TV Over Fireplace: Please Show Me How You Designed Yours, Thanks!
Comments (23)I would not do it. It puts unnecessary strain on your neck or forces people to lie back like the dead and it's hard enough to teach my kids to not slouch. You might not think the neck thing matters but we all get old .. if we're lucky. It also makes me feel like I'm in a bar, an airport, or a bad restaurant. Sorry, if that offends anyone, it's how I feel and so far all of my clients have agreed without needing any persuasion. But that doesn't mean it's wrong to do it. Only the owner's family needs to like it. To me it's just not that difficult to put the TV to one side with the great adjustable brackets now available. The proper height of a TV is easy to determine, just sit on a couch, look straight ahead, and have someone measure the point you feel comfortable looking at. Perhaps take an average of your family members. If I had to do it, I would at least put the fireplace box tight to the floor, the mantel low, and be able to enclose the TV when not in use. These things are not pretty. It would also help to recess it and tip it downward for better viewing and less reflected light. I was in an Italian restaurant in the 60's called Charlie's that had multiple gas fireplaces recessed into the wall above seated head height. Would that work?...See MorePlease show me your small living/family room
Comments (42)I like the idea of the TV being on the wall opposite the window and the couch up against the window, but I wonder if it will be a problem since that is sort of a hallway area. I guess the other problem I would run into is where to put the cable box etc. I will do a little mock up of it today or do a computer drawing to see how it will all look. Painting the trim around the window can be done, I will have to fight with DH, since he loves it and says that it mirrors the window trim in the kitchen. @loribee and @oceanna I have taken a look at the gallery. Lots of great ideas with colors etc. I just keep thinking 'if only I had an extra 2 feet of living room space . . . ' Of course that would be too easy :-) @loribee, I was able to open the link that you sent me and something along those lines is what I was thinking for the chair. I prefer the ones with arms, though so I was thinking something small like that one, with open arms like the one in @chickadee2's link. I also like these chairs quite a lot. I have also toyed with @luckygal's idea of moving the living room to the office. The office is 9'x11'. I agree with the idea of at the very least painting the trim. I have seen some pics of it done, and it looks great. I was scared about doing it, but now I think I will. I also like the idea of a creamy color that was suggested for the walls and trim. If I work up the courage, I will remove the trim all together. Thanks again for all the wonderful thoughtful suggestions....See MorePlease show me your hardwood floors w/ brand name
Comments (10)This is Menard's "choice and best" or something like that grade in solid red oak, $1.71 / square foot on sale in 2009, unfinished pieces. We threw out almost a quarter of the stuff because it had knots or wild grain or some kid of burn from the plane or an irregular lip. A very kind friend donated 3 days labor and expertise and I supervised by sorting boards and handing the guys the next hand-chosen piece and took their guff for every one of them. We rented a nailer for 3 days. We put no stain on it but used 5 coats of Ace Hardware waterbase urethane, each coat followed by a session with a rented sander/buffer and a mound of disposables for it. Not sure how much the DIY cost ended up to be. Mat in photo is Gel Pro "Wicker" in Oyster Grey. Cabs are unstained red oak with lacquer finish. Roughly 9 months later, we are pleased with the floor. No problems so far. It does show dirt but we're hoping that once our landscaping is finished the dirt clumps will not be so common. Chocolate lab hair shows but not as bad as black lab hair....See Moreshow me your beverage centre/pantry walls please
