cd rom not reading cds

I have an HP computer, XP operating system. My cd stopped reading cds. I installed Microsoft security updates KB2286198 and KB951978 since it last worked. What steps should I take to fix this problem.

I'm posting a correction. I have a DVD burner, Lite-On DVDRW SHN-165H6S that is not reading CDs or DVDs

If you have an HP running XP then your computer must be atleast 4 years old. Similar to yours my HP running XP stopped writing DVD's so I had it checked out and had to have the unit replaced because it was worn out. It wasn't to costly to have it done, but you can replace it yourself and save some money.

ubuntu trying to update the drivers for cd rom

Yes it reads. I installed this version of ubuntu on it,and I can view a photo disc. Disk utility shows it but has a dash beside write cache. K3B shows it,but says error beside write. cat/proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info: drive name: sr0 drive speed: 52 drive # of slots: 1 Can close tray: 1 Can open tray: 1 Can lock tray: 1 Can change speed: 1 Can select disk: 0 Can read multisession: 1 Can read MCN: 1 Reports media changed: 1 Can play audio: 1 Can write CD-R: 0 Can write CD-RW: 0 Can read DVD: 0 Can write DVD-R: 0 Can write DVD-RAM: 0 Can read MRW: 1 Can write MRW: 1 Can write RAM: 1 no ndiswrapper I honestly don't know what I'm using that allows me to use the driver. Maybe I can't? How would I get a linux driver? I am up to date on all kernel updates as far as I know. I thought maybe I just needed to add something else like a destination for the file? If I can't get it figured out I will try ubuntu forums. Thanks for your help chuggerguy!

RW type disks, whether it be CD or DVD, should only be used for short term storage. Either type disks will let you transfer files to a different computer. If you use the RW type disks you can edit the files on the disks. If you use the R type disks you can copy the files to a computer, then edit the files, and then put them on another disk, R or RW. RW type disks are not a reliable storage media. If you are just moving a file from one computer to another you shouldn't delete the original until until the copy is safely on the other computer. If you are just wanting to back up files on your computer, use the R type disks and make a new copy periodically. If you have a small number of files to back up consider using a web service to store them or get a USB jump drive. (very handy to have). Whatever backup solution you choose remember, it won't work if you don't use it. Pooh Bear

Have you tried more than one CD? And more than one type? If for example you are trying a music CD now try inserting you XP operating system CD and see what pops up.

Does the activity light on the front of the DVD player come on when you close the drawer with a CD inside and does the speed of the flashing increase after a few seconds of activity?

After experimenting with different discs, I found that dvd's are being read and working fine, but any cd, game, music or blank, is not being read.

The activity light blinks for a short time and I can hear noise from the player, but then everything stops.

Are they not being read or are they not autorunning? There was a problem with autorun and I think it was disabled by default during an update a while back.

Try launching Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and see if the drove shows up under My Computer.

The Cds are not being read at all. The DVDs are autorunning and working OK. I went into Device Manager and the drive for the DVD/CD rom is there.
