slow connecting to internet and webpages

My iMac has been very slow over the past while. I am on Leopard, and have all the updates It takes a very long time to connect to Safari and also to webpages. Simple commands such as inputing text and dropping menus take forever. Often the tasks will timeout. I've been getting messages such as "Safari has shut down, there is a problem with flash, this error will be reported to Apple".

I know I have a lot of old emails and other files which I have to clean out. Does this have a bearing?

My trial support period with Apple support has expired, so have no recourse through them.

Is flash part of the OS

Flash is made by Adobe. It's not part of the operating system.

I could not help with the other issues not familiar with the Mac operating system. It does sound like you have more problems then a flash player issue though.

Not that it would make a difference, but I actually have Snow Leopard OS.

Is it possible that the flash software is corrupt?

I truly appreciate all your help mikie!It is so difficult for me to explain exactly what is going on.I only know computer basics and just enough terminology to be confusing. LOL Currently,I am connecting to the internet by going to Earthlink.net and clicking on the set up button. I am accessing my e-mail through Earthlink.net, too. That is the only way I can connect to webpages.I can no longer connect using on desktop icons or by going to internet connections. The problem started when I allowed a Belkin auto setup to program my wireless router to my computer. Even if I disconnect the router and try to connect the way I did before the router I still can not connect through my computer. The only reason I mentioned proxy server was that when earthlink had me join teamviewer4, teamviewer4 stated I was on a proxy server and that I needed to connect with my computer connection. I am basing my statement on that info. I may not be on a proxy server. Is connecting through Earthlink.net connecting to a proxy server? I have not called earthlink back yet as the tech seems to get frustrated with my problem before it can be corrected. Also, it is a minimum 1 hour call each time.

I would be curious about how many bytes ccleaner removed, if you remember. Ccleaner mostly just removes temporary files that your browser has saved into folders from every webpage you load ... and cookies too. Nearly all webpages and their graphics & scripts are saved 8 duplicated into cache folders. They are saved so your internet connection doesnt have to download the same pages over & over as you visit those sites again unless changes are made on the page. Then they save the changed pages into different cache folders.. adds up to a whole lot of pages for the browser to keep track of over time. Often the database files & folders/files in the cache ..get mixed & screwed up. One thing I might first try, after running a full virus/spyware scan, would be to download the current version of firefox & once that is on the computer, uninstall firefox. do you happen to still have the paper work that came with it like the directions and the instructions manual that will have all your default info in it and how to reset it. If not look on the bottom for the model and google that you should be able to go to the manufacturer site and find the manuals. Did you set up your router originally with it connected to a desktop computer, in other words which pc did you install the software on? The router is setup on the family PC not my Laptop. Unplugging the router (and modem if one) itself from power and powering down all the computers, then power up the modem if you have cable first then after a while power up the router and once it is fully up then power up the various computers, often makes a big difference. I think we have a modem and a router for Xbox and laptops. are you just using the Vista built in firewall? Yes.I'm using the windows firewall. what are you using is it cable or dsl or what for internet? My son says it's cable/DSL internet. have you done all your windows updates? Yes.Except for three optional ones. I'm confused about resetting the router. That would be on the main computer. Will this help my laptop internet connection?

Wife's laptop has no problems picking up from this same Belkin wireless router. The Netgear is a 111v3 Wireless-G USB adapter. Powering everything off sporadically helps. The problem is quite sporadic. My experience has been that sporadic problems don't lend themselves well to boilerplate solutions and may result in a lot of hair pulling. Wife says we are on channel six and there is always someone else on channel six. We are out in the xburbs. Who else is on channel six. A neighbor a few hundred yards away perhaps? We have not figure out how to change channels.

On a windows machine I would recommend uninstalling flash and reinstalling it if it's a constant problem. The link to the Adobe page is above and has the uninstaller and the re- installer. As far as the other symptoms you describe in your post re-installing flash would do little to help. I don't know how to direct you on an 0sx-Snow Leopard OS.

What I could suggest is a Mac forum.

4I have a Mac running OS 10.6.4. Quite frankly I've always been less than impressed with Safari as a browser (both in a Mac and Windows environment). It tends to be slower than Firefox and a bit quirky from time to time. Having Mail open seems to exacerbate the problem although I don't know about OSX to explain it.

I might suggest trying Firefox.
