Compaq windows 7

Service pack 1 (sure though it was 2 or 3 but must not be)

64 bit..at least That is what I saw somewhere on the machine.

I think I have the latest FireFox (11.0)

A couple of hours ago I got a message from FireFox when I rebooted. It had something to do with updating FF.. I said NO as every time I do I seem to have problem.. that's when they blocked Java. I'm not sure what happened but I lost Java & in trying to get it back I lost my computer. I finally got it back by unplugging it & plugging it back in.

I don't use Java much but do for one of my favorite card games.

I'm not even sure if I have the right Java..it works but I want to be sure my computer is secure.

I don't know what I'm doing & feel so helpless. I know this sounds confusing because I am confused & have no one else to help me.

Windows 7 is currently running at Service Pack 1 so your ok there. If you saw 64Bit somewhere then you're are running 64bit operating system. The latest version of Firefox is 11.0 so your ok there. If the Java working then you're ok. Looks like you fixed what ever was going on by un-plugging it and replugging it in.

WHEW.. Thanks Zep.. it really had me worried & I didn't know how to explain what happened. What is the latest Java?
wonder what version I have now?

security professionals and home land security are still recommending the removal/fully disable of java since there's still vulnerabilities with it, if you must use it do so very carefully and on a site by site basis. Only have the latest java version on your PC. Firefox has disabled java plugin in their browser. I personally have removed it from my computers that had it, the newest never had it installed. These recommendations are not from me personally they are from home land security and the security professionals. Be aware that there's also now malware that masquerades as a java patch. I am having problems with FF and found this thread - I am completely out of the news loop so had heard nothing about Java problems so...hope you can help. I have a mac running 10.6.8. In the middle of watching netflix last night I got an error message saying that Java plug in was disabled and to enable it and restart FF. I checked everything and it was enabled, I disabled my ghostery, etc. Nothing made a difference. Today I tried an update to java and downloaded that (found by check for updates on my mac menu). still didn't fix it. So I found this thread and decided I would uninstall the whole thing. I found directions on FF about how to uninststall Java. But when I seach my mac for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin I get nothing, nowhere. If I just search for Java, I get dozens of hits, but none of them for the applet plugin. I went back and disabled it, but am wondering what to do now. How can I uninstall it if I can't find it? When I go to that page, it does not list my system information. So I clicked each additional suggestion. No luck. Specifics are: The Firefox plugin is enabled. Nothing happens when I try to open the Java panel. It won't open. The instructions for clearing the cache do not seem right. When I go to the Edit button, I do not have a + or option to expand. So I could not do that one. I did try to find it through tools - options - advanced - network. It says I have no cache being stored for on or offline (I had just run ccleaner before =- so that cleared the cache, I think). I still selected clear now - but I couldn't tell if anything happened. So all the options either showed no problem =- or I couldn't not execute them. Any pointers would be great. Thanks. Lynn.

you do definitely want to keep java updated and you want to make sure all the old versions are gone from your pc because the really old ones can be a problem just having them there, you can make sure that is taken care of by running this little program called Javara. To update your java just go to your control panel and double click on the little java coffee cup then click on the update tab and let it check for updates and install any it finds but watch closely as it does this so that nothing extra like toolbars etc are installed that are not wanted.

I guess I have messed up again. I should have left well enough alone. That link took the old Java off but the check for updates won't click so I again have no java. What can I do now to make it work again. I sure hope I can.
I also clicked on the cup in control panel & I believe that is what took the java off but there was nothing there to put it back on.
I guess I am just getting to old to manage this confounded machine... but it is one of my best friends.

Then test the version at this web site after you install it.

At last I think I have it right. The only way I could get Java was by using Ninite. I'm sure it is the correct version getting it from them. I was about to give up.
I will try Secunia later today. I hope most things are up to date. Wish me luck on that :0)
