How to move burners on a Bluestar Range

We are expecting delivery of a 36" Bluestar range next week. We would like to move the 22k burners to the middle section of the range (middle front, middle back). The range comes default with the burners on the front left and front right, which happen to be the worst place for the hoodÂs capture area (a 24" deep, 42" wide pyramid hood).

We intend on cooking lots of stir fry, blackening fish, and searing steaks.

Someone posted several months ago (~6 months) about how to move the burners using hand tools and some ingenuity. I did a search for the posting but could not find it Â does anyone know who made the posting or where I could find that information?

I would have paid Bluestar to move them in the factory but I read somewhere that it was ~$250 per burner to move, which is a ridiculous sum of money for an hourÂs worth of work.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on moving the burners or advice on the matter?

The $250 charge for "burner configuration" is for the total burner moving job at the factory. Whoever told you that it cost $250 per burner is uninformed. Although it is after the fact, you might want to check with other dealers in your area to verify this and let your dealer know about the inconvenience of having to handle it on your own, to say nothing of possibly voiding the warranty .

I'd also think about how you are going to use them. For me, having them up split means that I can put two, 12" diameter (or larger) pots on the "boil gallons of water" burners at the same time. With the burner on the center back, I can comfortably put on three big pots on high output burners. Having them up front is where I want high output for saute/stir-fry. Having them up front also means that I'm less likely to scorch the riser and/or backsplash, depending on your configuration.

I would not be surprised if moving burners by anyone other than BlueStar or their authorized agents is considered "unauthorized modification" as far as their warranty goes. If it is done by anyone other than a certified gas fitter/technician, you may also have some fancy talking involved if you ever have a fire and try to make an insurance claim if the range is, in any way, related to the cause or the spread of the fire.

One-quarter-inch thick hardwood plywood can be spread out for sliding heavy appliances to cabinet adjacency, and then front-to-back strips of the plywood aligned with the "feet" of the appliance can be used for final sliding into place. Then, either jack up one side after another and remove the strips, or keep them in place if the floor is soft (cherry, pine, etc.). For supporting significant weight on small feet over soft wood, the hardwood plywood can be augmented by stainless steel or aluminum strips to help spread the weight over more of the hardwood plywood and hence more of the underlying soft flooring. My 48-inch SZ refrigerator/freezer uses that approach over a cherry floor. This does raise the appliance slightly, so that may be a factor in deciding whether to keep the strips in place after appliance placement.

Propane is heavier than air -- natural gas is lighter than air. In order for the propane burner to light with an electric igniter, the propane must be pushed up to the spark by the pressure of gas behind it in the venturi tube (since it doesn't rise naturally in air). If the tip of the igniter wire is not at the very lowest opening in the burner, the propane spills out of any lower holes before it gets to the igniter. The Bluestar igniter electrode tips have historically been optimized for natural gas in that they sit at the level of about the third hole up in the column of holes in front of the igniter. For natural gas, this insures that the burner is filled with enough gas before ignition occurs. For propane, this results in delayed or, potentially, faulty ignition if the burner is not exactly level. I came up with a simple and reversible modification for Bluestar propane burners that works really well. After the mod, the burners in my RCS range light reliably within four clicks on cold startup and one click if the burner is already filled with gas. The modification: Replace the screw that mounts the igniter to the underside of the burner with a 6-32 3/8" long stainless steel pan head machine screw (the original one is the same but only 1/4" long). Put a 1/8" thick spacer between the bottom of the burner and the igniter mounting flange in order to lower the igniter by 1/8". I used a #8 stainless steel nut but you could also use stainless steel washers to add up to 1/8". When tightening the screw, make sure that the tip of the electrode wire is directly in front of the lowest burner hole. I think that the currently shipping ranges now have igniters that have longer electrode wires that can potentially be bent downward to the lowest hole using a couple of needle nose pliers (to prevent breaking the ceramic insulator). This might also work to solve the propane ignition problem (I have a one year old RCS with the shorter electrode wires).

48" or 60" is huge. That requires careful kitchen design to make the space usable, and it makes venting extremely challenging and very expensive. I hope you are fully aware of that. That's going to be one crazy vent hood and a huge-ass make-up-air system. As for burner configuration, I agree that pretty much the only time that it makes sense to buy such a large rangetop is when you add a griddle. But for a griddle you don't want 22kBTU burners. It takes a good while to preheat and even out the temperature, but then the griddle doesn't need all that much power to stay at the set temperature. I suggest you get the RNB and not the Platinum. That way you can have a thermostatically-controlled griddle. And in your case, you'd probably pick a 24" model. That would give you a combined 30kBTU for the entire griddle surface, which sounds about appropriate and functional. That still leaves you with 36" inches of burners for regular cooking. That's plenty for pretty much all needs. And if it isn't, you can use the griddle as another "French Top" burner (yes, I know, it's not the same; but you get the idea). With a thermostatic control, it'll be great for simmering. You really don't want the 22kBTU burners in the back. This amount of power is useful for high-heat frying and wok cooking. It is something that you can't leave unattended. You need it on the front, so that you can quickly reach for it. The back is fine at 15kBTU, or if you absolutely wanted to you could upgrade to 18kBTU. It'll not make much of a practical difference either way. With the griddle installed, I could see getting rid of the simmer burner. Even the 22kBTU burners have great simmer capability if properly adjusted at time of installation. They don't go down quite as much as the simmer burner, but I never missed the dedicated simmer burner, which we replaced with another 15kBTU burner. Also, I could see replacing the front 15kBTU burner with another 22kBTU. Not so much because you really need that power, but because it is nice if the power output is symmetric. Make cooking with multiple chefs easier. I don't know which configurations Bluestar allows you do order these days. Their website isn't particularly helpful. But a good dealer would be able to either navigate that issue or change burner heads and orifices at time of installation. And, to be honest, I think their default configuration for the 60" rangetop with 24" griddle is actually really well-designed. I don't think you'd regret ordering it as is.

I have moved mine around with no problems. You just swap the burners and the orifices. Then adjust the shutters and low flame adjustment screw. A deep socket and ratchet will make moving the orifices easer. A screwdriver with the correct blade for the low-flame adjust screw will save the screw. It is a very simple procedure as long as you do not screw up reinstalling the orifice. It needs to be tight enough to not leak but not so tight that you strip the threads. This is kind of standard procedure for taking things apart and putting them back together.

Remember you are playing with gas and you do have the potential of messing up your stove. If you are not intimidated by this procedure and want more detail let me know. I'll be off the net until Monday, but if you are impatient I'm sure someone else can help with details.

Yes it can be done, but as noted above you will have no warranty from day 1. No entitlement free white glove install.
I guess the questions is which do you want.

Is it possible to have the burners moved by someone who is authorized to move the burners (following delivery)?

I just don't understand why you would want the two biggest burners that you will most certainly be using for blackening/searing or other smoky applications to be at the front sides of the range.

As for having a fire related to the moving of a burner on a range -- I have read my homeowner's policy and not sure that user-modifications to appliances is a policy exclusion for fire damage. I suppose I could double-check that.

It might be cheaper to bump your hood forward. I think Trevor even recommends that. Push it out 3 inches and you're good to go!

I have a 24" deep wall hood, already purchased in the basement waiting to get installed... definitely can't bump it out more.
