morning Hangover" in clear bold letters. (I'm allowed to use this annology because I am a recovering alcoholic as well)

We spend so much money, time and effort into our gardening addictions, and the outcome is not always pretty. Why do we keep at it? What pushes us to perservere when we know that the payoff looks bleak? Is it just for the joy of it? Oh come on....how much joy can one flower bring after months of planning, worrying, spending, fretting, preparing, adjusting, , arranging, re-arranging, grooming, designing, tweeking, ammending, agonizing over, wasting, squandering and consuming all resourses for?

As irrational as it sounds, I think we all know the answer to the question. Yes, that one little ole, flower makes everything worth it. That tiny bit of perfection is all the reward we require to do it all again.

You nailed it. It is hard to explain the exhilaration of success.

Plus it isn't instant, so we work for long times on end for nothing, or that magical release. These are very compelling, addictive and rewarding times.

We are lost souls, flowers possibly should be something the program says you shouldn't engage in for at least a year..... if not more.

But on the bright side my ageratum that was sowed in February is starting to flower.......

I was doing so well avoiding CSD until today that is darn seeds were on sale for 49 cents per pkg. plus seeding trays were on sale too!! Thankfully the cute little greenhouse was too big for my pocket but LGE (little greenhouse envy) hit me like a tonne of bricks not sure if I will ever be the same.

CLB don't worry, one day you will have it...BTW can you get more at $.49? LOL!

The downside is I gave all my plants that were about to flower away yesterday. *pout* I had 3 flats of ageratum, african marigold, black eyed susan, alyssum, cosmos, petunia and prairie sun all budding or with open(ing) flowers. I have to repot what I have and they were taking up too much room *sigh*

Which ageratum are you planting?

I knew even before I stepped into the grocery store, that if there was something even remotely tempting, I was going to buy it. I needed something, or rather anything related to gardening.
So I bought a package of acidanthera. I've never grown it and know nothing about it except that it's a tender bulb. It was only 1.59.
I'm feeling a bit better now, but I know the symptoms will flare up again without warning at any time.

Oooh, Marie! Acidanthera smells soooooooo good! Start it now because it seems to take awhile to start blooming. I planted some bulbs a couple of weeks ago and they're not showing yet.

They had packages of some really pretty dahlias too. I didn't buy those because I don't have luck with them, but I told my sister about them, LOL. Just spreading the disease. I'm blaming it on the weather. I'm tired of winter.
Thanks for the heads up Marcia. It didn't say anything on the package. Should I soak them or anything?

It is fortunate that I can accept your allure....the best way to cure yourself is to send me seeds or seedlings,,,the sprouting gods concur

I've never soaked mine, Marie. I just plant them in the spring and store them in the fall, same as begonia or dahlia tubers.

I tried the tall blue planet ageratums, and yellow ones (Lonas Inodora) this year.

You must really go to town planting seeds in order to have so many give-aways. I wish I had more of a picture of how you plant step by step so that I could copy-cat you. I love to give stuff away. Last year I had so many nice veggies to give away...but alas...never enough flowers make it.

I only had give aways because I started so dang many. I tried everything under the sun and lost about 75%. BUT, that was the reason to start so early. I was tired hearing about all the "old" school reasons that had no research or documentation behind them yet were held in such high regard or the latest and greatest that didn't hold much weight. Even now I am going to lose plants because my girls pulled the info tabs and I am not sure what I have done...maybe they are way over fertilized, maybe under LOL, but they look like hell.

Chance favors the prepared mind....arm yourself with knowledge and you are sure to succeed, albeit don't expect it the first time.

I just went to the nursery today, and spent 200 BUCKS! (ouch) on...get this...the same exact stuff I already have planted. Just in case my own seedlings don't make it. What in the heck am I doing, ordering seeds, planting them, codling them...only to go out and BUY some nursery grown ones? You'ld think I would be smarter than that, wouldn't you?

Ha, you have spring itch bad. I'm avoiding the garden centers cause that's exactly what would happen to me.

RWS, I didn't exactly do what you did. buying flowers I have started, BUT I did buy enough bulbs to completely fill a garden I had started seeds for....OMG I am screwed!!!!!!! I have no more room !!!! and some kind hearted addict sent me a couple thousand sunflower seeds I must make a garden for.....oh noooo!!!

Hi SCG, another BC resident here and glad I live far enough away from you that you don't influence me much! LOL I'm doing the same as bdgardener and avoiding the gardening centers. However the other day I did phone to find out their hours! Still haven't gone there yet tho. Also have not even checked my stash of seeds to see what I might want to use up. When at the grocery store I've only once quickly glanced at the seed display.

I'm a very long-time gardener and am trying to adopt other interests besides gardening. It really can take over one's life. I *think* there is hope of avoiding these afflictions with will-power and persistence. ;D However I'll probably be planting seeds directly in the garden later.

I'm keeping my address a secret so you other addicts can't send me seeds. LOL

Well, this so-called "spring" has really put a damper on my addiction. I've only been to one garden centre and it was in Thunder Bay on the weekend. I really had no desire to get anything, so I just browsed. My granddaughter bought herself a geranium, but that was it.

SCG, LOLOL Even tho I'm very bright I'm also old enough to know I'll never know or understand everything! So too bad about my address, I'll stay incognito! :D Since next week is not as busy as this week I may visit the garden centers. I'll just have to try very hard to maintain my will-power and just enjoy looking. I'm usually OK with going to the garden centers at this time of year as I no longer keep plants indoors and it's too cold outdoors still. So I can look and dream. Probably should bring my camera and take some pics. Luckily I'll be away in June so won't buy anything until after that. By then there won't be as much selection and it's late to seed most plants so I'll probably be able to control myself fairly well. To tell you how good my will-power is I've made several lists from online garden catalogs and sent them all to the trash. I almost never order anything online but in the depths of winter enjoy looking at pics of flowers and can run up a total that could be disastrous to my budget. No problem tho when I've had my fun with a click it can all be in the trash. I'd need more than the space I've allotted for my garden if I bought everything I like, probably could plant the entire 1/4 section! LOL But then I'd need staff, and this could go on and on so I'll quit this nonsense for now!

Marcia, you did very well altho I don't understand "no desire to get anything". I want almost every plant there is but realize it's not based on reality for me.

It's easy for me to have self control because there aren't any garden centers here to visit. There will be a couple of nurseries later, but I don't buy much. My garden is mostly dedicated to perennials and I've run out of room. If I want to plant something new I have to remove a plant.

But don't be fooled, I'm still an addict. Today I potted up a seedling that popped up in one of my containers that had been in cold storage. It is probably a weed, but I couldn't just toss it.

I guess i shouldn't have said that i had 'no desire' - of course, i coveted all that i saw, but didn't feel like buying anything. Very sad. However, Floral and Hardy is having a 5 for $10 sale and i'm about to succumb to that!
