Marvel and U-line undercounter fridges, any likes or dislikes?

Does anyone have a first-hand experience with either of these brands?

I am still deciding on an undercounter refrigerator. There are two spots where it can go on our layout. One location would require a 24" model (looking at U-line Echelon door model), but the other would fit a 30" model (so looking at Marvel drawers because their door model has a freezer with manual defrost which is something I don't want).

The reason I am concentrating on these two brands is they are a bit shallower than the others and would work with inset cabinets. Subzero would also work but it is over our budget.

We have a U Line Echelon ust installed a month or so ago. So far we're quite happy. It looks good, with a custom panel surrounding the glass portion of the door. The capacity is good, with two racks for wine bottles and three shelves for cans etc. Runs relatively quietly--for perspective, louder than our Therm columns, which are incredibly quiet, but about the same as the Miele Excella DWs when they run. Dislikes: the plastic inside is not the most luxurious stuff I've seen, metal would have been nice but that's why it was less than the SZ I presume. Overall a good choice for us to date.

BTW: one of the biggest reasons we chose it was an earlier GW post on customer service. Definitely read this thread, it's near inspirational!

I have no experience with U-Line, but we had a Marvel fridge in the lab at work that was trouble free for the ten years I worked in the area, and it wasn't new when I got there.

They would be 24" not 25 or some at 15". You could do door or draws and there are lots to choose from, Perlick, GE, Sub Zero, Viking, U-Line, Marvel and Summit to name a few, there's more.

amphibious, I'll guess you mean 2 appliances, both under the counter: "... about 6.5 cubic feet of fridge space and 2.5 cubic feet of freezer space, which means two units. What I had envisioned before I started doing research is one sole refrigeration unit and one fridge/freezer. Little did I know that the fridge/freezer units would be so hard to come by..." The more motors, different cooling circuits and separator walls you try to cram into a small space, the less space you have left over to call fridge or freezer. I got a 36" unit, for that reason. More real space left over, after the insulation and mechanical stuff. Your perceived space needs are actually in a range, quite elastic. Go for a fridge unit and a freezer unit.

Having suffered through a series of U-Line under-counter refrigerators a few years back, I can tell you I wouldn't touch any of their products again with a barge pole. Shoddy construction and quality control, customer service is non-existent and they won't stand behind their products. Even my local appliance repairman, who was their authorized service technician in the area, gave up on them. Always long delays in getting parts, and apparently very slow to pay for warranty work. He no longer works on U-Line. While it's possible they've gotten their act together in the intervening years, the damage has already been done! I'd never, ever take a chance on them again, and I always steer people away from them.

I have the Marvel 6BAR beverage center under my island. It has 2 shelves for wine and the rest for other beverages.

I am very happy with it. We have the glass door with a wood trim to match my island- no freezer.

The only issue is that the door will "bounce" back open if you slam it too hard. We found it open an inch or two a few times in the beginning. Now that we know how to close it, no problems!
