Firefox won't work after awhile

I like to use firefox but after I use it for awhile it just stops my connecting to anything. I switch over to Chrome & it works fine.I have an older Acer desktop running Vista.I suppose the obvious solution is to ditch firefox & just use Chrome but I just like the look of firefox & change is hard at my age.
I'm wondering if some sort of malware could cause this?

What versions do you have? Have you tried using FF with your add-ons disabled?

damecoy,I have firefox version 24.No,I haven't tried disabling add-ons. I like,need the add-ons. No squint &add block.If I disable can I turn them on again?I know this is a duh moment but I'm getting old.

Oooh ooh, good stuff randyj14, knew about bus. cards for chain saw gapping, like the b'day card idea, saves trying to handle two bus. cards. And the domed washer tip is good, though I did make note of it. Sorry for the delay in getting back to everyone, car probs. the last few weeks, and had to take the mower to show someone to know where to tap the flywheel to free it after taking off the starting nut on top that fits into the starter assembly. Once that was settled proceded with the dismantling. Will be placing an order with mfg supply in a couple of weeks and will include the points and condensor. Back to everyone then. Couple of questions, the points assembly, tried to put it back on, after removing it, the thing with the little spring, couldn't get it on, was trying to use a pointy screwdriver(just a point no blade, name excapes me) to lever on the spring, no luck, by the time I had finished the wire had detached from the cyl. thing it was soldered to. Any tips, won't be good to do the same thing with the new points? Also there looked to be a post that hit the points assembley, however when I rotated the blade(ign. wire removed from plug and tucked away safely:-)) and it did not push against the points arm/assembly. Should it have, what is up there? Thank you in advance for your advice.

Exactly. The blower failed because of the combination of a poor design and a manufacturing defect. Since I didn't use it very much (mainly a couple days in the fall to pick up leaves) by the time it failed the warranty was expired. Any company with ethics would have sent me a replacement blower that was known to be free from defects. But they were probably upset that I told them exactly what the problem was and didn't take it to a dealer who would have snowballed me into thinking that I'd not followed "proper procedure" and somehow damaged the carburetor. Yeah the Stihl cost me quite a bit more than the Poulan but I was so mad I didn't care. It has performed flawlessly and never let me down. My yard always seems to end up with most of the leaves from the huge old oak trees and maple trees on several neighbors' properties. It's just not practical to rake up all those leaves by hand. Plus the blower grinds up the leaves a bit so I use 1/3 the leaf bags I would have used if I'd raked them by hand.

Susie, I have searched & can't find any Avast on it. I also went into the folders. I just did a search on this one & there is quite a bit Norton leftover on it still. AVG is on too & was working when I stopped using this one. I hope to have another one Monday if everyone would just get well..I don't drive (never learned) & all my rides are truly sick. Cat, I think I will try the XP tonite. I do know it has a LOT of problems & need to be started over..it is not worth spending $150 to do that. Nite before last I was trying to fill out a form to order something.. it took over 30 minutes to do it.. The cursor kept freezing plus it wouldn't scroll without freezing. Some on here can vouch for all the problems I have had. If I can get it running I can at least check to see if there is anything else I want saved. I tried to keep things saved as I knew this day was coming. Yes I know now the APC is probably why it wouldn't turn on but I don't think that had anything to do with the other problems. The XP took about 20 minutes to reboot.. this 98 is very fast doing it. Thanks, Dar

had you gone to windows updates and got the multitude of updates you would need after using recovery material to re install windows? If not that is probably what happened it started trying to download and install all those many updates and it locked it up. You may have even needed service pack 2 and 3 with a unit that old. plus of course all your antivirus programs etc would be trying to update also. It is always best when doing that kind of recovery where you will be very very far behind in windows updates to turn off automatic updates and go manually to windows update and first get your service packs in order and be absolutely sure to reboot the computer after each service pack, then get any remaining updates. I usually suggest getting them in small batches and creating a restore point before each service pack and before each batch of updates. Should something go wrong you have a good restore point to return to.

Click on Help. On the appearing drop down menu will be the option to disable. Go ahead and try it. When you are done testing close FF. When you reopen it all will be back to normal.

If the concern has continued with the add-ons disabled they are removed from being a potential cause.

Damccoy,Firefox didn't go back to normal after I disabled & reopened. It said I needed to update which I attempted to do. Got a bunch of notices to update other stuff. Page is hung up now with Java saying critical update needed. I didn't have Java.
I was going to uninstall FF but can't do that because it needs to be closed in order to uninstall & page is hung on the Java thing. My security warned that something being offered (not Java) was phishing scam & I got rid of that.
I guess my question now is how to uninstall firefox?

I am at a bit of a loss as to why you and the other poster are having this concern. It's automatic and has been that way for a while. I'm wondering about the add-ons.

Take a look on the Control Panel's Programs and Features to see if you have a Java entry. Just in case.

Updating the "other stuff"? Look and see what version of FF you have now. Historically following a FF upgrade the new version will do a check for add-on compatability.

You can reboot your system and begin anew with your quest.

Thank you DA.Yes,it seems Marita & I have the same problem.I have FF 16 now & the notice said critical to upgrade to the next level.What I really need to know is how to get rid of the Java "critical" upgrade notice.It is on there & I can't use FF at all.I can't move at all on FF.Google Chrome works OK,thankfully.
I could go ahead & do the Java upgrade but I don't trust anything that is so persistant.

16? Is that accurate?

Do you know how to locate your Startup? From what you report there should be an entry something in the line of Java Scheduler or Java Update. When located you would uncheck that entry>Apply>OK>reboot the system. That should take care of the Java update notice.

Hi Dc,I did not have Java on my computer. I got rid of that notice.Just simply hit Esc & went from there. I tend to make things harder than they actually are.I uninstalled firefox.I'm not sure if I will put it on again.I see there is a safe link on here to get it.Once before when I had some trouble I solved it by uninstalling FF & then reinstalling it.
LOL Yes,I know where Startup is.I'm not as dumb as I might seem in my posts.

DC I took no offense at your asking me if I knew where the Start button is. I should not have used the word"dumb".I meant computer challenged.It is just that since having a mild stroke I get confused easily & have a harder time following instructions.
Change is hard for me.After using Firefox for 8 years,switching to something that looks so different is daunting.But I will find my way around on Chrome.It looks better today than yesterday.
