We asked do you have any version of Microsoft office on that computer now??? you can also try downloading open office from here OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 click where it says download now a new page opens and a pop up box with the actual download will come up for you to save to your pc. but I think maybe the easiest way for you might be to just use an online conversion tool like this no need to install any programs just do it online DOCX Convert Office 2007 or this Zamzar.com - Free online file conversion zamzar is my fave. or you can now use Google docs to open them Google Docs

you can do that very simply by going to zamzar which will allow you to choose from a list of file types to convert to. Here is a link that might be useful: zamzar

open office does work fine, I just open the 2003 doc then copy the content, open a 2007 docx, then paste. I suggest this for anyone having this problem. It takes over an hour to install open office, I guess a lot of people need it right now.

I was tempted to try and help on this one, and now I'm glad I did not. It would've been interesting to actually see an example of what the problem looked like, or know which functions of the "recovery" disk were used to correct it. What we've learned at the end is simply that the problem went away about as easily as an aspirin cures a headache. I suspect that the problem was PEBKAC all along, and no information has been provided to suggest otherwise.
