Center the picture on your screen.
Press "Print Screen"...which should be at the end of your F-keys, above you number keypad, or somewhere around there.
Then, open "Paint" and click "Paste".
Your screen should show up in the paint program.
Then go to 'File' and 'SaveAs'...and you should be able to save the image as the type you wish, and in the location you want.
You can use a photo program to crop the picture later.

Bring up a picture, press the 'Print screen' button (PRN SCRN maybe) next to your F12 button. Open your photo editing program and click either File or Edit (depending on the program) and click the Paste button. Now use the tools to remove the bits you do not need around the picture and save it.

In Irfanview it is Edit/Paste then drag mouse to cover the area you need, click Edit, click to remove outside the selected area and save.

There are free screen capture programs but for how often I do screen captures I am quite happy with this method rather than clutter my computer with yet another seldom used programs.

All versions of Vista except the "Basic" version have a "Snipping Tool", which allows you to capture any part of you screen and save it as a jpeg. It works much better than a screen capture.

Choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, Snipping Tool. If you don't see it there, it may not be activated. Go to Control Panel and open Program and Features (you may have to click Programs first). In the task pane on the left, click Turn Windows features on or off. If necessary, click Continue when prompted by User Account Control. Scroll through the list of features, check the box next to Tablet PC Optional Components, and click OK. Turning on these features gives you the Snipping Tool.

Thanks. I do know how to use the Snipping Tool and I also have a screen capture program. However, I wasn't sure whether this kind of approach would save the picture at the native resolution it has on the web site, or if there could be some degradation in the file size. I ask because I might want to manipulate or crop certain parts of the pictures and I would like to start with the highest resolution I can. Does anyone have any thoughts on this aspect?

I would suggest anything being saved from the net would not print up nicely at all. The reason is that file sizes for web based files need to be as small as possible so the page loads swiftly. As you are probably well aware we here at the Gardenweb computer forum have members on dialup, they need to be considered. The normal resolution for web based pics is 72 dpi (dots per inch) where printing needs a minimum of 96 and more is better.

This is why I always suggest taking photos at the highest resolution on a camera, we can always degrade but upgrading s not much of an option.

Remember, if time is not an issue you can always play a little. Save your pic, cut out the part/s you need and save at 150 or even 300 dpi. Now bring it up to 500% of the size in your photo editing program and use the clone tool to remove some of the jaggies if they are very apparent. Save the original with an added number or letter so you do not ruin your original of course and then play with the copy.

I don't know if it works with Vista, but I would certainly try FastStone Capture version 5.3. This is the fully featured freeware version before it went shareware.

The programme can capture any part of, or all of, the screen and edit the image with its own built in editor as well as saving the file in any format. If you save it as a .bmp then you will have a fair chance of resizing and editing the image providing the original isn't too small.
