slow connecting to internet and webpages

My iMac has been very slow over the past while. I am on Leopard, and have all the updates It takes a very long time to connect to Safari and also to webpages. Simple commands such as inputing text and dropping menus take forever. Often the tasks will timeout. I've been getting messages such as "Safari has shut down, there is a problem with flash, this error will be reported to Apple".

I know I have a lot of old emails and other files which I have to clean out. Does this have a bearing?

My trial support period with Apple support has expired, so have no recourse through them.

Is flash part of the OS

Flash is made by Adobe. It's not part of the operating system.

I could not help with the other issues not familiar with the Mac operating system. It does sound like you have more problems then a flash player issue though.

Not that it would make a difference, but I actually have Snow Leopard OS.

Is it possible that the flash software is corrupt?

I don't see an issue with AVG on 7. I do see an issue with McAfee see link. If you like AVG and are use to it then for sure consider it. Download it to the desktop and install it. If you restored to factory settings like you said McAfee should not be active, a perfect time to uninstall it. It should uninstall using programs and features, we don't even need to worry about that yet because no McAfee files are running yet. Note The McAfee removal tool is not removing some new versions of McAfee. "Enterprise Software Detected" please contact McAfee. Lets avoid that or it's off to Revo un installer. When you get home connect Ethernet cable to the laptop. Then try going to www.google.com. Only go there just see if Google opens. Let us know if you get this far and we can give you a direct link for AVG so you may install that. Then while McAfee is not active we can uninstall it as I mentioned. If you want I can look at a hijack log for you after.

I truly appreciate all your help mikie!It is so difficult for me to explain exactly what is going on.I only know computer basics and just enough terminology to be confusing. LOL Currently,I am connecting to the internet by going to Earthlink.net and clicking on the set up button. I am accessing my e-mail through Earthlink.net, too. That is the only way I can connect to webpages.I can no longer connect using on desktop icons or by going to internet connections. The problem started when I allowed a Belkin auto setup to program my wireless router to my computer. Even if I disconnect the router and try to connect the way I did before the router I still can not connect through my computer. The only reason I mentioned proxy server was that when earthlink had me join teamviewer4, teamviewer4 stated I was on a proxy server and that I needed to connect with my computer connection. I am basing my statement on that info. I may not be on a proxy server. Is connecting through Earthlink.net connecting to a proxy server? I have not called earthlink back yet as the tech seems to get frustrated with my problem before it can be corrected. Also, it is a minimum 1 hour call each time.

do you happen to still have the paper work that came with it like the directions and the instructions manual that will have all your default info in it and how to reset it. If not look on the bottom for the model and google that you should be able to go to the manufacturer site and find the manuals. Did you set up your router originally with it connected to a desktop computer, in other words which pc did you install the software on? The router is setup on the family PC not my Laptop. Unplugging the router (and modem if one) itself from power and powering down all the computers, then power up the modem if you have cable first then after a while power up the router and once it is fully up then power up the various computers, often makes a big difference. I think we have a modem and a router for Xbox and laptops. are you just using the Vista built in firewall? Yes.I'm using the windows firewall. what are you using is it cable or dsl or what for internet? My son says it's cable/DSL internet. have you done all your windows updates? Yes.Except for three optional ones. I'm confused about resetting the router. That would be on the main computer. Will this help my laptop internet connection?

Ok, Lets install another browser called Firefox See link. It's ok to have more then 1 and is actually recommend. I use Firefox daily, if I experience an issue like Page cannot be displayed The first thing I do is Open IE and see if that browser will display the web page, if it fails then I have a pretty good Idea the problem is the router or something else. Anytime I suspect a router problem first thing to do is unplug it for a couple mins then plug it back in. It's also true that a simple restart or reboot of the computer can fix many glitches. Others here are quite knowledgeable about DSL and will respond if you cont. to have issues. Good luck installing Firefox, it should be quite simple. Once you do get it installed copy this----> http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/comphelp/msg082038027114.html?2 Paste it into the firefox address bar hit enter and it should bring you back to this thread. As far as the other symptoms you describe in your post re-installing flash would do little to help. I don't know how to direct you on an 0sx-Snow Leopard OS.

What I could suggest is a Mac forum.

4I have a Mac running OS 10.6.4. Quite frankly I've always been less than impressed with Safari as a browser (both in a Mac and Windows environment). It tends to be slower than Firefox and a bit quirky from time to time. Having Mail open seems to exacerbate the problem although I don't know about OSX to explain it.

I might suggest trying Firefox.
