RegCure for Windows XP

Has anybody used this? Is it worth $30. I was looking to get it b/c my system restore for Windows xp has stopped working and so has my photo sharing. ?? Do you think this will repair the problem.. or is there another, better program I should look into. Anything you can tell me about this is appreciated.

There is an excellent registry cleaner called RegSeeker and it is totally free. However caution should be used when cleaning your registry. XP is far more tolerant than any other windows before so cleaning is not so important.

Either program will not repair a problem, they simply look for orphaned entries. Then you need to decide if you want them deleted.

Why do you feel the need to restore to an earlier time? What program are you using for the photo sharing?

Also can you tell us exactly what occurs when you attempt a system restore, what message and or error do you get if any? Sometimes system restore files can become corrupt, or system restore could be disable, or a virus can cause it not to work.. tell us if your get a error.

owbist is right cleaning the registry is not so important in xp and really should be avoided it may cause more issues then it resolves.

I sometimes speak up concerning others' suggestions that seem like Chicken Little-type fear mongering. I also think too many people have too many unsupported fears of unlikely risks on the internet and from PC use in general. I'm generally in agreement with Kudzu's comments, but let's be realistic - no one knows what the evil doers will do. Using an XP PC on a network that's unconnected to the internet - I'd say zero risk. Use it in full confidence until the hardware dies. Using an XP PC on the internet? Time will tell. Having capable firewalls, updated security software, etc., is a must for all PCs with all operating systems anyway. I have an XP PC that I use very occasionally that has all the protection reasonably available. I'll be sure to remove any personal info and will use it carefully. If I see any hint of odd activity, I'll just replace it. For most PCs old enough to have XP, spending good money to put a newer Windows on old hardware seems a poor choice to me.

Support has been, or will be dropped for all versions of XP except for service pack 3. However, XP remains my favorite windows version. My wife moved to Vista on her laptop and hated it. She now has Windows 7 and says it is an improvement over Vista. Some day, I plan to move to Windows 7 and skip Vista. This requires a complete clean out of the system - reformat of the disk. I dread that move, and expect some applications and hardware will no longer be compatible. If certain applications become incompatible, I'll resist the move as long as I can. These would be applications that are too expensive for me as a retiree to replace. I have an old finite element analysis program that is no longer compatible. To buy a new version is $16,000 the last time I priced it, so that will not be done unless I land a consulting job that needs it and can pay for it - not likely in my remaining life. If you are having difficulty in finding your pictures, use the "Find" command to search your hard drive. If your disk has been subdivided into logical drives, you may have to search each logical drive. The find comamnd does not need the entire name of the file to find it, just part of the name will do. It will, of course, list all files matching the same fragment. For example, if you searched for all occurences of *.jpg, you'll get every file having extension " jpg", not necessarily an efficent thing to do. Suppose you have the followiong files: 1998 Joey 1.tif 1998 Joey 2.jpg 2000 Joey 1.doc You could locate all these files by searching on "joey" and very likely would not get many extraenous hits. File names that contined the string, joey, would also appear such as jumpjoey.tif . Recommendation: In the future, create folders with meaningful names in which to store your images. That way, you'll know where they are. Folder names such as: Vacation Jun 2000 Year 2001 pic Year 2002 pic 110Canon 111Canon are examples. Tip: Its a good idea when you set up a new computer to set aside a data drive for documnets and images. If you have one hard drive, a logical drive could be created on it. You would have 2 logical drives: one for the system files and the other for your personal files. I have 2 physical hard drives in my computer which becomes a natural thing to do. This separates your data from the system and application disk, and makes for more efficient use fo the "Find" command. On first pass, you need to search only the data drive, and if not found there, search the other drives. System and application files are humungous these days and requires much needless search time.

I don't think she was considering upgrading her current pc to a newer version of windows but updating by getting a new pc with a newer OS. I would not recommend trying to put one of the newer versions of windows on a very old pc it would have to be checked for compatibility before hand and likely would have a lot of things that would need to be changed and updated if it would work at all. Old updates that may be specific to XP and probably earlier versions.. unless the same packages are also used in newer vista or 7 wont be available for download from microsofts normal servers. I've already hit that wall with something for someone. Found the official Microsoft download page for an item with complete detail and other info but would not download .. pushing download redirects to a page with some text about no longer supported. Most anti-virus companies have stated they will continue supporting XP with their softwares for the near future, if not longer. Last report I saw was something around 30% of world pc's are still XP.. 10% business. Microsoft is selling extended support to business for XP and earning millions, and also to China where 50% of the PC's are XP. Try doing system restore in safe mode and if it works that way.

I'm trying to restore cuz.. first... my computer will absolutely not open photos in email anymore, I have NO sound in my speakers, and I "lost" some photos that were stored in my computer... :o( (I had my photos from a Kodak program, but can't remember what the program was that I used to put photos on a disc..b/c my computer would always automatically bring it up)

I thought that system restore would help.. specially after I lost the "sound" .. then figured out that my windows xp restore refuses to work..

what kind of antivirus and sypware protection do you have on your pc and is is fully updated and have you run scans.

The things you describe can occur from some types of infections. Lets run some free scans and make sure you are clean.
Get superantispyware free and install, udate, run full scan let it clean what it finds.

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
* Shutdown/restart the computer.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

I really do not like the use of registry cleaners, if not done properly they can cause serious damage. Therefore I can not suggest their use to anyone other than a registry specialist.

The simplest way to find your photos would to be click Start, click Search and type in *.jpg and start your search. This will find all jpg photos. If you also have bitmap photos (.bmp) then search again using *.bmp

For the sound click Start, click Control panel, click Sounds and Audio devices and have a look around in there.
