Confused About Java On WinXP

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading about the Java situation here.

I have windows XPSP3 with IE 8 and Firefox Browsers.

I went to my control panel and there is nothing Java there, but when I went to add/remove programs there are two things Java in Add/Remove programs. One says Java 7 update 9 and the other one says JavaFX 2.1.1

When I did a search for the Java control Panel nothing showed up.

I am not sure where to go in Firefox to see if anything there could be disabled, can anyone tell me where I can find the Java there?

Now for IE 8 I have no idea where I would go to see if there is anything about Java too disable it, that is if it is there at all.

Now if I do a search for Java only a whole bunch of stuff pops up, there are to many of them to post. I don't know how to do a copy and paste here to show you.

I'm afraid if I start deleting stuff in Revo Uninstaller, that I will mess up something on my computer.

So this is my dilemma and I don't know what to do about it. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Go into Control Panel>Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Java 7 Update 9 and the other one..reboot..go to start> and in the search box, type in Java..a Java folder should be the first item on the list..right click on the Java folder and select delete..reboot..you will be good to go..havent found anything on the computer that requires Java to run yet..so its really not needed anyhow..lettuce know how you make out

I've run into problems on a few sites. Can't sign into my bank, Facebook and Photobucket. Even having some trouble on GW when I click on 'All Forums' the page just hangs and doesn't go through. No big deal. I have found some ways around most.

If it lives it will fill out. Maybe they took 2-ft.-long hardwood cuttings and rooted them, sold those. Or just maybe it was on its way to being trained as a tree shape.

Randy FF just upgraded when I rebooted.. Jeb IE won't work at all.. it does load but thats all I can get it to do. I hate the thought of maybe having format this stupid machine LOL...Stupid but can't do without it.. I have so many things for Paint shop pro I couldn't save them all. you do definitely want to keep java updated and you want to make sure all the old versions are gone from your pc because the really old ones can be a problem just having them there, you can make sure that is taken care of by running this little program called Javara. To update your java just go to your control panel and double click on the little java coffee cup then click on the update tab and let it check for updates and install any it finds but watch closely as it does this so that nothing extra like toolbars etc are installed that are not wanted. JavaRa check for old versions/remove old versions, check for updates. IT is free. to make sure the rest of the stuff that needs updating is current use this tool Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) you need to keep these things updated to stay secure from the latest infections.

Thanks, I have been using the "Task Manager" (using alt/cont/del) since Windows 95. I can't recall any longer what I did with Windows 3. whatever, but up until the days of Vista I worked at a company that supplied my computer needs including technical support. Over this period I have used the TM, as owbist, suggests to see what was eating resources, and yes to KILL ! (caps and exclamation). This has to my recall resulted in only the subject running process shutting down, and being quit willing to run the next time I activated it. I am reasonably cautious, indeed that is one aspect of my coming to this forum for advice. I think I understand enough to not follow bogus advice, has there ever been a problem here with people posting advice that is likely to cause harm? I have on occasions had difficult problems, only a year ago with an old Gateway running XP, and received detailed instructions on how to obtain running information and then posting that. I forget now who the generous person was, I think it was not you, obwist. This resulted in the old Gateway running better then within a week I cracked the screen. Still worked but not much fun to read... thus I became an owner of a new Gateway with W8 which has been the subject of my question of late.

Jane, I'm not an expert but anyway.

Is it possible that while you were removing/disabling Java you accidentally/mistakenly turned off JavaScript in your browser?

Hi genes,

I don't mind doing that, but how do I know that I won't be getting the JavaScript by mistake? I sure don't want to do that.

Once removed does it take it off of all browsers?

Close your browsers before you use the control panels add/remove programs to uninstall Java that's listed there.. It might say Oracle Java. It will remove it from the browsers and the main program from your folders. Unfortunetly java uninstall does leave some junk but generally its no harm.

Don't worry about javaScript. That's a different thing.

If you want.. there is a tiny program called JavaRa that will additionally remove some junk...

Thirdfrt..As Mikie said, not doing anything with the browsers, soley thru add/remove in the control panel..there will probably be only one or two entries..
then as mentioned by RC, go to the Start>in search type in "Java"..a Java folder should appear at the top of the list..right click on the folder and delete that too..HTH

Jane, I have absolutely no issues with online banking or facebook...I am using Win7 Ultimate 64 with IE9..

Richard got the prize! I had turned off Java Script (thought they were the same thing). Just turned it on and got my banks and photobucket back.

I did not delete Java but disabled it (I think). So far no problems
Some here gave that information and I thank you for it.

jane ny; don't feel bad, my girlfriend has a Masters degree in Network Security, and she admitted to me that she turned off javascript because she thought it was the same thing as Java. I laughed so hard I had to pick up my false teeth off the floor! Lol.
