Has Ad-aware seen its best days?

I have used Ad-aware but lost it in a restoration. Reseraching, I find it is not highly rated any longer. "Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4" gets high praise, notably in the current issue of Consumer Reports. Should I reload with Spybot and forget old Ad-aware?

Whether or not it has seen better days, I still run it weekly along with Spybot, a-squared, SpyBlaster, and CW Shredder. On start-up I use AVG for virus and ZoneAlarm for a firewall. These work for me.

If you have used AdAware and found it satisfactory all this time why do you doubt it because an article suggests it might be so good? You have been a tester for a long time now. If you still have a copy of the SE version they are still offering updates

However I will suggest to you that AdAware2007 is a huge program compared to the SE version and uses considerably more of your resources. Because of that I removed it and replaced it with the AVG anti spyware program (formerly known as Edwido)

Yes it seems to be free according to the Majorgeeks download site. Perhaps Lavasoft have been badly stung by so many removing AdAware for the newer programs which appear more efficient. In their business you need to be among the leaders, second best does not cut it. The Lavasoft site is offering three versions though including the free one. I have Ad-Aware SE Pro on one of my two computers, and I was able to update with a definitions file dated Jan 25th after having updated on the 8th. I didn't have to pay for this version (the computer guy who upgraded my computer from Win ME to XP put it on for free), so I don't know if it's at all possible for anyone to simply upgrade from SE Personal to Pro (if he/she prefers it to the 2007 version). Of course, I have no idea how long I'll be able to update my SE Pro edition. Perhaps its days are numbered, too ! :-O

My experience with Malwarebytes is its missing some bad guys all too often lately ... then superAntiSpyware seems to get most misses. fwiw; Microsoft now has a new download program.. an 'on demand' security scan... gig file, long scan.. read here.. Microsoft Safety Scanner Bad part is no definition updates... every ten days you have to reinstall the whole thing. Its a large download, and think maybe 1.5hr scan here. Picked up some minor junk the others missed. another fwiw.... For those familiar with Auslogics, 'Boost Speed' a special edition is being given away free... here at ... Turning off tracking cookie checking is a configuration option in SuperAntiSpyware. But imagine that will save only a few seconds on total time to scan completion. Running a cookie cleaner like CCleaner before virus scans will keep the found warnings window less scary looking from all the tracking cookie finds.:) By default SuperAntiSpyware default configuration is 'only scans known file types' & few times I've noticed when that option is unchecked the computers anti-virus program will additionally pop some extra warnings on the second scan when SAS touches some of the bad guy type files - but it adds alot of time to the scan completion. I just cleaned one reoccurring virus .. it was acrobat.com would ask to update.. and that was the offending party. So every update... scan again hah.

I update and run AdAware every now and then. It never finds anything but curresnt cookies if I forget to flush cache and them first.

I do run fulltime, and believe windows defender is keeping everything fairly clean. Its a freeware too!

I use free AVG (which I don't believe includes anti-spy). I removed Ad-Aware on my new machine because it didn't get along with AVG and Zone Alarm. I had the paid version of Ad-Ware and it annoyed me that I lost my money on it. Before that I used the SE version for many years without problems.

I only have Spybot as anti-spy. I need to add something else. I always liked Ad-Aware.

I do not like AdAware 2007, so it has seen its best days as far as I am concerned. I still have it on my system anyway.

I have Ad-Aware SE Personal (the free version) and Spybot. I notice that Ad-Aware catches more objects than Spybot when scanning. The comparisons were made after both packages were updated to the latest and greatest definition files. Ran Ad-Aware first and Spybot next. Did not ask that any object be deleted after the scans ended.
