I got the same pop-up about Java Consol. I wonder the same thing. Thought we needed it.

Hum, lost my first attempt to respond.

Jane, assume you to say you've loaded or at least checked for a compatible Java Console. What about Yahooo? When I activated Firefox this time I was again asked if I wanted to download Yahoo Toolbar. Seems this pop-up is related activating Firefox, suggests it is safe.

Only you and I interested? Strange, well maybe some of the experts are on vacation.

Once and for all: How to stop the iVillage ad onslaught. First we need to understand how it's done: iVillage doesn't bother to try and buy ads directly from all the various companies that show up on the pages of GW. Instead they use large ad-service agencies like doubleclick, akamai and pointroll. You can visit some of these sites if you'd like to see who's behind the ads. http://www.akamai.com http://www.doubleclick.com/us http://pointroll.com This makes it easy to block out all or almost all of the ads very easily, just block the originating sites. Right now all the ads on GW come from: http://amch.questionmarket.com http://a820.g.akamai.net http://iv.doubleclick.net http://i.ivillage.com http://m.2mdn.net http://tste.ivillage.com http://img-cdn.mediaplex.com http://ads.vmirror.com http://cmhtml.ivillage.overture.com http://ads.pointroll.com The Universal Solution.This will work on Windows systems for all browsers; IE, FireFox and Netscape. The Windows operating system provides a system-level method to block specific IP addresses before they even get to the browser. To effect this solution you need to edit a Windows system file called hosts. Scroll down to the end of the list and you'll see an entry for Scripting. Disable all the sub-entries. Now select the tab labeled Privacy. In the bottom of the box that appears check on the option to block pop-ups. I recommend you also click on the button Advanced and select the option to block Third-party Cookies. Mikie...You're a genius! And...beyond that...never let it be said that any of us supposed techie geeks know everything about everything all of the time. :-) I'm living proof...it t'ain't true. Case in point. Recently, I had to have a new modem installed by my cable ISP. The young man that did it was charming and very helpful but I fear he tried to clean up a couple of apps that he thought might be slowing my system. After he left....I checked to make sure everything was running and then shut my system down. 24 hours later...I was tearing my hair out wondering why the loading speed of my system hadn't improved. To the contrary...it had gotten worse. Well...I did all the usual checks...checking wiring/plugs [theirs and mine]...checked apps...defrag...invasive programs, yada...yada...yada...and still couldn't find the problem....UNTIL I happened by here this morning and read this thread. HALLELUJAH !!! As soon as I read your post...I went looking and apparently my young ISP serviceman wasn't aware that Java was a system requirement...and he uninstalled it. Thanks to your incite...I reloaded it and my system is now delightedly skipping along at its original fast pace. THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU !!! Anne

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click once or twice on the CPU tab at the top of the listings: this will show what process is chewing up the most resources (which will probably be the culprit). Also, look at the CPU Usage line at the bottom of Task Manager and see what the % Usage is. Then report back here on what you found out.

CCleaner also offers to install the Yahoo toolbar. I always decline since I don't need anything additional cluttering up my desktop. It's a matter of personal choice.

As Firefox now seems to come with the Google toolbar why would you want Yahoo? Just curious of course. I do not allow any of those toolbars to clutter up my valuable viewing space. I drag the space where I type my Google query up to the right of the address bar and leave the rest of the toolbar off entirely. This space also has a small drop down menu to the left of it offering my the option to use Google, Yahoo and 4 other features if I need.

Regarding the Jave Console I do not have one but I do have Java installed.

Good advice, thanks.

One of my main concerns/surprise is that the Firefox installer seemed to be linked to Yahoo. I think the installer checking on Java may have been necessary to the installation of the update.

I was never offered Yahoo, but I don't have a Yahoo account or deal with them at all. I only received the notice regarding the Java Console (which I don't know what it is or whether I have it.) I have regular Java installed, but 'console'??

I only use the toolbar with Firefox. It's the same one I always had. No Yahoo! Don't know why you got that message. If I had I wouldn't accept it. Why do we seem to be the only people who got that pop-up??

I have just moved "on", No Yahoo toolbar and no Java Console.

I don't have a Yahoo account either, again it seems to me this was all stimulated by the Firefox Update, and so everyone should have gotten the same "opportunities".

The 'Java Console' is part of the 'Java' installation. If you go to 'Start/Control Panel' and double click 'Java'or right click/Open you can check the version in the general tab and check for updates from the update tab.
