How can I fix the MS Office Outlook eMail Rules

I have IE8 and 2003 MS Office Outlook email.

And the Windows XP operating system.

The "Rules" are ignored, but they seem to take some effect If I repeat them over and over...

And now I receive some mail, CNN for one, 10 times over.

I cannot understand this, wish I still had the old Outlook Express, but I had some trouble with this one as well.

I'm doing something wrong with these rules, but what ??

The help is appreciated, wish I could help others with this computer...

when you get spam mail in your inbox are you moving it into your junk mail folder? if not that is what you must do for your email to learn what is junk, if you simply delete it you are doing no good, instead send it to the spam/ junk mail folder so it can be recognized as spam.

We had a problem with the computer, and my son had to run several checks to clear it of problems picked up. Everything seems to be working now except spell check. I went to Word (not OE)and typed a sentence with errors. A window came up that said that MSSpell check could not be found. After that I typed another document with spelling errors, and it came up that the spell check was complete, but it did not pick up the errors. I guess my spell check got deleted somehow, so maybe I need to reinstall Word?

Have you tried popping (as I call it) to your new IP address which would be different from your Verizon IP address, now that you are using Cablevision? Now, I haven't done this in years, as I don't POP email anymore, but Outlook and your ISP should have very specific instructions on how to do this. If you are receiving your e-mail via an e-mail account with Cablevision, their FAQs should have the answer or just do a search for POP3 e-mail on their homepage. If you use IE, you should be able to go under tools and open port 10061 if your security software or modem have disabled it. If you are using a router, you can turn off Windows firewall, which will solve a ton of problems. Check your IE settings. IE thinks most people are too stupid to use the internet and has ludicrous default settings that stop everything from getting in but viruses. Also, it is imperative your modem and router are speaking the same language. On the surface, it would seem so as you can get online. However, you may have to let your router "phone home" and tell it to receive POP3 from the manufacturers diagnostic page. Your modem should be fairly open to the internet, it's the router that acts as a gatekeeper. A few more of the myriad of reasons I use gmail and Firefox. Her email is not being rejected as Spam. What I tried to explain was the possibility that her Internet provider is allowing someone to send out Spam. If that is the case and SORBS are involved they would send the offending ISP a warning, if they heed the warning and close the spammer down all is well. However if they are tardy and fail to act then SORBS acts as an intermediary and blocks everything leaving that particular server. An internet provider can have numerous servers and if only one is involved in Spam then only that one gets blocked. That is why I asked if every email gets blocked or some. So.......... why not try this When the email is returned to the other person what is the reason given? Is it every piece or most of them getting returned? Have your friend right click on the returned message then click Properties, then Details then Message source. Bring this up to full screen and read down through the message. It seems likely that your server is allowing Spam to go out so her internet provider is blocking that server entirely. Look for the word SORBS - it may also be other companies but SORBS are big into this. Until that happens you are not going to know very much for sure.

OOps. Yes it was Microsoft Office and I removed it. I also have automated updates checked and I've been getting and installing them--except for IE-7 which I have blocked, also thanks to instructions on this forum. Now the mssg. I'm getting is from Microsoft Internet Explorer: "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed" when I tried their "contact us" link because I've registered twice (NBC.com) and when I click the link from their email confirmation I still can't log on. Sorry that sentence got so long, but trying to I'm trying to explain what I get and what I'm trying to do. Thanks for your help. Sandy

Check to see if, when using Outlook, you can create a filter for spam email that would identify it as spam and put it in the spam inbox before you have to deal with it. AOL has such a process that allows me to filter by email sender.

I agree I think rather than rules you need to be creating new
filters for your spam filters, if you do a search on that area zep linked to there are articles on using spam filters. you can also google it for more info

The problem is not the spam, this I deal with via the Trash Can and the Junk Mail box (better).
The problem is the ignored rules and the duplicate to deci-duplicate mail deliveries.
Maybe my 2003 Office Outlook is junk and I should use something newer and user friendly...I have scanned over the help from the link....Some of this is incomprehensible..

I'm sorry I think this is user set up error here.

After the creation of a message rule did you select the "Apply Now" button? Did you select all the "OK" buttons when exiting? I ask as I have been remiss in clicking all the necessary buttons when building a rule, and it has failed.

In your frustration to get the message rule option to work, did you create multiple entries for the same rule? If so, remove all but one.

In a last ditch effort you could remove all the message rules and start from the beginning.
