I am going to need this board the next few months!

DH is a start up engineer with a semiconductor company and he knew this was probably coming but he has to leave town. He has been able to stay in Austin the last 6 months or so with only have a few trips away. His job is normally 100% travel but he has been helping a company here in Austin. Anywho, they are about to be done installing equipment until Dec. and DH is leaving for three months! Sooo, I am packing (yet again) to put everything in storage and DD and I are going to stay with my sister. DH is so sad he is going to be missing so much as far as the house goes, DD soccer etc. He hates being away from DD (and me of course!). So, I am sure I will be asking a ton of question as things come up with the house. I sure hope y'all don't mind. We are going to try and get most of the big items picked out before he leaves. He will be able to fly home one weekend a month so that is good.

I was feeling a bit overwhelmed a minute or so ago. I thought that the next I packed up it would be to move into our new home. Oh well! At least it is all going in storage and won't be so bad to move into the house. I guess I better go pack. *sigh* Thanks for "listening"!

With the exception of this summer , my wife and i have been seperated as i whitled on the house last two summers.We had quite a bit of help from subs this summer, so we went up together quite a few times. Next summer we will be split again, as i got to get busy on the finish elements of our build.It sucks being apart, but you gotta try and keep the big picture in mind as it will all be worth it in the long run.

You can always turn to your "forum family"!

Sierra's right. You have your "forum family". And think of the knowledge you'll gain being the "go to" person in the family. You might even wind up getting your own GC license when this is done you'll know so much!

Suebot - don't think i'm going to tell you anything that somebody else hasn't said, but since i've had too much experience with deer & rabbits, i figured i'd concur with the remedies that worked for me. i used to live/learned to garden on nantucket and martha's vineyard, where the deer are at least as unreasonably tame and probably more abundant than they are in ct. i've heard stories of people standing 10 ft away from them yelling at them while they chomp on their hydrangea flower buds. one woman i was talking to claimed she saw the deer attacking her dalmation!! anyway, my first thought about your original message was are you sure all damage is due to deer and not rabbits? - when they stand on their hind legs, they can eat quite high - on a couple of my client's properties on the islands, i had more problems with bunnies than deer, especially with my daylilies & echinacea. so, i also found success with the deer away spray products; i can't remember which one i used, but i believe it had garlic & mint in it and i actually liked the way it smelled. the directions said to spray every couple of weeks (??), but i found that i had to spray every couple of days or so & definitely after a rain. it was pretty time consuming. unfortunately, my other success was fencing in the gardens. i just tried to be decorative about it - i used nice cedar posts with caps, bird netting @ 4' high (you can't really see it, so the garden still looks nice), i hung rope along the top of the netting (for a nautical look...). I did throw netting on top of the gardens in the spring until things grew too tall, but i have to admit, the deer hopped in a couple of times (- that would've been a mess i kind of would have liked to see). i now live in maine and have a large cutting garden in my back yard, a good distance from my house and i use the bird netting as the fencing (simply because it was the only fencing i could find that would be high enough in one piece) and it works (doesn't handle snow load, though). i see deer in the back and they walk right around the garden. chipmunks are now my problem. unfortunately, my true feeling is that if the deer want to get to something, they will. sorry to be so lengthy, good luck. just out of curiosity, do you have phlox and is it being eaten - that always gets destroyed the worst for me. -mara

I had mine like Besty and a few others. It was done long ago in 1975 and they made me stay in the hospital for 5 days. Could not understand that, I was ready to go home the next day. I had no pain at all so never took even one pain pill. I have always said the worst part of it was staying in the hospital 5 days and standing up for the first time is kind of strange. It feels like they stretched you open enough to drive a truck through! LOL You'll do fine Stacy and will not regret for one minute you had it done.

Update..... Well my Husband moved out today. I have changed the locks and he or his spoiled adult brats are no longer welcome in my home. All of you are absoultly correct. He did take advantage of me... he had little relationship with his kids before I came along and he saw a giveing person and took EVERYTHING that he could get. Let me shed all the light on the story so you all have a better understanding..... When I met my husband he told me all the things I wanted to hear. How he was gonna protect me and take care of me and make me happy. I would never have to worry about a thing. I beleived these things not because I am gulible but because I honestly thought he was sincere. We meet in Febuary of 2010 by August we were married. Please note that in the six months before we were married we had not one issue, I think our biggest disagreement was over football teams. I never had to worry about dinner, a clean house, laundry and so on... he showerd me with gifts on a weekly basis..... I guess I was blinded by the attention... Anyway.... In this time his kids also started comming around which was fine, again always about family I pushed him to have a relationship with his kids if they were willing (little did I know the whole story). Well then we got married and here we are today. I am now being accused of not being an adult about this because I changed the locks and because I am not crying in front of him. I was told I have no emotion. Well just cause I am not crying in front of him does not mean that I am not heart broken. I have shed lots of tears over the last couple weeks, but I will no longer do it infont of him, why you ask....well he has made no effort to fix this, he chose the side of his kids (in his mind they have done nothing wrong) and he moved out willingly. If in fact he did love me and wanted all the BS that he said to win me over then he would still be here today and he would have stood up for me. My only fault was allowing this relationship to move to fast and not realizing what he was doing. I I have picked myself up and dusted myself off. He has tried calling me several times today after he moved the remainder of his stuff and I refuse to answer the phone. I have set up an appointment with my attorney and will begin the research of the divorce process. My kids and my home will be my only concern from here forward. My problems have been relatively minor so far. Demo started last Monday. On the first day, the power went off in my neighborhood for two hours. Not my GC's fault. This was, however, an omen. I had told the GC that I wanted the wall oven lower because I'm short, and he said he'd keep it at the same height as the current one. But, in fact, he raised it 6 inches. That one I caught in the framing stage, so he's fixing it. I think he forgot. Then he asked me as he was heading out to buy lights, did I want black or white UC lights. He recommended white, I'm not good with quick decisions (why I read GW for months) and said OK. Before I could tell him I really thought I'd rather have black, the white was installed (it was the same day - at least he's quick). That wasn't really his fault - I should have asked for time to decide. But we did discuss where to place the recessed lights, since the joist ran right where they should go, so they could be too close or too far from the cabinets, and I'm quite sure we had decided on too far, but he installed them, instead, too close. If this was due to a decision on his part, shouldn't he have mentioned it to me? I think he forgot again, and it was the same day. But I didn't notice until the ceiling drywall was done, so too late! The most recent thing is not really his fault, except indirectly. I'm donating the cabs and metal stuff to Habitat for Humanity Restore. They said they would be selling the oven for scrap, which was a shame, but at least it wasn't going to the landfill. When the GC demo'd, he put the oven in the driveway instead of the garage with the rest, and I reminded him that it was being donated (I'm seeing a pattern of forgetting here). I knew it was very heavy, so I told him that it was OK to leave it there - it was up by the garage, behind the dumpster, not easily visible from the street, and it didn't matter if it was rained on, but I told him to be sure not to put it in the dumpster. That was last week. Habitat comes tomorrow. Today, while my teenage daughter was home alone, a man and woman in a pickup truck came up the driveway with a dolley and took the oven, wheeling it between the dumpster and our Buick Rendezvous. My DD called my DH, who doesn't ever listen to me when I tell him what is going on, and he told her it was OK if someone could use it. She was afraid to go out and say anything to these people anyway - she's only 13. So my beloved oven was stolen by scrappers. I understand if something is at the curb, it's fair game, but no one should walk up your driveway and spend 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get an double oven into their pickup truck. I'm really PO'd. So it's been only 7 days of remodel, and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next. From now on, every piddling thing is going to be in writing. Still, my stories are nowhere near as bad as all of yours. Clearly, no amount of planning - or wine - is ever enough.

Hang in there, Kelly! Sure it will be hard in many and varied ways. This board is a wealth of knowledge, ask your questions here! It sounds like the build and his time away will be done at about the same time, two huge things to look forward to!!

I would suggest you pick out the major items before he leaves. Also I will throw this idea out. Is it possible for him to work weekends and come home say two days during the week? The reason I say this as many of the supply places, subs, GC, ect. are closed are hard to get ahold of on the weekends. Many flooring, lighting, plumbing supply places ect. only are open half a day Saturday, or closed completely on the weekends. If he is going to have to come home, make selections, or talk to subs, or GC, it may be easier during the week, if he could work weekends on his job. I think we have about a month and a half on our build. Good luck.

CB - I wish he could do that but no he is not able to come that often. He is going to be in Idaho or Utah and they work M-F and some weekends. He is allowed a fly home one weekend every 4 weeks. He can of course fly home every weekend if he wanted but that would be expensive.

The good thing is we have all of the plumbing fixtures picked out. Most of the light fixtures and he trusts me with the rest (most are closets, how easy is that!)We THINK we have the tile floor narrowed down, this is proving to be the biggest pain. The paint was so easy for me and now the floor is just giving me a pain in the......

Then we have the carpet to pick out. DH will be flying home DD's birthday weekend no matter way so I think we will try to get what we do not get taken care of before he leaves that weekend. I really am surprised at all the things going on in my life right now with the house that I am not checking myself in somewhere! LOL! My mom has Alzheimer's and I am trying to find an assisted living place for her and all the paper work is insane, I know I have a problem with saying no, so far I am the co-room parent to DD's class, the soccer team parent, in charge of the 2nd ask the moms who can come in and cut paper all day....GESH! I told myself I was not going to do this and when people ask I just can't say NO!!! AHHH! LOL! I am rambling on...see. I have to go and check on the house, pick out an outfit for a job interview tomorrow and then eat.
