I'll be in Southern CA next month.........

First a big hello to all y'all! Life and work has been a bit challenging for me the last couple of months so I've not had much time to be here on the forum. Happy Birthday to all of those that I've missed and special thoughts and prayers to those who have had bad times. I'll fill you in later this weekend as I finally have some free time to myself.

I'll be in San Diego next month for my nephews graduation from the Marines Boot Camp at Camp Pendleton. We will be arriving Wednesday afternoon and plan on flying back on Saturday. I'm thinking about renting a car and heading up to LA either late Friday night(11-14) or early Saturday morning(11-15). I would love to get together with anyone that might be interested or has some free time that weekend. I could stay Saturday night and be around Sunday if that would be better. I do have to be back at work Monday so this is a quick trip. Lunch, dinner, TJ's, Surfas(sp), I'm open for anything and suggestions. I think it would be great to see some of you again and meet the rest of the west coast gang. Let me know what y'all think. I have to finalize my plans here in the next week or so. Oh, if anyone is in the SD area let me know too. There are so many of you out there I can't remember where everyone lives.

I moved from Southern CA when I retired a lot of years ago. I grew roses there but my passion was really Camellias for which I had 100 or so even in my small lot there. Well enough of that. I live in Upstate NY Z 5. On 10 acres. My rose growing is done in less than ideal soil mostly because the sunny areas have shallow soil under lain with shale. Also on the clay side. I also agree with grafted on multiflora and Canadian nurseries as American sources such as J&P graft on Dr. Huey which is less than ideal for cold zones although it seemingly is hardy. I wander off. Mostly I want to put in plug for Kordes roses. They are one of the biggest and oldest growers of roses in the world and they are in a cold zone. They have worked for a very long time to hybridize using hardy wild roses. They are not well represented in the US partly because of a prejudice against things German a left over from WW2. Anyway I have found there roses great for me. Brownell's were hybridized for Z6 as their breeders lived in RI, Z6. They have a reputation for being hardy partly from their marketing label - Sub-Zero. Anyway look into Kordes roses. I have found them not only hardy but also beautiful roses and chosen for over-all great performance.

By definition, the seasonal shift in wind brings moisture (humidity/higher dew points) to our area which in turn provides the opportunity for heat-of-the-day thunderstorms. OK, tropicals to grow. Click on my ID name to see what I am growing here. We may have another 1 month of banana growing weather. Either plant them immediately or wait until March when the soil warms up (although in a raised bed that will occur much sooner). http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Musaceae/Musa_acuminata.html I am growing Bananas, Avocados (4 trees), mangos, guavas, pineapples, apples, white sapote, Key Lime, Grapefruit, Tarocco Blood Orange, papaya, passionfruit vine, etc in Phoenix. They grow Keitt mangos commercially in Coachella (low desert near Indio/Palm Springs) and sell them in stores. I've eaten one and they taste great. Avocados are very tricky because they are sensitive to salt and sunburn easily on the branches until they grow up enough where the leaves shade the stems. Drainage is key and mulch is very important too. They will need sunshade the first year and eastern exposure with west-sun shade is better. I don't agree 100% with this info but it's pretty good (forget the rocks for drainage part). Sure!! Especially if you have determinate type tom's. I find my indeterminate plants can get really HUGE by August. I put my plants out very late this year and they are already 4' and no doubt will be topping thier 5' cages by August. By starting a second planting of my indeterminates in late May I can have fresh new plants rather than trying to coax older plants to continue being productive. Just be careful of where you plant the new plants. Be sure to plan ahead of time where you are going to plant your fist plants and then the second set. Make sure you plant the fist plants in such a way that they will not act as shade to the second set. Once you know the East/West sun patten be sure to plant the first set of plants on the West side. This way the new plants can be set out and not be shaded by the larger ones. This might be a "no kidding" thing, but if you don't take these things into account in the very beginning it can really mess you up when it comes to do the second planting. Take it from a guy who has already been there and done that. Also, stagger the planting of your determinate plants every couple of weeks. That way you will always have a fresh supply of tom's comming to the table and not one giant harvest. Here in Thousand Oaks, I have had nice ripe tomatos at the end of October. Even though the fall daytime temps stay nice and warm the nighttime temps can drop to the point that the plants will not set fruit. When temps begin to fall too low I pick my best few plants at the end of the season and wrap plastic around them in the evening to help hold in some heat and to keep the chill off. I have even put a flood light inside the wrapped cage at night to help keep the temp up if I feel like I really want to keep the harvest going longer. I don't use grow lights because I want the plant to have the needed rest time it normally gets at night. Every year is different though. I have had years where many of my plants stayed productive till the end of October, while other years a single cold spell snapped the life out of my plants in early October. There are simply no guarantees. There is no point to starting new plants in the fall as the temps are just too low (even here) during winter. It may not snow, but SoCal, at some point, usually gets down to the 30's in Dec and Jan (at least where I am). One frost and the plants are toast. But we can generally set our plants out in the garden earlier than most of the country. I usually have a couple of plants in the ground by late March. Since the ground never freezes and we only get about 12" of rainfall a year, I can always find a weekend, or two, to go out and work the plot in Dec or Jan so that it will be ready in March. Prepping the soil in Dec or Jan lets the new compost to continue to mellow so that by March/early April things are just great. Althought there was a problem of too much overcast this year. It did not seem to get sunny all day until the middle of June. That means the plants grew nicely, but flower production was delayed. That is why some people question putting out plants that early. Well, I put a couple out that early because, if it works, I'll have nice ripe fruit in June. Even so, by putting the plants out earlier the plant has gone through the shock of being transplanted so that when conditions are rite they will be ready. The temps seemed a lot cooler this year than normal (what happened to all the talk about global warming - ya right!!). I usually have nice ripe fruit by the middle of June, just not this year. If you have a variety you really like, in mid to late May take a couple of the suckers from your healthiest plants, trim all the leaves off and plant it neck deep -to the point that only about two inches of plant is above the potting soil (the longer the sucker the better). The new plant will develop roots all along the length of the sucker that is below the surface. Before you know it you will have nice new plants for the garden. Sure is a lot faster than starting again from seed. Remember, because this is a plant and not a seed you need to keep it in sunlight from the start, and don't let the soil dry out. Also, while a seed has its own store of energy the sucker does not. So, unless your potting soil mix has fertilizer in it (many do), you will need to be sure to either add complst to the mix or fertilize occasionally. Just remember that the garden plot needs to be replennished at some point. New organic matter needs to be worked into the soil, it needs to rest a while, not to mention I need a break from the garden myself. For me this happens from Dec to Mar. We in SoCal can push the soil too far if we ar not aware of just how much it is being used.

Gina, I will email you when I get home (possibly at lunch). I do not have access to my email accounts here at work. Did you try my gmail account? That one should have worked for you. Bernard will be at my house October 8-18 doing landscaping for me, but it is certainly okay to have the get-together while he is here, although the landscaping will not be complete until the 18th. Most of it will be in the front yard, which we don't use anyway. Kathleen's schedule is similar to Bernard's, and so if we block out those dates, I will have an empty guest room for Eileen, if she wants to stay with me. She can still stay with me while Bernard is here, but that would put one person on the sofa, which is perfectly comfortable as a single bed. I think Eileen might have met Bernard when she and I met in San Francisco and were shopping on Haight Street. We ran into Bernard on the street or in one of the bars. Lars

I have to check my schedule also, but I would love to meet you as well. I have to take an Epicor computer training class in Irvine two days in November (a Friday and Saturday), but I'm pretty sure it is on the 7th and 8th.

While you are in SD, I highly recommend that you go to Khyber Pass Restaurant for dinner. It's by far my favorite restaurant in SD, and it's a rare treat to get Afghan food. The other restaurants I like in SD are in La Jolla - I'm not crazy about Old Town, which I think is best visited during the day. Balboa Park is something not to be missed, however.

Sharon, book that flight, I'd love to see you again pal! YOu too Linda!

My flight options out of LAX are departing at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday or at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday. My family leaves SD around noon on Saturday and I'm thinking I want to spend all day Friday with them and my DN. He only has 10 days before he gets his orders and ships out.

So, I'm thinking I'll drive up some time on Saturday depending on what we can/might work out and leave on Sunday. I'm open for anything lunch, dinner, drinks. I'd love to hit a few of the food stores out there. TJ's, Surfas, Penzeys, etc... I know life in general is busy for everyone and then there is the challenge of travel time in your HUGE metro area. Let me know what y'all think and if it doesn't work out I WILL make it out there one of these days.

Lars, thanks for the tip on dining! We haven't made it that far in our plans yet. I'd love to try that place but my family isn't that adventurous when it comes to eating. LOL We will be eating at Pendleton on Thursday, that should be very interesting.

I hope weekend traffic isn't too bad..LOL!

I checked the maps and found that Camp Pendleton is between Oceanside and San Clement, way north of San Diego. Will you be staying in San Diego or will you stay in Oceanside, which is where Camp Pendleton is located? I've only driven through Oceanside, either on my way to San Diego, Vista (to buy orchid cactus), or Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (great for camping/hiking in winter - too hot in summer).

If you will be staying in Oceanside, I would recommend Trupianos Italian Restaurant, and otherwise, I would recommend that you do some research before choosing a place, since most of the restaurants there are chains. If you want sushi, try the fish joint. There's nothing adventurous in Oceanside, and so your family should be okay with whatever you find, if that's where you will be. If you go north to Laguna, you can get very adventurous, however, and it's closer to Camp Pendleton than San Diego is. If your family is like my parents, that would not be a good idea, however.

You can get adventurous when you get to L.A. Surfas closes at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, but you can view their inventory on line beforehand. Penzey's and TJ's are rather ubiquitous and therefore less of a draw, I think. You'll have a lot of choices for lunch and dinner here. I look forward to meeting you!

Yay, I get to meet you at last! And Sharon, if you're serious, that would be a fabulous twofer!

David if you can stay for Sunday and you are flying from LAX, that's good - that's close for me, Lars and Scott, farther for Jessica and farthest for Diana and Ellen, but I'm sure they won't complain! (Where is that youngster Scott anyway?)

I've been busier than usual so I haven't been around here much. Everyone has my email so keep me posted.

Okay, I'm going for it and will head that way on Saturday and will fly out Sunday at five. We can discuss details, times, and plans via email if that's cool with everyone. I'm open to anything....well most anything..LOL!

Lars, that Italian place looks great and would be perfect for all of us, even the picky ones. DS wants to stay on base if we can get rooms at the hotel there but they only take reservations 30 days out. We will know later this month if that works out. Can't beat twenty dollars a night for a room. A decent room at that.

Hey Gina! Finally is right, sorry I missed you and Brenda in Texas a couple of months ago.

Katie and Linda, don't give up hope. I met my very first member (Alexa) here in OK of all places several years ago. I seem to remember Scott stopping by your place several years ago Linda....please tell me I haven't lost ALL of my memory.
