hey harvestman .... that is personal experience in my z5 .... i will submit.. that i spoke authoritatively ... as if it is backed by science ... but once i comprehended that if you GET THEM DORMANT ... AND KEPT THEM DORMANT .... my success rate went from 50/50 to 95% .... the early experience was hybrid T roses ... where unprotected canes.. will thaw on the sun side.. and not on the dark side... and that happening repeatedly ... will kill the cane.. and if that goes all the way to the graft.. it is dead ... and why here.. in the great white north.. we bury the plant to about 6 inches in loose mulch.. and then put a styrophome cone over them ... no sun.. no wind.. and a thermal breaker for ambient air temp changes .... and the theory was reinforced when i moved 1700 potted plants of all kinds in january 2000 ... and put some in the pole barn ... which came out of dormancy early.. because the barn ended up a z7 .. and i had plants coming out of dormancy 2 to 3 months prior to last hard frost ... versus those allowed to freeze solid.. and stacked on their sides on the north side .. outside of the barn .. where they stayed frozen/dormant.. until near last frost ... as i said.. IMHOpinion .... its all about stressing the plant.. by going in and out of dormancy.. whether it is the roots.. the plants.. the bark.. the liquids inside.. i do not know ... and i doubt it is much of an issue ... south of z6 ... its just that zones 5 and 6 .. are so flexible ... anyway.. good luck ken

This is that plant that folds its leaves when you touch it. Other common names are "tickle me plant", "prayer plant", "sleeping plant", etc. Mimosa family. I see some on sale at Amazon or Ebay but I have learned to not trust those seed sources, in particular the ones coming from Asia. Does anyone have any seeds/seedlings/larger plants that they would like to trade or sale? Thanks!

It's all about the oil in the plant. We use dawn dishwashing liquid which is an excellent oil cutter. Wash with it as soon as you think you've been exposed. If we still get a rash...not blistered or open...but the beginning red stages, we wipe it off with gasoline on a rag and then wash the gasoline off. Gasoline is the best oil cutter. It's amazing to see how quickly the rash will go away once the oil is removed. Of course, I'd never use that on my face or other sensitive parts....and we do use unleaded! I remember my GF when we were kids made the mistake of putting a hot wash cloth on her poison ivy rash as a way to get the itching down. It only helped emulsify and spread the oil and she too got it around her eye which swelled like crazy. She was quite a mess. But I agree that if you are that allergic...get someone else to do the down and dirty. I have pulled poison ivy out with gardening gloves many times and have had no reaction, so there are many of us who are less sensitive who should be able to help.
