What is the make and model of the router you got for your birthday?

What is the make and model of your Laptop and what operating system is on it xp, or vista..

What error message do you get on the laptop when you try to connect to www.google.com.

Yes it is true if the laptop has or came with wireless connection ability it will connect to any establishment that has a wireless signal or WIFI as they call it.

My laptop is a Gateway M520 w/Mobile Intel, 3.06 GHz, 480 MB RAM and I am using XP. There isn't any error message; I get the message in the lower right corner of the screen that says, "Strength very good."

When I try to get on-line(using Internet Explorer), however, I get the error message that there is no connection and do I want to work off-line.

I forgot, the router is a Linksys from Radio Shack

There should have been complete instructions that came with your router explaining step by step how to install and get everything running. I have practically the same setup as you except that my router is a Netgear. I had a CD that I used to install the software to the router. My desktop, which is upstairs where the satellite modem and router are, is connected via an ethernet cable. My laptop, which I keep downstairs, connects wirelessly. You should not have any problem connecting with this setup.

Open your Control Panel on the laptop and click on Network and Internet Connections. Then click the icon for Network Connections. Mine shows Internet Gateway connected, which I assume is my desktop upstairs. Below that are three listings for LAN or High Speed Internet. One of those is Wireless Network and shows connected, along with the name of the wireless device in my laptop. You might check yours and see what it shows.

It may be the way you've configured the satellite router and the wireless router. It sounds like your satellite connection comes into a wired router and that there are multiple jaces that it has for network cables. I would first try plugging the laptop instead of the wireless router into one of the plugs. Can you connect now? If so, we go to the next step. If not, you may need to log in to the satellite service at that step, and your wireless router may need to be set up to log in. There should be instructions that tell how to do that.

If you can connect to the internet using a wire, you've probably got a configuration problem with the two routers. Your satellite will provide your house with an external IP address. the router will then split this among all of the devices connected to it using one of two address schemes--either 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x. One potential problem is if both routers are using the same scheme for their internal networks. If the satellite router is using 10.0.x.x, you need to set the wireless router to use 192.168.x.x to assign IP addresses (and vice versa).

If the satellite router is just a router and the wireless router has wired as well as wireless connections, you might be able to connect the wireless router to the incoming wire instead of the router you currently have. But it may have login information that you would need to put in the wireless router to log in to your service.

Your best bet may be to contact the satellite service provider and ask how you need to hook everything up.

In the Internet explore browser where you see the tabs at the top, FILE, EDIT, HISTORY ECT, please click the file tab, in the window that opens make sure there is no CHECK MARK where it says (WORK OFF LINE), IF THERE IS CLICK ON TO REMOVE IT AND REBOOT THE PC AND TRY TO CONNECT TO WWW.GOOGLE.COM

The address that Linda gives indicates to me that she has Wild Blue as her satellite provider. WB does NOT provide a router. The connection comes through a modem, and her Linksys router must be connected to the modem using a CAT 5 cable. Then the computers will connect, either wired or wirelessly, via the Linksys router. Don't expect WB to give you any help as they "don't support routers." Most of us use routers with no problems, but your support will have to come from Linksys, not Wild Blue.

Her laptop already shows a (strong connection) as she states: (" I get the message in the lower right corner of the screen that says, Strength very good." so the latop sees the connection fine) Then the computer ask her if she wants to work OFFLINE- the only way the pc would ask that is if work offline is checked in the browser. So it appears everything is working ok except for Internet Explorer. Unchecking the box should resolve the issue.

Yes, I do have Wild Blue and they don't support routers, so I'll have to call Linksys for help I suppose. And I did check to see if work off-line was checked and it was not.

Just for fun I would check the off line and un check it then reboot. In the mean time we can look at this C:\\WINDOWS\System 32\shdodc.dll/daserror.htm and see what it is.

If you connect the laptop upstairs directly to a hardwire connection can you connect that way?

Also try to reset the router un-plug it for a minute or so then plug back in. I don't understand because your computer is seeing the connection I really thought it would be that offline thing that happened to me.

I have tried all the "resets" and that doesn't help. I have taken the laptop to Radio Shack, where he bought the Linksys router and they say it should work as the laptop "sees" the wireless connection. And, yes, when I plug the laptop directly into the satellite modem, it works just fine. The laptop SEES the wireless connect, but for whatever reason, I can't get on-line. I might also mention that the satellite modem does NOT have a router--there's just the one router, the Linksys router that I got as a birthday gift.

I'll probably take the laptop back to Radio Shack or some other computer guru and see if they can "fix" it. I'm so frustrated I'm about to toss the whole da** thing into the pond!!! Augh! I told the Mr. I wanted the router AND SOMEONE TO INSTALL IT for my birthday--he got the router, but not the installer!!

I don't have wireless, so I can't check this, but I presume you have a wireless icon in your system tray. If you right click it, there should be 'show available wireless connections'. If you click this, you should see your network. Click the 'connect' button & see if it connects.

I think you mean shdodc.dll/dnserror not shdodc.dll/daserror?

Go to Control panel, networking, the TCP/IP associated with your network card, properties, Gateway, and enter the gateway address> Your Routers IP address.

If the gateway address is correct delete it and re-enter. Reboot.
