Close your browsers before you use the control panels add/remove programs to uninstall Java that's listed there.. It might say Oracle Java. It will remove it from the browsers and the main program from your folders. Unfortunetly java uninstall does leave some junk but generally its no harm. Don't worry about javaScript. That's a different thing. If you want.. there is a tiny program called JavaRa that will additionally remove some junk... My system is 64-bit as stated in my OP. I went to the link that exgm post and this was on the site: If you are using: * 32-bit Internet Explorer (IE), you need to download 32-bit Java (Verify browser) * 64-bit IE, you need to download 64-bit Java (Verify browser) Verify if you are using 32-bit or 64-bit IE browser. Follow these steps to verify whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit browser. Launch Internet Explorer browser. Click on the Help tab at the top. Select About Internet Explorer which will bring up an information window. If version of IE displays 64-bit Edition, then it is 64-bit IE, otherwise it is 32-bit browser. The older Update for Java states that it is for 64-bit but the update 17 doesn't. I will just remove the Update 14. Thanks everyone... Jean

I am having problems with FF and found this thread - I am completely out of the news loop so had heard nothing about Java problems so...hope you can help. I have a mac running 10.6.8. In the middle of watching netflix last night I got an error message saying that Java plug in was disabled and to enable it and restart FF. I checked everything and it was enabled, I disabled my ghostery, etc. Nothing made a difference. Today I tried an update to java and downloaded that (found by check for updates on my mac menu). still didn't fix it. So I found this thread and decided I would uninstall the whole thing. I found directions on FF about how to uninststall Java. But when I seach my mac for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin I get nothing, nowhere. If I just search for Java, I get dozens of hits, but none of them for the applet plugin. I went back and disabled it, but am wondering what to do now. How can I uninstall it if I can't find it? From the Java settings in Control Panel, if you select the "Java" tab and then "View", how many product listings are there? The current one is 1.6.0_18. If older versions are also present, they can be highlighted and removed using the "Remove" button.
