Retrieving Info from old modem question.

Hi,

I gave my old modem to my daughter before I had a chance to get everything out of My Documents. For some reason she can't get her computer to work although when I had it it was fine. At any rate, how can I retrieve my info from that modem? Do I need to take it somewhere or is there something I should buy to do this, and most importantly is it easy to do myself with very little computer skill? I really need to get this info as it's many years of genealogy research and pictures. Thank you.

The modem wouldn't have any information on it. A modem is just a device that lets you connect to other computers over the phone line. Are you sure it was a modem you gave her?

are you meaning the hard drive? as bpgreen said the modem is what you plug the phone cord into on the back of the pc that lets it dial out it has nothing to do with stored info.

your stored info is on your hard drive.

yes sure you have to have the usb device plugged in to your pc to connect it is virtually a mini cell phone that accesses the wireless networks, not knowing which version you got, some use 3G technology. You can get a short usb cable or dongle and hook the modem device into that so it will not be plugged directly into your pc if that would help. I have an Att air card which is like that and it does get in my way sometimes when plugged in but since my wireless mouse has one of those usb plug in dealies sticking out too I just have to get used to not hitting them. I have no idea what the cord is you are describing so no clue if you could use it, what does it say in the info what the cord is? Which model modem did you get that would be helpful?

Is there a specific poster or discussion you're looking for? That was the time frame in which home-building regulars like Mizzou, JasoninMI, Allison0704, demifloyd, SarahMakes6 and quite a few others created another website and pretty much vacated GW. I bet one of them could help if anyone remembers whatever it is you hope to find. They can all be found at www dot bahrr dot proboards dot com. LOL, wish I could rattle off the names of IRL friends as easily as I can remember old internet friends! ;)

there are a lot of internet faxing options many are free some charge a fee if the size is large. FaxZero.com do a google search for "internet faxing" what type of internet connections are you using, what type of modem or router? which version of windows? Are you certain there is not a built in modem in your pc already? most have them and they are generally fax modems. You could run belarc advisor on your pc and get a list of what is on it. go to this link, in the tutorial box scroll to item 100 it gives you the directions to how to use fax in windows wizard. We had Tightrope surgery done on our 90 lb Akita 4 years ago. She was only 4 years old at the time, but I thought the TPLO was way too invasive. A week after surgery, the cast came off & we started 10 min walks 3-4 times a day, Never left the yard. we did put a ramp up the steps - they didn't want her doing any steps for 3-4 months. also had to keep her off the couch (no jumping) - so I had garbage bags of empty soda bottles that we would put on the couch to keep her off. Got quite a few comments & looks fromvisitors :) We gave her Tramadol for the pain - which worked just fine. The vet also suggested water therapy. I couldn't find anywhere in my area for this - so we went to the lake 3-4 times per week & she swam. Now - 4 years later, she doesn't seem to have any problems. Walks fine, runs & jumps -but on cold mornings, she is a little stiff until she gets moving. All of the food & treats I give her are loaded with glucosamine & omega 3, which I believe has contributed to her recovery & maintenance. We still swim as often as we can. Kita is pure white & is still my lovable polar bear.

Okay, now you can all see my ignorance to computer knowledge. The "Tower" then that you plug everything into, so I guess that's the hard drive? I feel so silly.

oh you mean the entire computer, that is usually called the cpu or the pc tower.

in side the tower are many things one of which would be your hard drive which would contain your files and information including your My Documents folder.

If it was working for you, you should be able to just plug in your monitor, keyboard and mouse and plug it in to the wall socket and boot it up, once booted then you should be able to go to your my documents area and copy what ever files you want to either a cd or dvd that you can burn if that pc has a burner or you can put in a little usb thumb drive and put them on there.
