Firefox bookmarks/history are gone!

While ejecting a DVD from our computer (Dell XPS with Windows XP, I got the blue screen. I shut down the computer and re-started it.

When I re-started Firefox, I noticed that the history list and the bookmarks are gone!!

A search of the hard drive turns up numerous bookmarks files, including:

bookmarks.bak

bookmarks.html

bookmarks-2008-08-10.html (and previous dates as well)

Can I restore the bookmarks from any of these files? If so, how???

bookmarks > organize bookmarks > import and backup should do the trick.

yes it always creates a backup so the latest dated one would be the one to use just follow those directions bob gave you and point it to the latest dated one like the 8-10 one you mentioned).
also if anything else seems quirky you might want to do a system restore instead so you fix anything else that might have got scrambled, that may fix your firefox too so you may want to try that first. just do start, all programs, accessories,system tools , system restore, restore to an earlier date, select the date just before that blue screen happened and have it restore to that point. it will reboot and take a little longer, if you are not happy after you try that you can always tell it to just go back each one is undoable.

IT might have wiped out your entire firefox profile, try the system restore first.

Thank you so much the problem appears to be fixed. The update had automatically loaded yesterday, but I hadn't yet restarted FIrefox due to all of the problems. So I restarted it, and then went into "safe mode". Then deleted the cookies, cache, etc. (I don't think I had ever deleted cookies or the cache)and other than the frezzing happening when I hit the delete button (not surprizing as I can only imagine how much stuff was in those files), everything is back to normal.So thanks to all 3 of you. Another words, their uninstall doesnt work too well. Actually that is the way most uninstallers work. The uninstaller will remove the original program files. But not any related files that were created after the install. Settings, favorites, cookies, etc would have to be deleted manually. Sometimes you get a message saying the application has been uninstalled but some files could not be removed and you will need to manually delete them. You wouldn't want to uninstall MS Word and suddenly have all your .doc files disappear. Pooh Bear

The toolbar at the top of the page with File, Edit, etc. on it is the menu bar. Right click on an empty part of your menu bar and choose customize from the drop down menu. You will get a box with with a lot of items you can click on and drag to the menu bar or other toolbars. If your menu bar should be gone right click on an empty part of whatever bar is there and click on menu bar on the drop down menu to put a check in front of it. You should then have your menu bar.

Is the profile you found in the correct place ? If so, just use the Profile Manager as I suggested above - that's what it's for. You can copy and paste files in, and it might work, but historically that has led to some problems in Firefox. I have done it though. If you use the Profile Manager, you can be sure Firefox "knows" about a different profile. Are you having trouble with that ? (Btw, even if the profile is in an atypical place it will still be loaded by FF and run fine. I actually put my profiles in a different place that I like to keep them.) I don't quite understand your reply to me, "I took it to finding Firefox profiles if it can't be accessed through Firefox." If this clarifies any, you can't run the Profile Manager while Firefox is running. You have to close FF, start the Profile Manager as is explained in the either of the articles, then choose a different profile as the default. It's pretty easy actually. To start the Profile Manager, in the Start>>Run dialog box, type in: firefox.exe -p

Thank you!!! I've restored the bookmarks, thanks to your help.

Unfortunately the history is still gone.... can anyone point me in the direction of the steps to recover it?

yea thats why I had suggested doing the system restore instead because my bet is it deleted your entire firefox profile not just your bookmarks and history.

Are your add ons and themes still there are your settings still set how you set them up in your profile?

or your profile is still there and for some reason it opened up a brand new profile for you after the blue screen. I would check in your firefox folders to see if there is more than one profile.
Profiles

Personally I would do the system restore because my bet is that is not the only thing that got settings scrambled you just have not noticed yet. IT takes only a few minutes.
