Confused About Java On WinXP

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading about the Java situation here.

I have windows XPSP3 with IE 8 and Firefox Browsers.

I went to my control panel and there is nothing Java there, but when I went to add/remove programs there are two things Java in Add/Remove programs. One says Java 7 update 9 and the other one says JavaFX 2.1.1

When I did a search for the Java control Panel nothing showed up.

I am not sure where to go in Firefox to see if anything there could be disabled, can anyone tell me where I can find the Java there?

Now for IE 8 I have no idea where I would go to see if there is anything about Java too disable it, that is if it is there at all.

Now if I do a search for Java only a whole bunch of stuff pops up, there are to many of them to post. I don't know how to do a copy and paste here to show you.

I'm afraid if I start deleting stuff in Revo Uninstaller, that I will mess up something on my computer.

So this is my dilemma and I don't know what to do about it. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Go into Control Panel>Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Java 7 Update 9 and the other one..reboot..go to start> and in the search box, type in Java..a Java folder should be the first item on the list..right click on the Java folder and select delete..reboot..you will be good to go..havent found anything on the computer that requires Java to run yet..so its really not needed anyhow..lettuce know how you make out

I've run into problems on a few sites. Can't sign into my bank, Facebook and Photobucket. Even having some trouble on GW when I click on 'All Forums' the page just hangs and doesn't go through. No big deal. I have found some ways around most.

Z, You might have just solved a concern I had last night trying to remove Adobe Reader 9 from a friend's XP laptop. I was using REVO, and like SF's Java attempt it stopped at 2/3 of the way on the first step; report of creating restore point and action by the product's built-in uninstaller). It also presented a window with an alert regarding a protected registry key. I never thought of running the process as the administrator. The obvious. Duh! usually what has been said is that you can shut everything but explorer and systray. The reason many times it tells you to install in safe mode is because in safe mode all those "running Processes" are not yet running like they are in normal start up mode so therefore you do not have to do all the shut down of the running stuff. I generally just make sure there are no obvious programs running, I shut my browsers, close all email applications, if it says to shut down specific programs I do that, if it says disconnect from internet I do that. The rest I leave alone. I would guess everyone has their own method.

javara is a very legit and safe program we have used and recommended it for years on the help forums. the old ones can be removed manually but using javara just makes it easy and gets some that you may miss manually. any versions you show other than the latest version can be removed. Java has recently added a feature that is supposed to remove the old version it is replacing but they never put out anything that would remove the versions prior to that so it is not surprising to see some very old versions still listed on older pcs. How I would proceed, do the update from the java icon on the pc, that should provide you with 7-7, then run javara and let it remove all other versions it finds.

no definitely not Moni!In fact it is extremely outdated, it's really important to keep updated java, adobe reader and other adobe product, including flash on every browser,which is mentioned in the second link for Corrines blog. You are definitely at risk. Shirley do you have the latest version of Firefox if not update it, 18 is current. Some sites do use java, most are moving to newer safer technology. YouTube shouldn't be a problem. Firefox yesterday disabled java in their browser which is why you are not seeing it now. It sounds like you are ok. According to recent info supposedly there will be a patch Tuesday, we shall see.

Jane, I'm not an expert but anyway.

Is it possible that while you were removing/disabling Java you accidentally/mistakenly turned off JavaScript in your browser?

Hi genes,

I don't mind doing that, but how do I know that I won't be getting the JavaScript by mistake? I sure don't want to do that.

Once removed does it take it off of all browsers?

Close your browsers before you use the control panels add/remove programs to uninstall Java that's listed there.. It might say Oracle Java. It will remove it from the browsers and the main program from your folders. Unfortunetly java uninstall does leave some junk but generally its no harm.

Don't worry about javaScript. That's a different thing.

If you want.. there is a tiny program called JavaRa that will additionally remove some junk...

Thirdfrt..As Mikie said, not doing anything with the browsers, soley thru add/remove in the control panel..there will probably be only one or two entries..
then as mentioned by RC, go to the Start>in search type in "Java"..a Java folder should appear at the top of the list..right click on the folder and delete that too..HTH

Jane, I have absolutely no issues with online banking or facebook...I am using Win7 Ultimate 64 with IE9..

Richard got the prize! I had turned off Java Script (thought they were the same thing). Just turned it on and got my banks and photobucket back.

I did not delete Java but disabled it (I think). So far no problems
Some here gave that information and I thank you for it.

jane ny; don't feel bad, my girlfriend has a Masters degree in Network Security, and she admitted to me that she turned off javascript because she thought it was the same thing as Java. I laughed so hard I had to pick up my false teeth off the floor! Lol.
