Tub Set - Do we need to keep water in the tub?
Comments (3)There are other protective measures to use besides water,if that is the reason for filling. Did they spray foam down before they set the tub? The water would be used to weigh the tub down until the foam sets up. We weighted ours down with kegs of nails, and just to be on the safe side, left them there over night, but foam sets up quickly. Look to see if yours was foamed, and if that's the case, im willing to bet that is the reason for the water, to act as a weight. I wouldn't want the water to set for that length of time, but maybe there is a solution you can add to prevent any staining/ringing.Call your plumber and get their take on it.Maybe it's a standard practice in your area that works, but i've never heard of using water for tub protection....See MoreKohler Cast Iron Tubs? Acrylic Tub? Americast?
Comments (13)My acrylic Bain Ultra air tub was set in a bed of mud with a piece of think plastic between the mud and tub. This was done for the ease of removing the tub if ever the need arises. It's as solid feeling on the bottom as my husband's Kohler cast iron tub. As for cleaning, that's a different story. You're not supposed to use anything abrasive on acrylic. Believe it or not, Scrubbing Bubbles is considered abrasive :( That's been my go to tub cleaner for years. To clean my acrylic tub RIGHT, I use Gel Gloss. It's a pain (literally!). You spray it on, let it sit, buff it and let it dry and then wipe the residue. When I'm in a pinch for time or physically limited, I will use Scrubbing Bubbles. There are very few non abrasive cleaners out there. One Bain Ultra suggested was Lemon scent Lysol. NOTHING works better than Scrubbing Bubbles!...See Moreacrylic vs. porcelain steel bathtub vs. refinishing existing tub
Comments (9)I renovated the bathroom in my condo last year, which included replacing the tub. The enamel on the old tub (installed in the 1970s) was very scratched. The new one is a a Bootz porcelain on steel tub. It's only been about 15 months since the renovation was completed but I have no problems so far. The non-slip bottom is not difficult to keep clean. I use Barkeeper's Friend cleaner (easily available in stores and not expensive) per the manufacturer's instructions. I went with porcelain on steel because I live on the second floor of an apartment building, and since the old one was not cast iron I didn't know if the weight of a new cast iron tub would be a problem. I went with Bootz on the recommendation of my contractor, who has installed a bunch of them with no complaints. A neighbor refinished their tub a few years back and the fumes were terrible....See MoreHelp needed with acrylic tub installation.
Comments (0)Hi folks. We're having difficulty with a tub install and could use some input. We purchased an MTI baths Andrea 11 airtub and intend on mounting it into a frame with deck material above the flange of the tub. The deck has been built and the tub is perfectly level when sitting on the frame. However, the tub sits on 2-3 inches of foam under which is a thin sheet (maybe 3/8 to 1/2 inch) of plywood/particle board. The whole system is called a "pre-leveled frame". The undersurface of the plywood rests about 1/4 inch off the concrete slab, so there is a gap under the entire pre-leveled frame. Basically, the tub is only supported by the flange sitting on the wood frame built by the carpenter. Our contractor wants to use expandable foam to fill the gap between the bottom of the plywood and the concrete slab. The manufacturer has stated that this might be ok, although there is a risk that it will cause the tub to rise unevenly and no longer be level. We are pushing for mortar. However, I am confused because of the rectangular piece of plywood that sits under the 2-3 inches of foam underneath the acrylic tub. Would we set the plywood right on top of several dollops of strategically placed mortar or would we have to have a uniform layer of mortar on which to place the tub. Any thoughts? We're kind of desperate here, as our contractor seems to be more interested in just getting the job done, rather than getting it done correctly. Any advice you can give would be most appreciated. Thanks! CM...See Morerpearson
