Are roots touching pots damage-sensitive to cold?

I am trialing some hardy russian pomegranates in PA and since they might be more cold-sensitive (esp when younger), I probably will wrap the trees the same way you do an in-ground fig the first year. So I will wrap the top portion with a carpet most likely ... and since they are in pots (until next year), they will be protected from wind/rain as I will move them into a little outdoor shed (so won't need any plastic tarp around the carpet to keep out rain)...

I have a quick question about if there is any need to protect the roots from the cold ... The cold winter air will still be touching the pots ... will that cause damage to the outer roots which may be slightly circling the pot? If so, is there someway to protect the roots (planting in larger pot so roots don't touch the pot but dirt around it)?

Just curious if this is a worry.

Thanks!,

Arian
