Hello again...long time friend returns!

Hi everyone

After switching my primary activity from food to digital scrapbooking, I find I am ready to get back to some more cooking. I had thought of coming back to GW before but darn if I could recall my user name! Galloping old age I fear. Today it came back to me!

Now I have to search for a recipe. Shortbread flavored with black pepper, rosemary and Parmesan. We had some in NYC and I wished I would have bought the whole batch!

We are still traveling - a lot - and there has not been one day that I have regretted retiring! It's wonderful.

Well, it has been a tough month for me and my family. We would have celebrated Wayne's 68th birthday today. It has been quiet around here even with the shelties. All our kids are out of town or out of province and although I talk with them regularly, it is just not the same in this old house. I miss Wayne so much and still doesn't seem real at times. As you have expressed Terry, there is a large void where his large presense was and the absense of his voice is deafening. Even though I go through the motions of life every day, it still feels like I just want time to stand still! I am so grateful that I have such supportive people around me and my fellow garden webbers to communicate with. I look forward to the spring and I look forward to ending this chapter in this old house. In the meantime, I am keeping myself busy with my sewing and clearing out what is no longer needed here. Peggy,I have been unable to see the garden for a couple of weeks now thanks to all the white stuff we got but I have named my new peonies after each and every one of you on this forum. Guys are red and white ones! Ladies are pink! :) I have stored them in the garage in peat moss and sand. Hopefully everyone will survive the winter. Lynn, the dogs are definately keeping me busy and I have to do poop patrol now. :$ Good grief! Ingrid, I am planning on a trip out to see you when ever you are ready for company providing the roads are clear. I look forward to getting out in the country! Cindy, I'm so happy to have met you but sad for the circumstances. Thank you so very much for the casseroles. You are a great cook! OT- We Lost a Dear Friend Today

I just found this thread again. Reminded of the pain of losing our sweet Libby, we found ourselves having to say goodbye to another beloved pet just last week. Our precious Boo Boo Kitty made her way to Rainbow Bridge following a year of unexplained weight loss and finally a rare cancer diagnosis 6 months ago. She was a rescue kitty we welcomed to our home in the Fall of 1993. We don't know exactly how old she was when we got her but at least 6 months at the time. She must have been getting close to 17 years old when she passed. We love all our pets and they are each unique in personality and demeanor, but Boo was such a bright, intuitive, affectionate and totally mischievous little soul that there will never be another like her. Always demanding the center of attention, but in such an adorable fashion that no one could deny her. She was the best companion of my husband, who historically was never a pet lover. Yet his heart was won over within the first moments of her arrival to our home, when Boo immediately crawled onto his big chest, wrapped her paws around his neck and began purring her acceptance of her new family. From that moment they were inseparable and shared a lifelong bond of love and affection, mixed with mutual joy as they practiced the art of "play battle". Boo hiding and pouncing on my husband from all possible angles of attack until he would pin her in his arms, smothering her with hugs. As her battle with cancer caused her body to thin, tire more easily and struggle to control normal functions, she still remained our loving, affectionate, ever present companion who continued to insist on being the focus of our attention. She spent long evenings cuddled in our laps, telling us it was ok to just sit and enjoy our time together, the chores and schedules could wait...our time together was limited and thus more precious. We are so grateful to have had the honor and blessing of sharing our lives with our beautiful Boo. The pain of parting is so sharp and intense, we continue to see her in our minds eye around every corner, in her favorite sunny spots and waking us in the mornings with her soft paws upon our cheeks. As much as it hurts now, the years of shared love and memories make it all worthwhile. Someday we will cross that Rainbow Bridge, warmly greeted and surrounded by our precious companions who wait for us there now. Sorry, 3:30 in the morning here so I forgot to tell everyone what beautiful roses and fabulous pictures they have posted. Just gorgeous! Whomever is growing Pretty Jessica, give her a chance. I have had her (actually three of her) growing in my front yard for the past several years. She is on her own root and has to be one of my best roses that I grow. When I was deadheading her last week, I called her one of my old faithfuls. I probably have had her for 7 years in the same spot. Gets the brunt of the afternoon sun and still blooms. She is nice and upright and holds her flowers well. She only gets to be about 5 feet or so and is one of the most mannered of the DA roses. Bought her based upon recommendations from folks here on this site and have not been disappointed. I am so happy I got her and have kept her. She gets compliments all the time. Has a nice fragrance as well. Practically thornless too, which is a plus for a DA rose. No disease for me. I find that DA roses take at least three years to come into their own in my garden so I don't think you will be disappointed if you give her a chance to stay.

Bestyears, I was keeping it vague because discussing dog training methods can be equal to politics! Try telling some of the militant rescue groups that you will be using a different training method than the one they strictly follow ... you will never get a dog from them! Here are two articles from two opposite theories that gives you an idea of how they think. 1) https://positively.com/victorias-blog/balanced-dog-training-theres-nothing-balanced-about-it/ 2) https://www.nitrocanine.com/blog/2015/06/12/in-defense-of-balanced-training/ With my rescue I started out with a purely positive trainer. It worked great in the house and yard as the dog is very food motivated ... BUT outside none of the training made a difference. Critters and the chase were a much higher reward than anything I could offer. I even tried carrying filet mignon! I was being dragged around town by a crazy dog ... even with the easy-walk harness the positive trainer told me to buy. The dog just walked sideways and pushed into the harness. The last straw was when on a walk the dog nearly knocked me, and my father, to the ground when trying to get a squirrel. I had to kick the dog to stop her lunging and get us untangled (my Dad also had our smaller dog on leash). I looked for a different approach and found "balanced" training. The trainer I found is slightly different from #2 above in that they do use food rewards. Happy to message you a link to the training program website and the actual trainer I used. We now go on off leash hikes and I get stopped regularly by people who comment on her behavior and level of training. I got so many questions that I started carrying business cards for the trainer!! One of those people actually contacted and used my trainer, even thought she isn't local. Do your research and choose the trainer and method that best works for you and your dog. The best method will most likely be a combination of several different ones.

Since I started working on a family history scrapbook, I've occasionally browsed your blog and checked out the scrapbooking links, although I do it the old-fashioned way (paper) and don't plan to go digital.

Well, there I was saying hello and then forgetting to come back! I've been thinking of y'all and plan to take time to read the good recipes here every day. A woman cannot live by scrapping alone!

As soon as I find a recipe for that savory shortbread I'll be sure to post it. My latest project is finding some heart healthy food that Dick will still WANT to eat. He had a heart stent put in this week so while he is feeling great, I'm handling the diet and he's on his own for exercise. Life goes on!
