comcast recommending IE7 upgrade

Hi,

I received a notice when logging on this a.m. that Comcast is recommending the IE 7 upgrade, stating I won't have access to many features unless I do the upgrade. My, my......... can they do this ???

Comcast is advertising many things but I'll probably leave well enough alone for now. It is your choice to go for IE7 but I understand that many who chose IE7 wanted to go back to IE6. Comcast offers McAfee Security Suite without cost but I'm content with such free stuff as Zonealarm and AVG, along with Spybot, AdAware, and some others that have kept me free from bad guys so far. I do not normally use IE but choose to use the Firefox browser. It will do just about anything I need. Occasionally I must use IE because the websites that I sometimes visit require IE, but it's IE6 that I'm using.

If your computer is running XP, why do you not want IE7? It's not really very different to use and IE6 is probably not supported by anyone anymore, so updates, etc., for IE6 have stopped. It's probably some security issue with Comcast and IE7 is supposedly more secure.

Just wondering why you don't want it?

Rita" How untrue that statement is, as much as and as well as the MSWin IE/XP FUD works (you bought the FUD after all, eh), it just ain't so....And if you do it right, and use the right software package to do it, removing BOTH OutLook and IE is a simple and very effective way of making your PC faster, stabler, and w/o IE-OL, more secure too..... And it'll have a smaller footprint and memory requirements, and can be set up as you, not Steve Ballmer, wants it to be. Or you can do the delete "manually" too, but it's (to me anyway) a royal pain in the arse....Instructions for doing it right are in abundance.... I ran "it" for on my last (well, it was really the S.O.'s PC, but I grew weary of having to fix something every, well very often.) MSWin PC, and installed it for a friends daughter (and installed the software that she PURCHASED not stole) on a fPC just a few weeks ago. If all you really want is the functionality, then you pretty much already have it. Your TV should have audio-out jacks (look at the back or check the manual for the TV). If it does, you should be able to plug it into the back of your receiver in any pair of jacks labeled "AUX" or "TAPE" or such (any "high-level" input). The iPod doesn't need to be all that different: you either can get a cable that goes from the iPod to another set of AUX or TAPE jacks on the JVC or you can buy a fairly inexpensive dock (or use the one that came with your iPod, depending on the model) and plug that in. The dock will have the benefit of charging your iPod while it's playing. The one "gotcha" here is that you may not have enough high-level jacks on the receiver to plug in all this stuff. If that's the case, then you could look for a device which would let you plug in everything and then choose which one to listen to. But, at that point, considering the age of your JVC, you'd be better off replacing it. In that price range, you can get some decent surround-sound receivers. There still are some two-channel receivers out there, but they typically don't cost a lot less than surround sound and, if that's something you think is in your future, it won't hurt to buy one now. Brands in your price range which I would recommend are Onkyo, Denon, Harman-Kardon, and Yamaha. Panasonic also made a good surround-sound receiver that was surprisingly cheap for the sound quality, but I believe they've discontinued that line. Don't bother with a 7.1 receiver. I'd shoot for 6.1 or even 5.1 (harder to find because it's an older standard). There just isn't that much content that requires 6.1 or 7.1 to justify spending extra for it (IMHO). Some receivers within your price range bill themselves as satellite-radio ready or iPod-ready, so look for those features if you want them. Good luck!

Verizon bundle is no big deal. They are bundled with Direct TV. When I called it was just the basic and I can tell you that was not much. We went ahead and got the phone and DSL with them. It runs around $100.00. Love the free long distance since all 3 kids are long distance. We went with Direct Tv for our tv watching. They run great deals all the time. We got free HD tv for life, 2 DVR'S for life and more channels then we could ever want to watch. It is costing us $44.95 a month for 2 years. Plus we get $100.00 for our son recommending it to us. Plus he gets the $100.00 off. They take off $10.00 a month for 10 months. You can refer 10 people and get as much as $1000.00. Our bill now for all 3 runs around $150.00. We just left Comcast and hated it, too. We were paying $64.00 a month and we weren't getting much. They are trying to compete with Direct and Dish and sent us a DVR box but the kicker was they were going to charge us $17.00 a month for the crazy box. That would have been $81.00 a month for nothing extra. Plus the Tv was going out everytime you turned around. Most people around here have dropped Comcast..

Why don't you provide some proof of it, if you think it's true. Just stating something doesn't make it true. . @ wolfie46 "Is there any problem running AVG and malwarebytes at the same time on a computer with windows 8.1?" Shouldn't be any problem. Although it would probably be a good idea not to run scans by each, at the same time.

I prefer IE 6 because it doesn't seem to be as locked down as 7 and I'm not onboard with tabbed browsing. It is still available for download at Microsoft along with the updates.

I have updated with firefox ; may I now delete the Firefox set up for 1.0 7 exe.from my desktop? I have the Firefox set up for 2- 1.007 icon there. Am I clear here ?

Yes, any time you install a newer version of ANYTHING you will probably want to delete the older version setups. No reason to keep them around unless you think you might like to go back to an older version.

I resisted IE7 for some time, but finally relented. I use it only for MS Update and for those few sites that require it, there are still a few out there. Otherwise I use my default browser Firefox.

As for removing the old versions, it seems to me that the updates of Firefox have always "overwritten" the previous version...and the desktop is updated too. If you have an Icon pointing to something that has been removed, by all means, delete it, as was well put by grandms.
