No Internet and no email is the same problem...so at least there is only one thing to fix. When your hard drive failed, did they replace it or what? Maybe you need to do a re-install of your router software, or fix some settings in the router interface. My advice would be to reinstall any router software, and then, if you're still having a problem, contact your Internet provider and have them walk you through the troubleshooting. Also, while you may not want to take your laptop back in, why not at lesst give the repair place a call and see what they think might be the issue? Good luck, and re-post here with further developments...

Not sure I understand why someone would repair/replace the hard drive without making sure before returning the laptop that the internet connectivity was working. Can you connect the laptop by wire to the modem/router? If yes...does that connection work? Can you open the Device Manager and see if any components are shown as malfunctioning? If the hard drive was replaced...how was the operating system reinstalled? Using the original discs? From a backup?

Just curious. Did you set up your account with your internet provider again after the computer was returned to you? Sometimes the silliest things slip our minds.

Hi everyone - Ok I had to check my internet provider again Optimum Online, changed the wires and reinsert the cd - I now have the internet /email again. the only thing different is there is one plug that is not plugged in. which is the wire that went from the router to the pc. but now I'm going from the modem to the pc. Everything seems to be working find (just wondering nothing is connected to the router now). whatauthink? I know this was connected before. This is a wireless and connected to another laptap in another room - I wonder if this will effect the connection - Ok will check it tomorrow.

you want to go through the router rather than the modem if at all possible because the router provides you added protection of the built in hardware firewall. I suspect you will need to go into your router and adjust the settings for your laptop to allow it, put in the mac address, etc. Your router should have directions on how to do that or you can usually look up that info on the router manufacturer site using the model number.

Greetings everyone -Ok I'm on had to use the cd rom for all /router.modem.& online provider - hook up to the modem then the router like you mentione (ravencajun) all is good now - EXCEPT I SEEM TO HAVE KNOCKED OUT ALL THE FILES AND EVEN THE DESKTOP LOOK ON THE OTHER LAPTOP IN ANOTHER ROOM.
really need help internet is out & that pc is used for business. HELP

So is the other laptop booting up but you see nothing or exactly what is happening?

I would try to unplug that laptop from everything, replug and reboot it a couple of times to see if it regains it's settings.

I can not imagine how you doing something on one laptop could have affected the drive contents on another laptop, all it could do is somehow make it not be seen by your router possibly but that would not affect you being able to boot up and view the contents of the laptop.

please try to give some detailed info on exactly what is happening after you try what I mentioned.
You might try safe mode for last known good configuration also if you can boot to safe mode.

Greetings: Ok seems like whatever I did to get my pc back - affected my wife's laptop - she lost all here files including all that was on her desktop - We got back the internet /email & just now recovered all the files on back up /now we are trying to restore them, but not getting anywhere - keeps saying the files we check are not useable and also to erase them??? certainly don't want to lose them again - What is the correct wasy to restore the lost files - noting seems to work.

Hi everyone - Ok had it looked over by another repair shop & everything is fine w/both pc's - they restored the lost files (didn't tell us how it was done) but all is ok now - thanks to all of you for the quick replys and info - that was real great. I will stay on this web-site for sure. One more question I am going to us a flash drive to store all files - how is this done?
After you plug in the flash drive - do you highlight the files /folders etc. and SAVE TO - or SEND TO new drive? Trying it now But it's not working, so maybe I'm missing a step.

Bill, I copy and paste the files from the flash drive. Hope that works for you.

Bill the very best way to back up your pc is to make an image of the entire drive that way you have the operating system as well as all your files backed up, you an use an imaging program like Acronis true image or a free one like drive image. You can back those up to a flash drive, a usb hard drive, dvd etc.

If you choose to only back up your files then you would put your flash drive in the usb slot, go to my documents for example (right click on start then in the tree go to my documents) and right click on the folder and from the menu select send to, there you will select the appropriate name that has been designated for your flash drive. You can do all your files that way. Once you are done you must remember to click on the safely remove icon in the systray by the clock and select your flash drive from the list and wait till it says it is safe to remove the device.

opps meant right click on start, then explore, then in the tree go to My documents and right click on that folder.

also if you do not know what your flash drive has been named you can go to my computer click on that and it will show you all the drives and the names of them.

Hi Guys: Ok tried exacatly what you mentioned with the flash dirve / my computer & used USB(E)just for files. everything works the only thing I didn't do /I guess I can go back & redo was (Once you are done you must remember to click on the safely remove icon in the systray by the clock and select your flash drive from the list and wait till it says it is safe to remove the device. I'll try it a few times to get the exact files I want to keep.

Bill you should always use the safely remove icon any time you plug anything into your usb ports, if not it can cause corruptions on the flash drive and on the pc.
