I'm guessing that you're using firefox and are talking about the bookmarks toolbar. If so, right click on the bar above where it should be (the one with File Edit View etc.) and on the drop down menu click on bookmarks toolbar which will put a check in front of it and you will have it back.
If you are talking about the task bar (which is the bar at the bottom of your screen) you may mean the quick launch area whis just to the right of the start button. If that is whats missing click on an empty spot on the taskbar then toolbars and put a check in front of quick launch.

I'm using IE, and it is not the bookmarks toolbar, but the taskbar on the bottom. I have all the little quick launch icons, but do not have the box that I had the URLs in that I had only to click to get to, such as thathomesite.com, etc. and others I visited regularly.

Right click on taskbar>toolbars> & then either links or address - I'm not sure which one you mean.

when you right click on the bar at the bottom in a clear spot make sure you uncheck lock toolbar, then you can make changes to it, if you lost the one where you actually type in an address that is the address bar so you would want to check that one in the toolbars list, if you mean you had one that said links and there you had saved some of the links to your fave sites then you want to check mark the one that says links, once you have done that and they are back in place be sure you re check to lock the tool bar so it stays put.

This is the little box,always just to the left of the quick launch items, specifically for the URLs that I go to often, and it stays there so that I do not have to type the address in each time, but just click the one I want. It is supposed to be on the taskbar and is not any more! I right-clicked the taskbar, but there is no address box listed. I do not want links.

ok lets try this again just to make sure, (if you recently installed SP3 to this pc skip to the bottom). right click any clear space down on the taskbar, click where it says lock task bar so that the check mark goes away and the task bar is now unlocked so that it will accept changes, right click once more and where it says tool bars put your cursor there and it will show you a list of available tool bars you want to put a check mark for the address bar. then once that is on there you can drag it and move it anywhere you want it on your task bar, once you have it set up where you want it go back again and right click on a clear spot and click on lock the taskbar so that it is locked.
I am guessing what you mean by the urls that you go to would be the drop down history list under the address bar.
There are only so many possibilities when talking about the taskbar.

SP3 KNOWN BUG! Now my next question is did you recently install SP3 on this computer? If so this is a known problem it deletes the address bar from the task bar options. there are some work arounds and third party products out there, here is a discussion from a pcworld forum about this sp3 issue.

this is a work around that some are saying does work.
right clicking the task bar click toolbars, then make new toolbar, drag the one you just made off of the taskbar to the desktop, then right click the new toolbar and you'll see the address bar. Select it then drag the toolbar you created back to the taskbar (to the far left by the start button), and you'll see the address bar on your taskbar you can right click and remove the toolbar you created and the address bar will stay. But it might again disappear when you reboot, be sure you do choose to lock the toolbar after you do it.

So try those out and let me know if you do have sp3.

Raven, I don't have the address option after I click on the tool bar, just "Windows Media Player, Links, language bar, desktop, quick launch, and new toolbar". I'm going to shut down the machine for now and get back to it tomorrow. Oh, no, I have not enstalled SP3. I do thank you for your time.

try the work around I posted above and then drag the new toolbar with the address bar to your task bar.

I was a bit leery of trying the work-around, and had decided I would learn to live without my address box. So, for some reason, I checked My Computer, looked at System, and it says I have Service Pack 3. WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? I bought my computer in 2004, with the SP2. I think I'm losing my mind, to say the least. I have been doing the automatic updates but did not, knowinly, go to SP3.

sp3 has been now pushed out in automatic updates so if you have your pc set to do updates automatically that is how you got it. If you want to be able to select which updates you chose then set your automatic updates to notify only then when it gives you the notice there are updates available you can choose the ones you want on your pc.

OK, thanks, Raven.....maybe it's not my mind then! I was so spoiled with having the address box, and now have to get used to googling for every darned thing. This is progress??

just do the little work around it is super easy just some dragging and dropping involved

just right click the taskbar and unlock it before you start, choosing toolbars then NEW toolbar is very simple and then dragging and dropping the new one on to the desktop is just one move. When you right click on that new one on the desktop you will be able to see the address bar option to select. Once you have that then just grab onto that new toolbar and drag it back to the taskbar next to the start button. Thats it now you have your new address bar toolbar on the taskbar. You can leave the other one on your desktop if you want or just delete it or drag it to the recycle bin.

But you do want to remember to right click on the taskbar and check to lock it so it all stays in place.

Phyllis, this had me really confused but now it sounds like you're using your address bar to navigate to sites instead of Favorites. Is that right? You click on it and your past sites come up?

Don't know how they disappear sometimes but here is the link from when I lost mine and the helpful suggestions from the good people on this forum. I'd been trying for days to find it and was really upset. Maybe some of these suggestions will work for you?

she is talking about the taskbar down at the bottom of her windows by the start button, one of the toolbars you can add there is an address toolbar but unfortunately sp3 removes the option to have the address toolbar down there now. I have mine set up that way with an address toolbar so I can use it with out even opening up a browser window first.

Pretty stupid for them to remove that option.

woo hooo I am celebrating with you!! Thank goodness for grandsons! I am glad you got your address bar back. I truly do not understand why an update like sp3 would take off features like that.

Uh, Raven, I spoke too soon.....this morning it's gone again! Evidently doesn't survive a shutdown for the night. GS can't figure why it does that, so.......!!
